Novi Sad

The book deals with the analysis of the data of the national tax census from 1828, which refer to three free royal cities and thirteen markets of Bačko-Bodroška County in the Kingdom of Hungary. The mentioned census represents a very valuable historical source for the economic and demographic history of Hungary, ie the mentioned settlements. The results of the census were once used for a detailed analysis of the property and production relations of the taxed population - which provided certain guidelines for the necessary reforms.


Knjiga se bavi analizom podataka zemaljskog poreskog popisa iz 1828. godine, koje se odnose na tri slobodna kraljevska grada i trinaest trgovišta Bačko-Bodroške županije u Kraljevini Mađarskoj. Pomenuti popis predstavlja veoma vredan istorijski izvor za privrednu i demografsku istoriju Ugarske odnosno pomenutih naselja. Rezultati popisa poslužili su svojevremeno za detaljnu analizu posedovnih i proizvodnih odnosa oporezovanog stanovništva - što je dalo određene smernice i za neophodne reforme.

At the end of the 1980s, the international movement of football fans experiences a renaissance, contributing to establishment of new and reshaping of existing organized groups throughout the Western world. This specific urban subculture, mostly of youth and males, has been occupying the attention of society for three whole decades with undiminished intensity, due to its aggressive and rebellious activism. The sociological study of authors from Zagreb on the group “Bad Blue Boys” ("Navijacko pleme" from 1989) and later "Torcida - pogled iznutra" by Drazen Lalic (1993) represent the first large-scale studies of football fans in the former Yugoslavia - the phenomenon which was still in the initial phase but still connected to the tempestuous political events of that time. Since that time many Serbian sociologists, criminologists and anthropologists studied certain types of behavior in the widely-defined sport audience, mostly fragmentary and from political and security perspectives. However, the football fans of FC Vojvodina were described for the first time only by the British historian Richard Mills (2010). The direct theoretical-empirical approach to the problem is still missing, including the adequate expert methodology in collecting the ethnographic material on fans of local clubs. Therefore this paper intends to be the first such study on football fan subculture in Serbia.
It was determined that football fans have several identities that are impossible to separate, and in various contexts they have different levels of importance. This paper studies how these identities are constructed by the members of the local structured group known as “Firma 1989”, supporting the Football Club Vojvodina, but there are also remarks on other football fan groups from Novi Sad (Korida, Delije and Grobari) as well as other groups from Serbia and neighboring countries. In solving the chosen theoretical problem it was not possible to stay within a single scientific discipline. Although this study tends to belong to anthropology of football, the theoretical-methodological concept of the paper also continues upon the previously stated general theoretical positions on gender studies, anthropology of religion, urban anthropology, ethnicity, and national and political identity.
The material for this study was collected through: observation with participation in various activities of members of group Firma 1989 and fan groups of clubs that FC Vojvodina met in the period 2012-2014; unstructured interviews with football fans; survey of internet websites and forums, newspaper articles, magazines and other texts, oriented by their content to past and present of the football fan group Firma, published from its establishment in 1989 to this day.
The first chapter of this paper deals with the historical framework, following the genesis and development of the football fan movement, FC Vojvodina and the group Firma. Then in the general discussion the fans are observed as a specific urban youth subculture, building its global identity in three contexts that they consider important: collective, territorial and gender/sex (masculine). In this context there are also separate discussions on visual style, rebellion and resistance to globalization. In the second thematic unit the complex contextual approach to study of numerous identity of Firma members is further analyzed, and the problem was studied from several standpoints with a special stress on their territorial identity as a scale of patriotism - from the broader (national, regional) toward the narrower context (city, borough, block, street). The ethnic or national belonging turned out to be a pronounced catalyst of many activities and it was observed as part of political identity, also discussed through presence of pronounced antagonisms (unitarists and autonomists, left and right political option). Also studied was construction of religious identity of football fans, determining how they express their belonging to Orthodox Christianity, the folk religion, and how they respond to challenges of secularization. Other recognized forms were some phenomena of ritualized behavior, elements of non-verbal communication and football fan symbols. The paper ends with analysis of persons considered particularly important by members of Firma, as they are considered their subcultural heroes.
I believe that genesis and function of football fan behavior may be followed in two directions: existential (since the prehistory people chanted loud cheers, both in collective hunt on dangerous game animals and in mass battles) and free time (since the ancient civilizations people have been gathering at specialized places to observe the most important secondary thing in the world that exists at that time). These events, personified in the ancient metaphor bread and circuses, at first had a strong religious character that gradually acquired the final secular features. To the contrast, the football fans seem to relapse to the level of culture of hunter-gatherer communities, and during their very complex socialization period they are not marginal characters but mostly adolescents attracted to belonging to a subculture, which, in time of transition of everything including the value orientations, offers to the young people a strong identity and cognitively directed activity, norms that pertain to everyone and protection of group members.
This text includes the more important chapters from a Master thesis completed in 2014 at the Department of Ethnology and Anthropology of Philosophy Faculty in Belgrade, under the mentorship of Professor Dr Vladimir Ribic. I am very grateful to Professor Ribic for expert help, support and patience.

This article gives an overview of different theories of moral development, while drawing conclusions for models of religious and political tolerance. After giving a short outline of Kohlberg's stages of morality, as well as Gilligan's alternative conception, the author claims that in the domain of moral development it would be possible to have a strictly formal approach that would not start with moral content (rights or care), and that development could be traced along the preconventional-egoistic, conventional-particularistic, and autonomous-universal stages of moral development.  Such formal stages are then applied to the development of religion on the levels of individual and community, as well as on the development political culture of tolerance.
After a detailed analysis, the author concludes that further empirical corroboration is needed for the hypothesis. Arguments for the validity of the hypothesis can be found in both socialist and liberal political traditions. Namely, Habermas' model of the development of society is founded on the development of morality according to the logic contained in language (from I to They), while Rawls' differentiation between types of societies and conception of international justice rest of three stages of moral development. The article concludes that such theoretical considerations provide sufficient reasons for empirical research in the domain of moral development, religion and political culture.

The breakup of socialist Yugoslavia led to the creation of seven new states out of its eight federal units. The only exception, until now unexplored, is the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina, which remains a part of Serbia, although with a substantially restricted autonomy. Notably questions about the quality and quantity of autonomy have been a subject of heavy political conflicts in Vojvodina since the end of the 1980s. Political differences between the „autonomists“ in the province, who also during the 1990s advocated a broad autonomy, and the central government in Belgrade, whose power was based on the idea of a strong unified Serbia, the former increasingly presented as historically predetermined cultural differences, which are explored here as “phantom borders”. The political claims for more autonomy were thus repeatedly reinforced in terms of various symbolically connected statements about the historical distinctiveness of the population, economy and culture of Vojvodina. The autonomy in turn was also represented as an instrument of protection against and alternative model to the growing Serbian nationalism during the “Milošević era”. In the course of meanwhile more than two decades these interpretations merged into a new autonomy discourse. How this emerged, i.e. which agents made how and for what purposes the phantom borders of Vojvodina reappear, as well as what relevance the idea of autonomy gained during the period of radical change in the 1990s in everyday life of the people in Vojvodina are the central research questions of the case study. It hereby offers not only new empirical findings about the history of the breakup of the Yugoslav state and the post-socialist period in Southeastern Europe, but due to the used model of “phantom borders” also permits new insights into and general conclusions about the reappearance of history and historical borders in Eastern Europe after 1989.

Историјски приступ социолошком феномену миграција има за задатак указати на просторни и хронолошки контекст уз посебно тумачење узрока и последица ове појаве. Овај рад у право има то за циљ, да прикаже кроз историјски осврт сеобу становника Београда након пораза војске Хабсбуршке монархије од Османског царства, 21. јула 1739. године. Наиме, по поразу војске хабсбуршког цара Карла VI (1711-1740), становништво, насељавано у Београд у периоду 1718-1739. године, у потпуности се повукло узводно Дунавом до Петроварадинске тврђаве и населило леву обалу реке. На простору Петроварадинског шанца дошло је до формирања насеља, које је за мање од деценије изборило статус Слободног краљевског града од стране царице Марије Терезије (1740-1780). Приликом анализе литературе биће коришћени и историјски извори, односно први документи, који говоре о процесу елибертације и изградњи НовогСада (лат. Neoplanta, нем. Neusatz, мађ. Újvidék). Имајући у виду да, до сада, није написана свеобухватна студија која укључује сеобе становништва из Београда, насељавања дунавске обале, изградњу новог насеља и процес елибертације, овај рад ће представљати синтезу прегледа досадашњих појединачних истраживања са анализом објављених и необјављених историјских извора, који се чувају у Историјском архиву града Новог Сада и Архиву Војводине.

The historical approach to the sociological phenomenon of migration aims at pointing out the spatial and chronological context with a particular interpretation of the causes and consequences of this phenomenon. This work is intended to show through the historical review the migration of the inhabitants of Belgrade after the defeat of the Habsburg army by the Ottoman Empire on July 21, 1739. Namely, after the defeat of the army of Emperor Charles VI of Habsburg (1711-1740), the population, settled in Belgrade in the period 1718-1739, completely withdrew upstream of the Danube to the Petrovaradin Fortress and settled on the left bank of the river. In the area of ​​Petrovaradin Šanac, a settlement was formed, which in less than a decade won the status of Free Royal City by Empress Maria Theresa (1740-1780). In addition to the use of literature, the analysis will use historical sources and the first documents that testify to the process of eliberation and construction of Novi Sad (Latin Neoplanta, Ger. Neusatz, Hun. Újvidék). Bearing in mind that no comprehensive study has been written so far that includes population movements from Belgrade, settlements of the Danube coast, construction of a new settlement and the process of eliberation, this paper will be a synthesis of a review of individual studies to date with an analysis of published and unpublished historical sources stored in The Historical Archives of the City of Novi Sad and the Archives of Vojvodina.

Кафана „Бела лађа” представља, данас, један заборављени угоститељски објекат, чији зидови садрже богату двовековну историју. Налази се у Његошевој улици, на броју 7. Овај рад представља настојање аутора да помоћу историјских извора, уз додатну консултацију литературе, представи хронолошку реконструкцију места које је било „Атина” српске политичке и књижевне интелигенције Новог Сада, у другој половини XIX века. Синтеза сопственог мишљења, на основу обраде историјских извора, са досадашњим резултатима истраживања даће једну нову слику о историји овог места, пре свега узимајући у обзир поједине досадашње тврдње у вези са овим местом. Аутор ће се задржати на анализи архивске грађе која датира из XIX века.

Designer of the new synagogue building complex in Novi Sad at the beginning of the 20th century, Lipót Baumhorn (1860–1932) exercised a significant influence on the architecture of the city (then part of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy and today second largest city of Serbia). Apart from the synagogue, the Budapest-based architect created five more buildings in Novi Sad: the bank building in the main square, the highly representative palaces of a local furniture maker and a wine trader, and a small two-storey town house. In addition, the research I conducted in the local archives has revealed the address and fundamental details of one more Baumhorn building, considered up to now to have been demolished; this archival information was inaccessible to local researchers for language reasons. The purpose of this study is to provide a short introduction to the works of Baumhorn – known for his synagogues only – as well as of a direct colleague of his, Károly Kovács, foreman of the new synagogue complex. I find it crucial to recognize these buildings less for their stylistic features – characterizing the turn of the century – than for the role they play in the urban context, both from a typological and a social perspective.

Kapela Majke Božje Snježne na Tekijama kod Petrovaradina jedan je od povijesno najslojevitijih spomenika arhitekture Srijema. Istodobno radi se o ključnom spomeniku vezanom za prijelomni trenutak političke povijesti ne samo Habsburške Monarhije već i cijele Srednje i Jugoistočne Europe 18. stoljeća, bitke u kojoj je Eugen Savojski 1716. porazio osmanlijsku vojsku otvorivši time put prema austrijskom osvajanju cijeloga Srijema te Banata, a potom i sjeverne Srbije i Bosne.
U svoj se literaturi spominje da je u vrijeme osmanske vlasti (16.-17. stoljeće) na mjestu današnje kapele podignuta malena džamija, nedaleko prvotno dva (danas samo jednoga) izvora kvalitetne pitke vode. Nakon što je habsburška vojska osvojila 1687. Petrovaradin i obnovila katoličku hijerarhiju u mjestu župu preuzima isusovački red, koji nekadašnju džamiju, vjerojatno krajem 17. ili počekom 18. stoljeće, konvertira u katoličku kapelu. Nakon bitke 1716. kapela se pretvara, zahvaljujući ikoni Majke Božje Snježne, koju je svetištu poklonio Eugen Savojski, u najvažnije hodočasničko marijansko svetište ovoga dijela Habsburške Monarhije. U to je vrijeme građevina dograđena za dva hvata sredstvima obitelji u bici poginulog habsburškog časnika Siegmunda Breunera.
Kapeli na Tekijama izgled će ponovno biti promijenjen 1754. godine kada isusovci poduzimaju veliki građevinski zahvat s ciljem da osiguraju što više unutrašnjega prostora. Ispred džamije, koja je sada počela služiti kao sakristija, dograđeno je pravokutno svetište i dugi brod koji su u osi malo pomaknuti prema zapadu, u odnosu na prostor džamije, nesumnjivo zbog potrebe prilagođavanja zemljištu, odnosno padu terena prema močvarama uz Dunav. Novi dugi brod pokriven je masivnim baroknim svodovima sa susvodnicama, a zidovi su mu raščlanjeni parovima jonskih pilastara. Glavno pročelje bilo je skromno raščlanjeno pilastrima i nišama sa skulpturama. Ukinućem isusovačkog reda 1773. bitno se mijenja položaj kapele. Petrovaradin prelazi u ruke biskupijskog svećenstva, a potom 1776. godine ulazi u sastav Bosansko-srijemske i Đakovačke biskupije.
Kapela na Tekijama svoj današnji izgled dobila je 1880.-1881. godine obnovom provedenome za vrijeme agilnoga župnika Ilije Okrugića Srijemca (1827. – 1897.).  Dograđeno joj je dvotoranjsko pročelje, po uzoru na pročelje đakovačke katedrale, te sakristija, a na dijelu kapele koji je bio džamija dograđen je visoki tambur s kupolom koja je okrunjena simbolom pobjede kršćanstva nad islamom – križem postavljenim iznad polumjeseca. Prostor džamije povezan je s ranijim isusovačkim svetištem i pretvoren u novu apsidu crkve. Time je potpuno promijenjen izgled ovoga važnog povijesnog spomenika zbog čega je Odjel za bogoštovlje Zapovjedništva Vojne Krajine u Zagrebu (unutar koje se Petrovaradin u to vrijeme nalazio) ovaj zahvat nastojao zaustaviti. Iako se đakovački biskup Josip Juraj Strossmayer složio s mišljenjem Odjela, župnik Okrugić je ipak proveo restauraciju u cijelosti prema svojim nahođenjima, samo je, sukladno odredbama iz Zagreba, promijenio stil restauracije – umjesto neogotičkog odabran je naposljetku neoromanički stil.
Dio izvora projekte za restauraciju pripisuje najvažnijemu arhitektu historicizma u Hrvatskoj Hermanu Bolléu, a dio novosadskom graditelju Georgu Molnáru, no po svoj je prilici Bollé njihov autor.
Novo glavno pročelje znatno je šire od starijega dijela građevine, a i novi je glavni zabat nešto viši od krovišta broda što jasno upućuje na okolnost da je glavni razlog zahvata predstavljala težnja monumentalizaciji građevine te dobivanju reprezentativnijega pročelja koje istodobno estetski odgovara nazorima kraja 19. stoljeća.

PETROWARADINER FESTUNG IM ZEITRAUM 1954−2004 GESCHÜTZT,
EINGERICHTET UND REVITALISIERT WIRD
ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Als die Petrowaradiner Festung unter Zivilverwaltung
gestellt wurde, ist sie gekennzeichnet von einem vollständigen Mangel an
Vernetzung und von der Unabgestimmtheit aller zuständigen Subjekte, unklar
definierten Kompetenzen und fehlenden gemeinsamen Plänen und Programmen,
welche zu ihrer besseren Nutzung und Erhaltung beitragen sollten. Im
Laufe der Zeit wurden zahlreiche Ideen, Pläne und Projekte vorgeschlagen,
zahlreiche Analysen und Studien erstellt, mit dem Ziel, den Raum der Festung
einzurichten und zu verwalten, zu revitalisieren und zu nutzen. In der Arbeit
wird ein chronologischer Überblick über diese spezifische Art der Dokumentation
gegeben, welche periodenmäßig und unter bestimmten gesellschaftlichen,
wirtschaftlichen und politischen Umständen entstanden ist, mit einem spezifischen
Vokabular, Ideen und Lösungsvorschlägen.

Hrvatsko narodno kazalište u Zagrebu i godinu dana mlađe Srpsko narodno pozorište dva su vršnjaka koje bi, unatoč strukturno-povijesnim razlikama, trebalo puno više spajati nego razdvajati. No, iako je njihova najplodonosnija suradnja započela čak dva desetljeća prije njihova institucionaliziranja, stupanj suradnje im je nakon toga gotovo uvijek ovisio o kulturno - političkim prilikama koje su ih pozicionirale u središte državnog djelovanja, zahtijevajući od njih da nerijetko instrumentaliziraju i spektakulariziraju političku volju pojedinih moćnika i vlastodržaca. Upravo su u takvim, totalitarnim povijesno-političkim odsječcima povijesti, prijateljska suradnja i međusobni (đorđevićevskim rječnikom rečeno) duhovni saobraćaj bile na najnižem stupnju. Između toga, samo onda, kada su umjetnici sami, vođeni pasioniranim znalcima iz struke željeli komunicirati i međusobno izmjenjivati umjetnička dostignuća, zajednički im je rad bio zamjetan i plodonosan, na tragu one davne 1840. (koju tematizira ovaj članak) kada je, slobodno možemo reći, bio epohalan.

The emphasized spatial positioning of football fans in Novi Sad is a topic that has not been explored in the relevant literature so far. This spatial positioning is based on numerous parameters: ethnicity, stratification, culture, relative distance from the center of the town, the time period when the given quarter was inhabited, and others. The study examines how football fans from Novi Sad construct their local (Novi Sad and narrower than that) and regional (Vojvodinian) territorial identity. It examines the discrepancy between the young men needs for belonging to the global youth subcultural lifestyle on the one hand, and on the other, for commitment to certain neighborhoods that express specific local urban identity. The results of the research indicate that in contrast to the concepts of group solidarity and masculinity, the territoriality of football fans has not been sufficiently studied in literature, although this phenomenon is quite significant, thus, a new widely applicable model for analysis is described in this paper, which can shed more light on this issue.

Rođeni Novosađanin, Cvi Loker je tokom svog uzbudljivog života obavljao mnoge diplomatske dužnosti, ali je najznačajnija ostvarenja postigao kao istoričar - koji je istoriju i stvarao.
Odlazio sam u njegov dom u Jerusalimu tokom dva prolećna meseca 2005. godine, snimao njegova sećanja, zatim to „skidao“ sa trake, prerađivao, pa sa Lokerom dopunjavao i ispravljao... Imao sam veliko zadovoljstvo da se bliže upoznam sa interesantnim intelektualcem, briljantnim istoričarem, predanim diplomatom i nadasve prijatnim čovekom kroz čiji se život prelomila čitava istorija jugoslovenskog Jevrejstva XX veka.
Kao 90-godišnjak, Cvi Loker je bio izuzetno vitalan. Sećanja na životne događaje, ličnosti, mesta i situacije izlagao je toliko precizno, sistematski i tečno, da su naknadne ispravke ili dopune često bile gotovo nepotrebne. Potrudio sam se da u ovim zapisima sačuvam tu logičnost Lokerovog izlaganja, pa i njegov rečnik sa ponekom arhaičnom reči ili rečeničkim obrtom. Uz ubeđenje da će ovaj tekst poslužiti budućim generacijama istoričara, nadam se da sam uspeo da prenesem i gotovo romanesknu, često dramatičnu priču ovog zbilja nesvakidašnjeg života.
Loker je umro 25. maja 2014.

Portreti vladarskih parova Austrougarske monarhije i Kraljevine SHS koji su bili smešteni u svečanu salu novosadske Gradske kuće doživeli su istu sudbinu – sa nestankom države na čijem čelu su se nalazili, nestale su i njihove slike iz reprezentativnog javnog prostora. Propast Dvojne monarhije i postanak Kraljevine SHS uslovili su smeštanje dvojnog vladarskog portreta u isti prostor, čak i iste ramove, što je trebalo da otelotvori nova ideološka stremljenja, i da mladu jugoslovensku državu učini prisutnom u simboličkoj politici na novoosvojenoj teritoriji. Uklanjanje, a zatim postavljanje novih vladarskih likova u prostor javne reprezentacije svedoči o estetsko-simboličkoj dimenziji politike, čiji će slikovno-strateški mehanizmi biti ispitani na primeru jedne prostorije, jednog grada, gotovo
istovetne zajednice konzumenata, ali u dve države, sa dva različita vladarska para u njihovom središtu.

Active citizenship in the post-war Western Balkans has traditionally been studied in the context of either Western-style (and usually foreign-funded) Non- Governmental Organisations (NGOs) or, more recently, protest movements. This chapter highlights a wider range of better- and lesser-known forms of civil society in the contemporary post-Yugoslav space. It shows how interest associations, student unions, religious groups and online communities can all contribute to vibrant civil society, even if their work seems distant from the post-war area’s current problems. This civil society, the chapter argues, creates an environment in which the people of the western Balkans can enact their citizenship and, little by little, ‘build bridges’, across ethnic lines and beyond.

Sreskog odbora između zvanično promovisanog sećanja na NOR koji je
Glavni odbor SB pokušavao da kreira i lokalnih doživljaja istog rata bio je
jedan od osnovnih ciljeva istraživanja. Pored toga, ono je bilo usredsređeno na način na koji se SB odnosio prema omladini, jubilejima,
spomen-obeležjima vezanim za NOR, kao i istoriografiji vezanoj za njega.
Pored toga, rad se bavi uticajem koji je na rad SB na sreskom nivou imao
Četvrti kongres SUBNOR-a 1961. na kojem je najavljena promena politike
prema mladima i tekovinama NOR-a. Zaključeno je da je Sreski odbor
Saveza boraca imao značajnu ulogu prenosioca uputstava Glavnog odbora SB na mesni nivo i pomagača mesnih odbora u njihovim naporima da NOR ostane upamćen. Takođe je primećeno da je razvoj na sreskom i mesnom nivou bio drugačiji od onog koji je predviđao Četvrti kongres SUBNOR-a 1961, kao i da je omladina vremenom izašla iz fokusa Sreskog odbora.

This Study links competitiveness of economy of the Vojvodina Province in Serbia and evolution of the energy system within its territory. It talks about energy security, energy efficiency and sustainable development. The Study was part of the wider exercise to support spatial plan of Vojvodina Province .  It comprises partial understanding of the impacts of the largest hydro power complex in Europe: the Iron Gates at the Danube River.

У овом раду се анализирају поједине карактеристике идентитета Новог Сада као специфичне мултиконфесионалне и мултинационалне средине, у контексту комеморације и декомеморације, односно рефлексија званичне културе сећања у јавном простору. Стварање идентитета града, то јест различите праксе и тенденције изградње официјалне меморије Новог Сада, посматране су из хронолошке визуре, од средине деветнаестог века до периода распада СФРЈ, као специфичан (мета)текст. Промене одономастике и других елемената културе сећања у јавним просторима, посебно у историјском језгру града, истовремено указују на специфичности Новог Сада као особене динамичне урбане целине, али и на могућности примене урбане антропологије за истраживање читавог низа тема.

A Contribution to Researching the Official Remembrance Culture of
Novi Sad in the Sense of Researching the Anthropology of the City

This paper analyzes certain characteristics of the identity of Novi Sad as a specific multiconfessional and multinational environment in the context of commemoration and decommemoration, as a reflection of official culture of remembrance as articulated in public space. The creation of the identity of the city, different practices and tendencies in creating the official memory of Novi Sad, are viewed diachronically, from the mid-19th century to the dissolution of SFRY, as a form of (meta)text. Changes in odonyms and other elements of remembrance culture in public spaces, especially in the historic part of the city, simultaneously point to the specificity of Novi Sad as a dynamic urban environment and to the possibilities of applying urban anthropology to research on a slew of different topics.

This paper presents the history and the most important moments related to the establishment of the Novi Sad City Library which also houses a collection of books in Rusyn language published by the Newspaper Publishing Institution Ruske Slovo. The subject of this paper is the publishing activity of the Newspaper Publishing Institution Ruske Slovo in the period 2013‒2017. The bibliography of books contains 41 titles, with the circulation of 150 to 500 copies per title. The Novi Sad City Library holds only a part of the production of this publishing company, 12 titles, mainly belonging to the Local Collection. All members of the Novi Sad City Library have access to the books in the Local Collection, but they can be used only in a reading room with limited working hours.

The article is about contemporary local bars and cafes called kafana or bife, in the context of the history of cafes and cafe life in Vojvodina, including the oldest places from the 18th century as well as the 19th century Viennese coffee houses. Although contemporary kafanas have nothing in common with old, elegant cafes, nor do they resemble modern pubs, the author argues that these shabby bars, frequented by members of local community from all social groups, possess a unique genius loci and indeed continue to perform the social functions of old cafes. Kafanas of the old districts of Novi Sad (Podbara, Salajka, Rotkvarija) have remained genuine, natural, lively meeting places, where people enjoy spending time with each other, everyday rituals of drinking coffee or rakia, read newspapers and talk to their friends. Yet, the most important ritual is simply being there, sitting and sharing time with each other. It is these small pleasures that are the source of greatest joy to South European people in these unhappy times.

Emerik Feješ (Osijek, 1904 - Novi Sad, 1969) is considered as one of the most important representatives of naive art in Yugoslavia, along with Vojvodina's Ilija (Bosilj) Bašičević, Pal Homonai, Ferenc Kalmar that started to develop after the Second World War. Feješ is considered the protagonist of urban scenes in art. Born in Osijek in a humble family of Serbian and Hungarian origin, his family moved to Novi Sad in Serbia in 1909. He later worked as a manufacturer and seller of buttons and as a vendor in antiquity shops in various cities in Yugoslavia. He returned to Novi Sad in 1945, where, due to illness, he left his craft and in 1949 began painting. At the very beginning of his art career Feješ painted primarily nudes, portraits and scenes from suburban life. His motifs changed after 1954, when he got the advice and support of Vojvodina's artists Boško Petrović, Bogomil Karlavaris, Ivan Radović, Ivan Tabaković, Ana Bešlić and others to exclusively paint the urban scenes. He painted cities, that, in most cases, he never visited. Feješ painted by watching postcards and photos of cities in newspapers, or in those brought by friends and customers. The cities in Serbia that Feješ was inspired by are Belgrade, Novi Sad, Subotica and Zrenjanin. This paper is discussing Feješ's paintings inspired by Novi Sad; his vision of the Synagogue, the City Hall and the city center of Novi Sad as the most representative and recognizable motifs of the city, all protected by the state as built heritage of great importance. A discussion of Feješ's art would support the deepening of knowledge about the significance of his art in the context of the naive and marginal art in the region and Europe itself. In Serbia, the most represented collection of Feješ's paintings is in the Museum of Vojvodina in Novi Sad and the Ilijanum Museum in Šid. This article is calling for further research on Feješ's art and visibility campaigns in the 2022, when Novi Sad will be the European Capital of Culture.

Rođeni Novosađanin, Cvi Loker je tokom svog uzbudljivog života obavljao mnoge diplomatske dužnosti, ali je najznačajnija ostvarenja postigao kao istoričar - koji je istoriju i stvarao.
Odlazio sam u njegov dom u Jerusalimu tokom dva prolećna meseca 2005. godine, snimao njegova sećanja, zatim to „skidao“ sa trake, prerađivao, pa sa Lokerom dopunjavao i ispravljao... Imao sam veliko zadovoljstvo da se bliže upoznam sa interesantnim intelektualcem, briljantnim istoričarem, predanim diplomatom i nadasve prijatnim čovekom kroz čiji se život prelomila čitava istorija jugoslovenskog Jevrejstva XX veka.
Kao 90-godišnjak, Cvi Loker je bio izuzetno vitalan. Sećanja na životne događaje, ličnosti, mesta i situacije izlagao je toliko precizno, sistematski i tečno, da su naknadne ispravke ili dopune često bile gotovo nepotrebne. Potrudio sam se da u ovim zapisima sačuvam tu logičnost Lokerovog izlaganja, pa i njegov rečnik sa ponekom arhaičnom reči ili rečeničkim obrtom. Uz ubeđenje da će ovaj tekst poslužiti budućim generacijama istoričara, nadam se da sam uspeo da prenesem i gotovo romanesknu, često dramatičnu priču ovog zbilja nesvakidašnjeg života.
Loker je umro 25. maja 2014.

Activism is typically associated with work within charities/NGOs or participation in social movements. This essay highlights activism different from these forms in that it happens without funding or mass mobilisation. Instead, it is powered by the longer-term perspective and day-to-day efforts of ‘activist citizens’. Based on interviews and participant observation in bookshop-cafés and other donor-independent initiatives in Novi Sad, Serbia, the essay argues that such ‘everyday activism’ is significant not only because it supports the development of other, more visible, forms of activism, but also in its own right, as a counter-space contributing to social change.
