How much of a rival is social media for linear TV audiences and ad dollars? Digital video is often considered the beneficiary of linear TV’s decline. But with 60% of time spent on social networks now dedicated to video, those platforms have also emerged as strong contenders for shrinking linear TV audiences. ✨ There will be 7.8 million more social network users than linear TV viewers in 2025, per EMARKETER. ✨ US adults will spend 52 minutes on social networks per day this year, which is slightly longer than an average primetime TV show without commercials. The social networks are following in YouTube's footsteps. It already has a bigger US audience than any social, TV, or streaming platform, and its user base continues to grow. ✨ YouTube surpassed linear TV in monthly US users in 2023. ✨ Close to half of daily time spent watching #YouTube will take place on CTV, meaning it's a direct competitor for time spent on the bigger screen. Among Gen Z, social media is a form of TV. You can still find Gen Zers in front of the big living room screen, but they’re far more likely to be streaming YouTube (or another digital video service) than watching linear TV. And they’re probably scrolling #TikTok —or even Instagram—on another screen as they do. ✨ TikTok has already surpassed linear TV in daily time spent among 18-to-24 year olds, and #Instagram will overtake linear TV in 2026. ✨ Even #Snapchat now has more Gen Z monthly users than linear TV. Over $50 billion in linear TV ad spending is at stake. Linear TV ad budgets are already leaking into social video. Broadcasters and streamers are shifting strategies to become more social and #creator-friendly in an effort to bring those dollars back. ✨ US advertisers will spend over $5 billion more on social video (excluding YouTube) than linear TV in 2025. Has anyone ever sized the market opportunity the measurement/verification/attribution/optimization companies are fighting for a share of? Are long-term projections tethered to assumptions using math like we expect X share of a market sized Y, yielding revenue Z, margins A = valuation B? I suspect the pie is finite and not going to grow enormously, so in the end there is only room for a handful of players. And someone is going to have to lose significant share for even that to work. Especially as long as the sell side is paying most of the freight (directly and indirectly).

UGC creators should be on red alert. UGC is turning AI-GC. We've been sharing our thoughts on AI disruption on Influencer Marketing, and predicted UGC was the most vulnerable category of the creator economy, the most susceptible to transformation. Now Techcrunch reports that TikTok will allow brands to create UGCs (more like AI GCs) with genAI. What does this mean for creators? What does this mean for brands and agencies? There are many commonalities between this fraud scheme and those perpetrated for years in ad tech. The ad tech (Advertising Tech)industry hasn’t solved it yet. Do we think the streaming music industry will do better? I think the economics are different in that the DSPS (Digital Streaming Platforms) are the main direct victims, so they have incentive and means to prevent the fraud. In ad tech there are MANY WHO STAND TO GAIN from the fraud and the biggest victims are usually the many advertisers who are too far removed from the tech to have the means to prevent it…other than pulling their ad spend out of digital advertising. #adtech #streaming #fraud #music

Feels like things are quickly escalating. ID bridging has been a problem for a long time with most folks having employed it not understanding what it actually did and who it impacted. If there was a revenue lift they were happy. As I've been saying for a while w.r.t a general need to shift towards more SaaS solutions, the fact these say business are literally incentivised to increase revenue creates a fine line between finding the most accurate match vs the most valuable one.. We need transparency and we need measurement across IDs. The new IAB spec is a great start. #idbridging #adtech

In my years managing media, I witnessed a concerning trend: formal media struggling against platforms that prioritized views over content curation. The lack of transparency made it difficult to ensure ads appeared alongside trustworthy content. A recent study reveals that much of online misinformation is funded by advertising, affecting companies unaware of their ads appearing on such sites. This highlights a crucial issue: while platforms algorithmically place ads, advertisers often lack visibility into where their ads end up, leading to consumer backlash when they appear on misinformation sites. This underscores the need for advertising dollars to support quality content. Transparency in ad placement and a strong stance against financing misinformation can help restore trust in digital advertising. Notably, 40% of US agency and marketing professionals have shifted their ad dollars from linear TV to CTV, highlighting the channel's rapid growth and importance. Additionally, 46% of US adults are willing to share their media and entertainment preferences with brands in exchange for #AI-assisted, personalized ads, presenting a unique opportunity for more tailored and engaging ad experiences.
