O objetivo do estudo foi examinar a influência de dois diferentes protocolos de treinamento de força sobre parâmetros antropométricos (peso, IMC, massa gorda), funcionais (teste de 1-RM e teste de repetições máximas) e relacionados ao sistema endócrino (concentração de testosterona e de cortisol) e ao sistema imunológico (concentração de glutamina e de IgG). Participaram do estudo 12 homens treinados (27,4 ± 4,8 anos). Esses indivíduos foram aleatoriamente divididos em dois grupos, que posteriormente foram submetidos a dois protocolos de treinamento distintos: Múltiplas séries (MS) e Tri-set (TS). Amostras de sangue foram coletadas antes e depois de uma sessão de exercício de força, no início e no final do período de oito semanas de treinamento. To investigate the efficacy of classical massage on stress perception and mood disturbances, 34 women diagnosed with primary breast cancer were randomized into an intervention or control group. For a period of 5 weeks, the intervention group (n = 17) received biweekly 30-min classical massages. The control group (n = 17) received no additional treatment to their routine health care. The Perceived Stress Questionnaire (PSQ) and the Berlin Mood Questionnaire (BSF) were used and the patients’ blood was collected at baseline (T1), at the end of the intervention period (T2), and 6 weeks after T2 (T3). Compared with control group, women in the intervention group reported significantly lower mood disturbances, especially for anger (p = 0.048), anxious depression (p = 0.03) at T2, and tiredness at T3 (p = 0.01). No group differences were found in PSQ scales, cortisol and serotonin concentrations at T2 and T3. However, perceived stress and cortisol serum levels (p = 0.03) were significantly reduced after massage therapy (T2) compared with baseline in the intervention group. Further research is needed to validate our findings.

This study of stress experienced during the transition from one’s own home into an independent/assisted senior housing community among older women was conducted using a mixed-methods approach that included (a) qualitative data collection via time-use diaries and open-ended interview questions, (b) quantitative data collected through structured interview questions and empirically validated scales that measured stress perceptions and coping behaviors, and (c) biological measures of stress reactivity through salivary cortisol. Designed to capture the adaptation period, the study was conducted longitudinally with repeated measures consisting of three interviews, six time diaries, and six sets of saliva collection beginning within 1 month of the move through the first 6 months in residence. The data allowed for triangulation of stressful events, perceptions of stress, and physiological reactivity, and yielded interesting preliminary results. Challenges included veracity of self-report responses, correct timing of saliva collection per protocol specifications, and maintenance of researcher–participant boundaries.

Background The enzyme 11-β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 1 (11β-HSD1) catalyzes intracellular glucocorticoid reactivation by conversion of cortisone to cortisol in different tissues and have been implicated in several metabolic disorders associated with obesity. The aim of this study was to evaluate the 11β-HSD1 expression in liver, visceral adipose tissue (VAT), and subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT) in morbidly obese patients undergoing bariatric surgery and its correlations with clinical, anthropometric, and biochemical variables. Methods A prospective study was conducted over a 27-month period. Hepatic, VAT, and SAT samples were obtained at the time of surgery. 11β-HSD1 and 18S gene expression was measured using real-time quantitative reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction. Results Forty nine patients met the inclusion criteria [mean age: 42.2 ± 10 years, body mass index (BMI): 42 ± 6 kg/m2, 71% women and 63% with metabolic syndrome (MS)]. 11β-HSD1 mRNA levels were higher in liver than fat tissue (p < 0.001), being higher in SAT than in VAT (p < 0.001) without gender-specific differences. Hepatic expression of 11β-HSD1 correlated positively with SAT and VAT, alanine aminotransferase (ALT), and serum glucose and was inversely associated with BMI. 11β-HSD1 mRNA in VAT correlated positively with insulinemia, ALT, and LDL cholesterol. There were no associations between 11β-HSD1 mRNA in SAT and the variables analyzed. Conclusions 11β-HSD1 expression is higher in liver in comparison to adipose tissue in obese patients. The observed correlations between hepatic and VAT 11β-HSD1 expression with dyslipidemia and insulin resistance suggest that this enzyme might have a pathogenic role in obesity and related metabolic disorders.

Уделот на психосоцијалниот стрес во настанокот и прогресијата на хроничната пародонтопатија е потврден во многу студии досега. Паралелно на тоа, интензивно се докажуваат позитивните ефекти од практикувањето на јога врз различни психички, социјални и физички аспекти на човекот но и при важни стрес индуцирани заболувања. Она што до сега не е воопшто истражено е ��оврзаноста на стрес редукциони методи т.е. јога со состојбата на пародонтот.
За таа цел на Клиниката за болести на устата и пародонт, при УСКЦ “Св.Пантејлемон“ Скопје,  беше изведена студија на пресек врз вкупно 40 испитаници, на возраст од 25-60 години. Со помош на прелиминарен прашалник, од 4 здравствени установи беа селектирани 20 испитаника кои не практикуваат релаксациони методи на неделно ниво и 20 испитаника од Центар за јога и личен развој, Скопје, кои практикуваат јога, редовно во изминатата 1,5 година. Сите испитаници покажуваа знаци за пародонтална афекција и немаа здравствени состојби кои интерферираат со хроничната пародонтопатија. Првата група, како контролна ја сочинуваа испитаниците кои не практикуваат јога, а втората група, испитувана ја сочинуваа испитаниците со јога искуство. Во тек на работен ден, во периодот помеѓу 8-10 часот наутро, им беше земен примерок од плунка за детекција на нивото на саливарен кортизол и извршено психолошко тестирање на субјективното доживување на стресот со PSQ прашалникот и BAI тестот на анксиозност. Беше направен пародонтолошки преглед од страна на еден истражувач и определени пародонталните параметри: Лу Силнес индексот на гингивална инфламација, Рамфјорд пародонтолошкиот индекс, напреднатост на пародонтопатијата врз основа на големината на губитокот на припој и формата на пародонтопатија врз основа на процентуалната застапеност на зафатените заби со болеста. Резултатите добиени од прашалниците беа анализирани од страна на психијатар на  Институт за физиологија со антропологија, кабинет за психофизиологија, Медицински Факултет,Скопје. На Институтот за резидуи и контаминенти при Ветеринарниот факултет во Скопје беа утврдени вредностите на саливарен кортизол со помош на Кит за детекција Salimetrics  - High Sensitivity SALIVARY CORTISOL ENZYME IMMUNOASSAY KIT For Research Use Only,Item No. 1-3002, (Single) 96-Well Kit;1-3002-5, (5-Pack) 480 Wells, Penn State Collage,USA. Добиентите резултати беа статистички обработени со методите на дескриптивна и аналитичка статистика, и користење на  Pearson-овиот коефициент на корелација.
Постигнувањата на скалата PSQ ни укажа дека постои умерено високо ниво на психосоцијален стрес во последните две години, кај сите испитаници. Student-овиот t- тест покажа дека нема статистички значајна разлика во средните вредности на PSQ тестот, помеѓу испитаниците кои практикуваат и кои не практикуваат јога, за p= 0.5192. Анализата на BAI тестот за анксиозност, ни укажа дека двете групи на испитаници се во рамките на слаба( ниска ) анксиозност, но и дека групата без јога искуство има сигнификантно повисока анксиозност  за разлика од групата кој практикува јога, за p= 0.04652.  Просечните вредности на саливарниот кортизол кај сите испитаници беа во рамките на референтните вредности зададени за утринскиот период во кој се одвиваше земањето на примерокот, и помеѓу двете групи нема статистички значајна разлика, за p= 0.9895. Во прилог на ова ни говори јаката корелација помеѓу саливарниот кортизол и PSQ скоровите кај двете групи, што значи дека умерено високиот психосоцијален стрес придонел за умерено покачување на утринското ниво на саливарен кортизол. Средно јаката корелација помеѓу постигнувањата на BAI тестот и кортизолот кај јогиската групата ни говори за  придонесот на емоциите  врз хормоналните промени во организмот, за разлика од непостоењето на таква поврзаност кај групата без јога искуство при што вредностите на кортизолот не се во корелација со нивото на анксиозност кое што го изјавиле во нашето истражување. Нотиравме статистички значајно поголема инфламација на гингивата кај контролната група во споредба со испитуваната група, за p=0.0001339. Присуството на позитивни корелации помеѓу PSQ  скоровите и Лу Силнес индексот кај двете групи (r=0.9936 кај контролната, r=0.5625 кај испитуваната) , и BAI скоровите со Лу Силнес индексот кај двете групи (r=0.5444 кај контролната, 0.5792 кај испитуваната) ни ја потврдуваат хипотезата дека субјективно доживеаниот стрес резултира со гингивалните промени што понатаму можат да се прошират и на преостанатиот пародонт. Просечните вредности за пародонталниот индекс по Рамфјорд значително не се разликуваат помеѓу двете групи, p= 0.8849. Корелациите помеѓу Рамфјорд вредностите и вредностите на PSQ (r= 0.3378 кај контролната и r= 0.2653 кај испитуваната) како и Рамфјорд со  BAI тестовите покажуваат позитивни (r= 0.4842 кај контролната, r= 0.414 кај испитуваната), средно јаки корелации, што значи дека психосоцијалниот стрес има влијание врз состојбата на пародонтот. Не утврдивме статистичка значајност во разликата помеѓу напреднатоста и формата на пародонтопатијата кај двете групи меѓусебно. Средно јаката корелација помеѓу PSQ вредностите и напреднатоста на пародонтопатијата ни го потврдуваат  влијанието што го има психосоцијалниот стрес врз напредокот на пародонталната болест (r= 0.7922 кај контролната, r= 0.529 кај испитуваната група). BAI вредностите на анксиозност  позитивно корелираат со големината на губитокот на атечментот кај испитуваната група појако (r= 0.4474), но кај контролната група слабо до незначително (r= 0.1773). Корелацијата помеѓу саливарниот кортизол со пародонталните параметри кај јогиската група е умерена до многу јака. Кај групата која не практикува  релаксациони методи добивме јака корелација меѓу саливарниот кортизол и напреднатоста на пародонтопатијата(r= 0.8329)  и слаба корелација помеѓу него и гингивалната инфламација(r=0.2552 ). При испитување на корелација помеѓу саливарниот кортизол и Рамфјорд индексот кај контролната група не добивме поврзаност (r= 0.0311).
Од сето претходно изнесено, можеме да заклучиме дека хроничниот емотивен стрес влијае врз состојбата на пародонтот преку неуроендокрини механизми. Јога, како широко распространета и применувана стрес-редукциона метода влијае на намалувањето на анксиозноста како поинтензивна емоција кај човекот и намалување на  инфламација на гингивата како важен дел од пародонтот.

The current study investigated biopsychosocial resilience in an older adult caregiver. A case study was selected for in-depth exploration of resilience in caregiving identified through biopsychosocial (i.e., salivary cortisol) methods. An exemplar of a woman caring for an adult child dying from a genetic disease is presented in the context of multiple stressors. Significant stress was found to be buffered by cognitive reframing and acceptance of interpersonal limits. Early experiences in caregiving for others with terminal illnesses provided a frame of reference, and difficult family dynamics added a layer of complexity. During periods identified as stressful, cortisol levels rose outside of normal bounds. The study implications are that mixed-methods (i.e., biopsychosocial) studies yield important results on individual differences within similar contexts. [Res Gerontol Nurs. 2015; 8(1):29-38.].

People occasionally choose to cut themselves off from their online social network by taking extended breaks from Facebook. This study investigated whether abstaining from Facebook reduces stress but also reduces subjective well-being because of the resulting social disconnection. Participants (138 active Facebook users) were assigned to either a condition in which they were instructed to give up Facebook for 5 days or continue to use Facebook as normal. Perceived stress and well-being, as well as salivary cortisol, were measured before and after the test period. Relative to those in the Facebook Normal condition, those in the No Facebook condition experienced lower levels of cortisol and life satisfaction. Our results suggest that the typical Facebook user may occasionally find the large amount of social information available to be taxing, and Facebook vacations could ameliorate this stress-at least in the short term.

Cortisol inhibition of phytohemagglutinin (PHA)-induced lymphocyte activation was studied in vitro in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) of patients with pathologies of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenocortical (HPA) system (n = 18) as well as in students under and out of academic stress. In patients with HPA pathologies, cortisol-induced inhibition of lymphocyte interleukin-2 (IL-2) secretion in vitro positively correlated (p &lt; .005) with IL-2 synthesis, such that lymphocytes secreting less IL-2 were less cortisol sensitive. Similarly, in stressed students there was a positive correlation (p &lt; .02) between lymphocyte DNA synthesis and cortisol inhibition in vitro. Academic stress also resulted in a decrease (p &lt; .01) of lymphocyte cortisol sensitivity. The same tendency was observed in patients with Cushing&#39;s syndrome when compared with hypocortisolemic patients. Purpose This study compares the in vivo relative lung bioavailability of Hydrofluoroalkane (HFA) Seretide delivered via unprimed and unwashed Aerochamber Plus (AP) or Volumatic (VM) spacers, a integrated breath-actuated vortex Synchro-Breathe (SB) device and an Evohaler pMDI (EH) device using adrenal suppression and early fall in serum potassium (K) as surrogates for respirable dose. Methods Seventeen healthy volunteers completed this randomised double-blind, double-dummy crossover study. Single doses of placebo/Seretide 250 (total dose ex valve fluticasone 2000 mcg/salmeterol 200 mcg) were administered via the devices. Overnight urinary cortisol/creatinine (OUCC) and serum K were measured at baseline and after each dose. Results Significant suppression of OUCC and K occurred from baseline with the SB, AP and VM but not with the EH devices. The geometric mean fold suppression (95% confidence interval, p) was: EH, 1.59 (0.80–3.14, p = 0.40); AP, 4.26 (3.01–6.02, p < 0.001); VM, 3.11 (1.99–4.78, p < 0. 001); SB, 3.29 (2.04–5.24, p < 0.001). For K, the arithmetic mean fall (mmol/l) (95% confidence interval; p) was: EH, −0.10 (−0.25–0.05, p = 0.18); AP, −0.23 (−0.41 to −0.04, p = 0.02); VM, −0.22 (−0.44 to −0.01, p = 0.04); SB, −0.28 (−0.42 to −0.13, p = 0.001). Conclusions The breath-actuated SB device was comparable to ‘out of the box’ small and large volume spacers and produced similar improvements in relative systemic lung bioavailability for fluticasone and salmeterol.

Introduction: Intense exercise is known to cause temporary impairments in immune function. Few studies, however, have investigated the effects of intense competitive sports on immunoendocrine variables in athletes. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to explore the effect of sport competition on responses of salivary immunoglobolin A (sIgA), cortisol and their relationships in adolescent karateka.

Materials & methods: Ten boys karateka with average ages of 13.1±.9 yr, weight: 58±9.7 kg, and body mass index: 20.3±2.4 kg/m2, that acceded to final competition of Ilam province were selected as subjects of this study. Unstimulated saliva samples were collected to measure sIgA and cortisol levels with ELISA method before, immediately and 2 hours after competition. In order to analyze the data, Shapiro-Wilk, analysis of variance (ANOVA) with repeated measurements, Bonferroni and Pearson’s correlation tests at the significant level of p<0.05 were utilized.

Findings: The sIgA level of adolescent karateka significantly decreased immediately in comparison with before competition (p=0.002), and increased significantly 2 hours after in comparison with immediately after competition (p=0.04). Also, the cortisol level of adolscent karateka increased significantly immediately (p=0.004), and 2 hours after in comparison with before the competition (p=0.038). In addition, there were no significant relationships between changes in sIgA and cortisol immediately (r=-0.47, p=0.16) and 2 hours (r=-0.36, p=0.22) after competition.

Discusion & Conclusions: This results indicated that, official karate competition maybe with stimulating the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal (HPA) axis, causes increase in cortisol level and decrease of sIgA. It is concluded that, participant in karate competition suppressed mucousal immune system and enhanced possible risk of upper respiratory tract infection. Therefore, it could be necessary to take protective actions to minimize contact with pathogens or even reduce the training load for athletes.

Poor understanding of the clinicopathological features of prostate cancer (CaP) in Black men (BM) is one of the major challenges implicated in the management and prevention of the disease. The development of CaP involves an accumulation of multiple oncogenic events with associated increase in prostate specific antigen (PSA) and stress related hormones such as Cortisol. This research aims to examine the role of Cortisol and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in CaP development. Data was collected as part of a large CaPTC Familial CaP Cohort Study. The HRQoL indicators were measured and salivary Cortisol levels evaluated by enzyme immunoassay. CaP tissue expression patterns of cortisol and Annexin V were also studied by immunohistochemistry. The HRQoL indicators showed a significant difference between participants with and without physical activity (P = 0.025), stress (P = 0.008) and self-care (P = 0.005). There was significant increase in salivary cortisol levels in the CaP patients compared to CaP-free participants (P = 0.003). The salivary cortisol level for the CaP patients ranged from 1.029 μg/dL to 0.037 μg/dL while the range for the CaP-free participants was from 0.139 μg/dL to 0.026 μg/dL. In addition, we found increased expression of the cortisol protein in CaP patients with Gleason score 8 compared to those with lower scores and the CaP tissues showed overexpression of Annexin V protein. Salivary and tissue cortisol levels with an accompanying Annexin V expression may serve as important biomarkers for CaP diagnosis and prognosis in West African Black men.

Objectives

The aim of this preliminary study was to evaluate if Sleep Restriction Therapy for insomnia is associated with modifications to physiological arousal, indexed through overnight measures of plasma cortisol concentrations and core body temperature.

Methods

In a pre-to-post open label study design, eleven patients with chronic and severe Psychophysiological Insomnia underwent 5 weeks of Sleep Restriction Therapy.

Results

Eight (73%) patients out of 11 consented completed therapy and showed a decrease in insomnia severity pre-to-post treatment (mean (SD): 18.1 (2.8) versus 8.4 (4.8); p = .001). Six patients were analyzed with pre-to-post overnight measures of temperature and cortisol. Contrary to our hypothesis, significantly higher levels of plasma cortisol concentrations were found during the early morning at post-treatment compared to baseline (p < .01), while no change was observed in the pre-sleep phase or early part of the night. Core body temperature during sleep was however reduced significantly (overall mean [95% CI]: 36.54 (°C) [36.3, 36.8] versus 36.45 [36.2, 36.7]; p < .05).

Conclusions

Sleep Restriction Therapy therefore was associated with increased early morning cortisol concentrations and decreased core body temperature, supporting the premise of physiological changes in functioning after effective therapy. Future work should evaluate change in physiological variables associated with clinical treatment response.
