Charter school myth: “charter schools don’t serve students with disabilities”. This is one I hear all the time - yet a simple data review tells a very different story. In RI, 13% of charter school students have IEPs, as compared to 17% statewide. This small difference is exacerbated by family choice, where some families may have received incorrect information about the support available in charter schools and choose not to apply. Charter schools are public schools, and as such are held accountable to meeting the needs of ALL students. Small class sizes, low leadership turnover and missions aligned to inclusion lend themselves well to this work. #charterschools #charterfacts #schoolchoice #proudpublicschools

Disruption. Equity. Inclusion. 💪 Just before half term, Chatsworth Schools held our latest DEI day at Great Tew hosted by our Head of DEI, Joanna Leach in front of another packed house 🙌🏻 Chatsworth Schools was delighted to welcome DEI expert Penny Rabiger, PhD candidate with the Centre for Race, Education and Decoloniality (CRED) at Leeds Beckett University, a coach on the Anti-Racist School Award (All Chatsworth Schools are working towards it) and content developer for CRED professional learning programmes. There was a thorough examination of some core elements of DEI and specifically anti-racism with some in-depth activities and reflections 👌🏻: 🔎 An overview of The Public Sector Equality Duty for Schools 🔎 Why race in particular & intersections with the other 8 characteristics 🔎 What is race? What is racism? 🔎 What might anti-racism look like? 🔎 Where does racism dwell - the six areas of the Anti-Racism School Award 🔎 Examples of ways of tackling racism and embedding anti-racist practice, and gathering evidence for the award One of the biggest takeaways was that if leaders, schools and school groups are serious about 'disrupting' education, it is impossible to achieve genuine disruption without ensuring every member of your community feels safe, accepted and that they belong 💜 As a global schools family we are totally committed to disrupting the norm in every aspect of education for the benefit of every child and staff member. We have an international platform to disrupt the way school groups approach DEI and we fully intend to be positive DEI disrupters in education through deliberate actions and the evolution of our bespoke Chatsworth Schools DEI Charter 🙌🏾 They are all our children. If we need to disrupt to make sure they all belong, then bring it on! #disrupters #DEI #diversity #equity #inclusion #belonging #globalschoolsfamily

We are excited to welcome 🌟 Linsey McMurrin to the 2024-25 TEL Fellowship! Linsey is a citizen of the Leech Lake Nation of Ojibwe and descendant of the White Earth Nation, is committed to the ongoing process of integrating #trauma-sensitive, #equity driven, #restoratively based and #culturally #responsive approaches into the organizations, institutions, systems and policies throughout our #communities and beyond in order to cultivate environments in which everyone can find pathways to #healing and success. She believes a firm understanding of the root causes of the contemporary issues we face as a society today is paramount to making true and lasting change that is necessary for individuals, families and communities to thrive. Linsey centers her approach around the importance of building relationship through authentic connection and empathetic listening, as these are the building blocks of cultivating the #thriving and #inclusive #communities we all want for our children, both now and for #generations to come. What draws Linsey to becoming a TEL Fellow? Linsey shares: "As an #indigenous #leader in a #rural area, it is difficult to find others in leadership positions that can relate to the unique challenges of continuously trying to walk in multiple worlds. TEL's commitment to ensuring #diversity of Fellows is encouraging to me as I seek to find more #connection with community that can relate and understand, and believe in the tools #SEL, #equity, #healing work and creating beloved community offer. Leading a nonprofit that serves communities that can benefit from representation, lived experience, and advocacy inspires me to seek opportunities to grow in all areas I can to ensure that I am bringing the most effective approaches back to our organization and my staff, and the schools, students, and agencies we serve. Most importantly, I am a mother and I want to have the skills to pass on to others and to be able to continue to build the world that my children, and all children, deserve in which they will thrive. #edleadership #edleaders #leadersofcolor #inclusion #equity #healing #culturallyresponsive
