Families Choosing Integration
About us
Integrated Schools prepares families with racial or economic privilege to commit to integrating our children, driving new narratives about education, and advocating for justice in our public schools. Integrated Schools envisions a racially and socioeconomically integrated public school system where power and resources are shared equitably, humanity is valued unconditionally and all communities reap the benefits. Embracing the promise of integrated schools to prepare all students to thrive in an ever-globalizing world, provide equitable access and cultivate meaningful bonds across race, class, and ethnicity, we not only value but prioritize integration. Because school segregation is as much a story of failed public policy as it is one of white/privileged families thwarting it, our hearts-and-minds campaign offers a new model for integration in which this undertaking falls not on the backs of marginalized communities, but on white and/or privileged families who care about equity. By working with parents to examine their privilege and understand that their impact matters more than their intentions, Integrated Schools prepares parents to support meaningfully integrated classrooms that reflect the diversity of their district as well as school communities that respect ALL families and are galvanized around supporting ALL children. Through national organizing to promote local action, we support, educate, develop and mobilize families to “live their values,” disrupt segregation, and leverage their choices for the well-being and futures for their own children, for all children, and for our democracy.

"...That political leadership will also have to overcome objections from comfortably middle-class families. Many people who rue segregation and poverty in the abstract, and are happy to write checks, will balk at personally contributing to the work by living in economically mixed neighborhoods and sending their children to schools where the focus is on integrating the bottom rather than catering to the top." ...

Segregation, racism, and discrimination happened (and still happen) everywhere in our country including in The West and The Southwest. For example, in California and all around the Southwest Mexican Americans and Chicanos were segregated from “Whites Only” theaters, parks, swimming pools, restaurants, and schools. ... According to Learning for Justice, “In the 1940s, more than 80 percent of school districts in California with large Mexican populations practiced segregation. The segregation of Chicano children was also widespread in Texas, New Mexico and Arizona. The Mexican schools were typically housed in run-down buildings. They employed less-experienced teachers than the Anglo schools. Chicano children were given shabbier books and equipment than their white peers and were taught in more crowded classrooms. Perhaps the greatest difference between the schools, however, was in their curricula. While geometry and biology were taught at the Anglo schools, classes at the Mexican schools focused on teaching boys industrial skills and girls domestic tasks.” ... This article from Learning for Justice takes a deep dive into the history of segregation in Southwest and into the ongoing effects of segregation today. Hi teachers! Come read with me. Integrated Schools is doing a special teacher's edition for the fall book club. I'll be hosting the 10/24 session, but sign up for any date for an awesome read and discussion on Unearthing Joy in learning.
BOOK CLUB ANNOUNCEMENT!!!! ... We are thrilled to announce a special “teacher's edition” of the Integrated Schools Book Club, a conversation that centers educators but also makes room for those of us across the Integrated Schools community who want to know how we can support teachers in honoring and uplifting the diverse backgrounds of our students. ... The book is Dr. Gholdy Muhammad’s Unearthing Joy, a deep dive into the heart of culturally and historically responsive teaching practices. Dr. Muhammad, a prominent educator and thought leader, explores how we can create classrooms that celebrate identity, foster a sense of belonging, and inspire joy in learning. ... Two of the sessions (Sat 10/26 and Thurs 10/29) will be geared towards teacher participation and facilitated by educators, while the other two sessions (Tues 10/22 and Thurs 10/29) will be open to parents and caregivers and will discuss the book and how we may advocate for culturally and historically responsive teaching and learning in our schools. ... We think this is an AMAZING opportunity to engage with teachers, hear from them, and learn better how to support culturally and historically resonant teaching practices and curriculum. And we need our community's help! Whether you plan to attend or not, we hope you’ll take this opportunity to let the teachers in your life know about Integrated Schools, and encourage them to join us for a Book Club session. You might even sweeten the deal by offering to purchase them a copy of Unearthing Joy! 😉 ... https://buff.ly/4gm3jNf

It is really helpful to understand the legal history of advancing the promise of Integration, even if it takes more than litigation alone to make it happen (hint: heart-shift work of parents and caregivers to COMMIT to supporting Integration is vital!). Saba Bireda, co-founder and legal counsel of Brown's Promise provides an incredible analysis (with a new favorite metaphor! 🚦 🚨 💥 ) on The 74 this week. ... "If Brown was the green light for school integration in America, Milliken — which addressed the question of whether the federal courts could require regional integration plans across district lines — became something of a flashing red. In overruling the cross-district remedies that lower courts deemed essential for true integration in metropolitan Detroit, the Supreme Court significantly limited the ability of the federal courts to order predominantly white suburban districts to integrate with predominantly black urban ones." ...

Our Co-founder & chief legal counsel, Saba Bireda authors our latest op-ed for The 74 Media, revisiting the significant impact of the Milliken v. Bradley decision on school segregation. Check out the article in the link below, here is what you'll find ➡️ How the Supreme Court's ruling continues to influence the segregation seen between school districts today, where 97% of the intense segregation in the Detroit area stems from demographic differences between neighboring districts. ➡️ Proven and effective desegregation strategies and arguments for state interventions like revising funding formulas and promoting interdistrict transfers to mitigate segregation's deep-seated effects. In this episode from the Integrated Schools podcast, we talk with Dr. Carol Anderson. Dr. Anderson is the Charles Howard Candler Professor of African American Studies at Emory University and author of White Rage: The Unspoken Truth of Our Nation’s Divide; One Person, No Vote: How Voter Suppression is Destroying Our Democracy; and The Second: Race and Guns in a Fatally Unequal America. With a gift for making the illegible legible, Dr. Anderson provides us with a clear eyed look at the history that has led to the widely inequitable education system we have today. Through our conversation, we discuss the White rage backlash to Brown v. Board and all of the ways that the progress promised in Brown v. Board was undermined both then, in the immediate aftermath of the decision, and today.
