Red Terror

Summary

The book deals with Soviet mass terror campaigns in the territories of the present day Republic of Moldova. As the breakaway separatist region of Transnistria of today was a part of Ukraine and Soviet Russia-Soviet Union since 1917, the story begins right after the October Revolution. Among the topics included are: Red Terror in Transnistria, latter on territories in which in 1924 was created the Moldavian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic; the famine of 1921-1922; 1924-1926 (local one) and 1932-33, various aspects, including details about the privileges of nomenklatura; collectivization campaign on 1929-1933 and mass deportations as well other political repressions; resistance of the local populations, scale and forms of manifestations, including the bab'i bunty; Great terror in Moldavian ASSR, 1937-1938; extension of Communist Terror in Bessarabia, 1940-1941, following the application of secret protocol of Soviet Nazi Pact of August 23 1939, including a paragraph on the execution of 136 persons in the first year of Soviet occupation of Bessarabia, their ethnic and social background; postwar famine of 1946-1947, raising questions like: was it organized or determined by natural conditions as the Soviet historiography pretended, how various agenda of different Soviet institutions worsened the situation of the local population and made the death toll (4,5 % out of the total population) the highest in comparison with Ukraine (0,6 %) and Russia (1%) according to Michael Ellman (Cambridge Journal of Economics, September 2000, vol. 24, p. 613); other topics include mass deportations from the late Stalinism, 1949 and 1951, conflicts between MGB and MVD during the mass operations, the reaction of the population, the conditions of life in Siberia etc; and the impact of 20th Congress of CPSU and Hungarian Revolution on public opinion in the Moldavian SSR during February-December 1956 and the contestations of the monopoly of Communist Party in society and the resurgence of apocalyptic rumors and expectations, as well as the end of the myth ‘Americans are coming to liberate us’. The book alternates the general analysis of the phenomena of repressions, violence and resistance with personal stories based on KGB files and testimonies of the victims or their relatives when available. Among the general questions posed in the book is the one related to the nature of repressions and violence in the Soviet Union in its formative years (Lenin and Stalin): were the repressions and mass violence a direct consequence of the application of ideology or a result of certain context?
The book used largely Russian and Ukrainian collections of documents and literature published in the last 20 years as well as reference authors from the West (among others Lynne Viola, David Shearer, Peter Solomon, Nicolas Werth etc). About half of the information is from the archival sources previously inaccessible from the former KGB in Chisinau, MVD of Moldavian SSR and Sovmin of MSSR. 
The book has been published in Romanian and has 396 pages, including conclusions, selective bibliography, Index and 7 pages of pictures with victims and perpetrators. The Russian version is in work now and will be published most probably already in the fall 2014.

Diktatórikus keretek között az elvtelen kollaboráció és az egzisztenciális kényszerből vállalt, folytatólagos közszolgálat között húzódó határsáv, a fennálló kényszerhelyzettől függően lehet szélesebb vagy akár keskenyebb is. A Tanácsköztársaság közeli bukásának reményében, a kettő közötti „senki földjén” átmenetileg meg lehet húzódni, de erkölcsi ellehetetlenülés nélkül, huzamosabb ideig nem lehet ott maradni. E két terület ugyanis a kiélezett döntési helyzetekben élesen és világosan elkülönül egymástól és ezáltal az értéksemleges lojalitás lehetősége is lezárul.

Így történt ez az 1919. június végén lezajlott szentendrei ellenforradalom idején is, amikor egy rendőrtisztből lett vörösőr parancsnokot, Perjessy Sándort a közösségét érintő sorskérdések válaszút elé állítottak és állásfoglalásra kényszerítettek. Miként és hogyan döntött, s milyen eltérő narratívák jelennek meg a vele szemben lefolytatott büntető-, kegyelmi- és fegyelmi eljárásokban?

Magyar Endre Lénárd könyve nem csak a Szentendrén működő rendvédelmi és karhatalmi szervek 1918 novemberétől a Tanácsköztársaság bukásáig tartó, folyamatos és többszöri újjászervezését rekonstruálja, hanem részletesen bemutatja az 1919. június 24-25-i szentendrei ellenforradalom, az azt követő megtorlás és Kucsera Ferenc káplán meggyilkolásának történetét is.

Perjessy Sándor esete kitűnően érzékelteti, mennyire félrevezető minden olyan kísérlet, amely az egyes történelmi szereplők cselekedeteit történelmi kontextusukból kiragadja, döntéseiket, mozgásterüket és pályájukat ezáltal nem megérteni, hanem ideológiai szempontok alapján egyoldalúan és elfogultan megítélni akarja.

A fegyelmi ügy során megerősített tényállás alapján bizonyos, hogy Dr. Polgár a kommün idején több ember életét megmentette, megszervezte az ellenforradalmárok kórházát, ápolta sebesültjeiket, sőt egyeseknek üldözőik elől is segített elmenekülni. Fekete Lajos kántortanítót egy orvosi bizonyítvány kiállításávalmentettemeg a forradalmi törvényszék elé állítástól, az akasztásra ítélt, megkínzott, majd az ereit felvágva öngyilkosságba menekülő Hauer Béla hartai földbirtokost pedig kihozta a börtönből, személyes összeköttetései révén. Az egykori pataji orvosnak a proletárdiktatúra idején betöltött szerepét minden bizonnyal további kutatások fogják tisztázni. Az ő története csak egy azok közül, amelyek iratait, immár ideológiai elvárások nélkül, elő kell vennünk és felül kell vizsgálnunk.

The takeover of power in Yugoslavia was carried out by the Communist Party in full accordance with the textbooks of the Bolshevik Party schools for establishing of the proletarian dictatorship. In this spirit, a state established after the Second World War was formed, whose declared aim was to change the regime and establish a new social order. The first priority on the list of the leaders of the socialist revolution was the liquidation of the occupying forces and their domestic collaborators. In order to consolidate its power, the revolutionary power included in their number not just those who actively assited the occupying forces, but also those who were not in favour of the regime and did not actively fighty on the side of the partisans. The iron fist of vengeance thus struck thousands and thousands with all its might. However, the firmer was the Communist Party's grip on power, the greater was the weight of its internal opposition. It became a real danger after the split between Mos-cow and Belgrade in 1948. This is why the regime dealt with them mercilessly. A new series of mass arrests, convictions and deportations followed. Initially, Tito's regime responded to criticism from Moscow by radicalising the Stalinist line in eliminating the last vestiges of "capitalism" in Yugoslavia. Eventually, however, Yugoslav ideologues developed a new tpe of socialist system-Titoism. The showcase item, born out of creative opposition to Stalin and the Soviet system and fit for new ide-ologisation was workers' self-management. Paradoxically, how this new system works, the regime tested in practice on the Goli Otok island and other "work sites" scattered around the state were so-called Stalinists were deported in order to be re-educated.

In November 1918, massive popular unrest broke out in the Hungarian countryside, followed by a short but intense borderland war against the Czechoslovakian and Romanian army. Meanwhile, from the spring of 1919, red and white paramilitary groups terrorized the countryside, killing hundreds of people. This violent postwar transformation lasted until 1921 and made a significant mark on the interwar political culture of the country. The so called "Szeged Idea," the founding myth of the right-wing paramilitaries of 1919-1920, became the dominant ideology in interwar Hungary. Miklós Horthy's regime defined itself as "counterrevolutionary," the antithesis of the revolutionary democratic and communist governments. This, however, did not mean that all the right-wing paramilitary figures had a direct pathway to power in the interwar period and that all of Béla Kun's military leaders were completely sidelined. These people had various careers and some-but not all-of them were involved in right-wing movements and actively participated in the mass murders of World War II.

Protoiereus Anthony Ozerov. On the Circumstances of His Martyric Death in 1918

This is the third article in the set of five publications, which are focused on the church parish history of the village Levocha in the Novgorod region (Russia). The central topic, which connects all these publications, is the biography of the local priest Fr. Anthony Ozerov, who was killed by the Bolsheviks in 1918, when they depressed the revolt of the local peasants against Soviet power. This article contains publication of the archival documents from "the case against Anthony Ozerov and Vasiliy Zhulavlev, who were accused of overthrow of the Soviets and agitation for a counter-revolutionary revolt". In the end of this file a short publication about the official rehabilitation of Fr. Anthony Ozerov (as well as the peasant Vasiliy Zhulavlev) is attached.

The Ministration of Protoiereus Anthony Ozerov in the Village Levocha of the Novgorod Governorate:

This is the fifth and conclusive article in the set of publications, which are focused on the church parish history of the village Levocha in the Novgorod region (Russia). The central topic, which connects all these publications, is the biography of the local priest Fr. Anthony Ozerov, who was killed by the Bolsheviks in 1918, when they depressed the revolt of the local peasants against Soviet power.

This paper discusses the communist repression against manuscripts and their owners in Azerbaijan. It focuses in particular on the lost manuscript collection of the
philologist, writer, and collector, Salmān Mumtāz (1884–1941). His desire for knowledge, together with his proficiency in a dozen or so languages, and his social status as a merchant brought him into possession of a valuable manuscript collection, which became famous beyond Azerbaijan. Upon his arrest in 1937 as an ‘enemy of the state’, his manuscripts were confiscated and subsequently lost within the walls of the offices
of the nkvd, the People’s Commissariat for Internal Affairs, the Communist Secret Police. In the present paper, a first attempt is made to determine the contents of Salmān Mumtāz’s library. The attempt is based on his research on Azerbaijani literature in general and the archival materials of the kgb in particular. More specifically, it examines the criminal case file concerning Salmān Mumtāz, which includes attestations of contemporary scholars and family members about his library as well as a partial list of the contents of his collection.

Controversies often pushed forward allegations of a Bolshevik “innovation” or “invention” of modern concentration camps during the Red Terror. However, new evidence and contextualization of this practice assert a continuation of earlier imperial and colonial practices and a mirroring of international warfare tactics in vigor during the First World War. Regarding modern global-scale forms of violence in general, and concentration camps in particular, communism did not innovate specifically. Moreover, the Bolsheviks consciously adopted a common practice of “bourgeois” and “Imperialist” States, which they used to denounce before. Trotsky’s War Communism doctrine was partially an outcome of this dilemma. However, the concentration camps practice, which used to be an anti-guerrilla strategy and a population control tactic specific to wartime, was retained once the fight on the “external front” ended victoriously. Indeed, through and after the war, Soviet camp praxis bore particularities—for instance, its rapid legalization as a normal, instead of exceptional, state practice. Without leaving camps in a legal grey area, Bolshevik officials formally and publicly justified them. This paper illustrates this process, explaining how statemen, and theorists gradually appropriated this exogenous device. The paper attempts to demonstrate how this adaptation to a war context produced one of the essential aspects of the pre-Stalinian regime. Furthermore, this process was debated: a dispute between the OGPU and the Justice Commissariat shows that Dzerzhinsky advocated against the perennation and systematization of this practice. With new archive evidence and analysis of canon penal texts, the paper argues that camps and forced labor in USSR were not inherent to October’s communist doctrine. They were rather a contingent consequence of the civil war: a marker of the militarization of Soviet society that persisted ultimately. Concentration camps thus developed as a stigma and tool of the war that the Bolshevik state waged against society, on the internal front.

Amikor a ma 96 éve, 1919. március 21-én kikiáltott Tanácsköztársaság kutatója kézbe veszi diktatúra utáni büntetőügyek iratait, legnagyobb számban a nyers erőszak leghétköznapibb jelenségeinek, a polgári magántulajdon rekvirálásának vagy köztulajdonba vételének különféle eseteit találja bennük. Amíg az első világháború idején a rekvirálás rendkívüli felhatalmazáshoz kötött kényszerintézkedés volt, a proletárdiktatúra alatt a nyers erőszak leghétköznapibb jelenségévé vált.

Mire emlékezünk, mire emlékezzünk a 100 évvel ezelőtti régmúlt eseményeiből? Egyáltalán szükséges emlékezni? Az én és a mostani kiállítás határozott és egybehangzó válasza az, hogy igen. Ugyanakkor felmerül a kérdés: hogyan emlékezzünk? Mire fókuszáljunk, mire közelítsünk úgy, hogy ne túl szűken lássuk a múltat? Kinek, kiknek a szemszögéből, hány szögből láttassuk? A múlt rekonstruálásának ezen nehézségei nem újak. Megismerésének legmélyebben gyökeredző és legnehezebben megváltoztatható rétege a személyes, illetve családi emlékezet.

1919. június 18-23-a között (fegyveres) ellenállás bontakozott ki a Duna-mellék több településén a Tanácsköztársasággal szemben. A leghevesebb összecsapásra és az egyik legtöbb áldozatot (48 személyt lelőttek, 15 főt felakasztottak) követelő megtorlásra Dunapatajon került sor. A Váry Albert által összeállított listán szereplő 590 áldozat (ebből 367 gyilkosság, 108 tűzharcban életét vesztett személy) közül minden harmadik fegyveres harcban elesett férfi erről a településről származott. E lista alapján a Tanácsköztársaság nagyjából minden tizedik halálos áldozata dunapataji.

        Az előadás Romsics Ignác 40 évvel ezelőtti alapkutatásait kiegészítve napról-napra mutatja be az összecsapást, azt követő megtorlást és a megtorlás utáni vizsgálat történetét. Ehhez a forrásbázist az 1919-1921 között lezajlott több tucat ügyészségi és bírósági eljárás iratai szolgáltatják.

              Az előadásban arra az átfogóbb kérdésre is keresem a választ, hogy miként illeszkedtek a dunapataji események a Szamuely Tibor által személyesen vezetett megtorlás láncolatába.
