Modern History of Spain

Within the territories under the dominion of the Iberian monarchies, on both sides of the Atlantic, we seek to approach the cult rendered to Saint Iphigenia mainly in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. In addition to the specialized bibliography, we rely on the first European and American publications that gave news about this African saint, as well as on the brotherhoods that were the driving force of devotion. With all this, we have raised a geography of images to Iphigenia in sculpture and painting in three continents, and we show how the 1738 Carmelite model of the friar José Pereira de Santana dominated in the representations of the saint in Europe, Africa and in Portuguese America, not so in the American territories of the Hispanic monarchy, being these images particularly novel and some of them unpublished.

This paper is both a reflection on the transition to democracy in Madrid, following the death of dictator Francisco Franco in 1974, as it pertains to the capital city today. It asserts that, though still in existence in certain ways, the spirit of La Movida Madrilena has declined; and Madrid's governmental administration itself has moved towards the neo-liberalization and Europeanization of Spain since the late 1980s. This has effectively created a number of changes in the urban, social, economic and political fabric of the capital city ever since, and not necessarily for the better.

di grande interesse negli ultimi decenni nell’ambito delle correnti
storiografiche della nuova storia sociale: la vita quotidiana, e in particolare tra Spagna e Regno di Napoli in età moderna. In una varietà e molteplicità di “spazi” (il vissuto quotidiano, le condizioni di vita, la sociabilità, l’emarginazione, la cultura materiale) si inserisce la riflessione degli studiosi, consentendo di “leggere” il cammino dell’uomo nelle due sfere, pubblica e privata, che condiziona, interferisce nella quotidianità delle città, delle comunità, delle famiglie, e fornisce “spaccati” di vita vissuta.

Antoni Espino i Òscar Jané, vinculats al Grup de Recerca d’Història Moderna Manuscrits de la UAB, aborden una de les temàtiques que més interès genera darrerament en la historiografia internacional: la frontera com a experiència. Espino començà la tasca investigadora influït pel corrent de la New Militar History, que estudia la interrelació entre societat i guerra en l’Antic Règim, i derivà més tard cap a un enfocament cultural de la història bèl·lica. Òscar Jané compta amb una sòlida trajectòria en l’estudi del fenomen fronterer, participant en diversos estudis comparatius dobre l’Època Moderna i la Contemporània. Guerra, frontera i identitats [Afers, Catarroja-Barcelona, 2015, 282 pp.] està dividit en dos grans blocs que responen a l’àrea dèstudis de cadascun dels autors: guerra i territori; identitat i frontra. En el primer apartat s’hi estudien com quedaren afectats Vic, Tortosa i la Vall d’Aran entre la finalització de la Guerra dels Segadors (1652) i la de la Guerra de Successió (1702-1714). El segon bloc conté un capítol que reflexiona sobre el control de les fronteres durant l’Antic Règim; dos estudis regionals (Andorra i la Cerdanya) entre els segles XVI i XVIII i l’anàlisi de la implantació de la frontera franco-francesa entre els segles XVII i XIX. A partir, doncs, d’estudis de casos concrets, es poden extreure conclusions de caire general, fet que es veu facilitat per la introducció de capítols sobre casos internacionals. At the end of 2012, the Spanish government announced its intention to approve a law to
facilitate recognition of Spanish citizenship to the Sephardim. This law has only
recently got final approval of the Spanish Parliament. In this article, I address the
conceptual-symbolic and political-historical long-term context in which this law is
inserted as well as its development from 2012 to its final approval. I confront its
legitimizing arguments with its concrete results. I conclude by confirming that the notion
of "Sephardic identity" in contemporary Spain does not originate in the Sephardim self-definition. On the contrary, this notion of the Sephardim in Spain is a product of more
than a century of ambivalent policies. This identity construction is used as a
legitimizing argument in adopting certain policies. However, it is not the reason for the
granting of citizenship to the Sephardim. Political and diplomatic strategies, ethnicist
policies, raison d’État have guided and guide the Spanish approach to the Sephardim
since the nineteenth century.

This writing will pay attention to a relatively frequent category in the city of Rome in the XVII century: the cardinal ambassador. More precisely in two figures: Teodoro Trivulzio (1597-1656) and Juan Everardo Nithard (1607-1681). They were two ecclesiastic princes who worked as ambassadors of the King of Spain to the Pope. In the following pages, their social origin and its influence on the development of their careers as men of State and Church will be contrasted. Special attention will be regarded to the public image of the activity of both. Their diplomatic performance will be studied, taking into account their ability for coping into the Spanish and Italian circles of power in Madrid and Rome. Finally, some of their milestones in their respective embassies of the Spanish Monarchy in the Apostolic See will be deeply analysed.

Este artículo traza la evolución de las ideas y el discurso ambientalista durante las últimas décadas del régimen de Franco, entre 1950 y 1975. A lo largo de este período, un grupo de naturalistas y científicos naturales colaboraron con oficiales del régimen y una red conservacionista internacional para proteger espacios concretos de especial valor ecológico. A fines de la década de 1960, a medida que el régimen se debilitaba y el descontento social crecía, apareció un nuevo grupo de activistas que veían la protección ambiental como inseparable de los problemas de justicia social. A través del análisis de la campaña antidesarrollista a propósito de los alrededores de la Albufera en Valencia,
este artículo estudia las tensiones entre estas corrientes que convivieron en los orígenes del movimiento medioambiental en España así como el papel del activismo medioambiental en la erosión de la legitimidad política del régimen.

This article provides an overview of the evolution of environmental ideas and discourse during the final decades of the Franco regime, between 1950 and 1975. Throughout this period, a group of naturalists and natural scientists worked in collaboration with regime officials and an international network of conservationists to protect discrete spaces with special ecological value. By the late 1960s, as the regime weakened and social unrest increased, a new group of activists emerged who understood environmental protection as inextricably linked to issues of social justice. Through an analysis of an antidevelopment campaign carried out in the area surrounding the Albufera de Valencia, this article examines the tensions between these currents in the origins of the Spanish environmental movement, and the role of environmental activism in the
erosion of the dictatorship’s political legitimacy.

This article describes the ways in which Spanish conserva-tionists and environmentalists shaped and challenged state policies during the dictatorship of Francisco Franco. Over the course of the mid-twentieth century, the Franco regime radically transformed the country's physical and demographic landscapes while limiting opportunities for dissent. Nonetheless, beginning shortly after the Civil War, a small number of highly placed nature enthusiasts and scientists worked within official channels to protect discrete spaces and species. In the process, they legitimized environmental language and ideas that were later adopted by more politi-cized activists. During the late 1960s and early 1970s, while working-class groups protested the disproportionate impacts of development on their own neighborhoods, left-wing cultural elites embraced similar complaints to overtly link environmental health with the regime's injustices. This created a progressive discourse, still discernible in contemporary protest politics, in which environmental and social issues were inextricably connected.

Greek emigrants of noble ancestry living in the kingdoms of the Spanish Monarchy tried to get an outstanding position in the society of the Ancien Régime through the recognition of their origin and the grant of social and economic privileges. One of the most common ways to get it was the request of a habit of a military order. This paper displays the cases of Emmanuel Sebastus Melissenus, Anthony Sebastus Pisciotta and the brothers Scipione and Peter Mario Moccia Sebastus.

La pesca del atún con almadraba aparenta ser un conocimiento agotado; probablemente sea esta la pesquería mediterránea más tratada en la historiografía especializada, pese a lo cual y en aparente paradoja, no cabe duda de que la almadrabera es una historia con importantes y llamativas lagunas. Y sí este es el caso de un arte de pesca tan icónico ¿qué decir del resto de artes pesqueros que ni tienen su singularidad social, ni su significado histórico? Pues que raramente trascienden el mero carácter ilustrativo en la narración histórica; en el mejor de los casos se ven reducidos a un papel ancilar en unos discursos centrados, por lo general, en aspectos económicos, sociales o jurídicos, que olvidan la relación directa de esas cuestiones con los instrumentos que permiten la apropiación del recurso: ¿qué tipo de almadraba es la que en 1546 usan unos inmigrantes de Niza en Getaria y Zarautz?, ¿los conflictos que generan se relacionan con la usurpación de pesquerías comunales, como la de Malkorbe que se subasta al mejor postor?3 Estas y algunas otras preguntas tienen que ver con cuestiones económicas, sociales, y jurídicas, pero también instrumentales. Este artículo solamente pretende plantear una aproximación a la evolución histórica de este arte complejo, en apariencia sobradamente conocido, que es único y a la vez diverso, y que naturalmente participa del carácter fragmentario que señala Martínez Shaw a propósito de la literatura almadrabera.

La primera edición de este libro vio la luz coincidiendo con las festividades del mes de Ramadán de 2018. Decíamos entonces que el hecho de que en Madrid y su región casi trescientas mil personas celebraran el mes sagrado del islam es una prueba de que la capital española está abierta al mundo y ha integrado en su vida cotidiana, mal que le pese a algunos, uno de los acervos culturales más importantes de la humanidad. Citábamos a Juan Goytisolo, fallecido unos meses antes, quien decía que la condición necesaria para que la cultura y la civilización estén realmente vivas y den sus mejores frutos está en el encuentro, la hibridación y el cambio, no en las identidades fijas ni en la defensa de ningún esencialismo. La curiosidad, la mezcla y la mesura fueron, precisamente, la receta original del patrimonio cultural islámico clásico, y dentro de él, de la civilización andalusí. Esa parte no siempre bien tratada de la historia de España que la Fundación de Cultura Islámica reivindica desde hace ya casi cuatro décadas, no solo por su valor histórico sino también, y sobre todo, por el diálogo que puede establecer con el presente en muchos terrenos, como precisamente el de la interculturalidad.
Muchos piensan que la presencia del islam en Madrid es una innovación traída por las migraciones de finales del siglo XX. En alguna medida es cierto: así ha ocurrido en otras grandes ciudades de Europa y en ese punto hay que alegrarse de que Madrid se haya abierto al mundo. Sin embargo, si adoptamos una perspectiva histórica más amplia, descubrimos que el islam no tiene nada de novedoso ni de extraño en nuestra ciudad. Al contrario, está enraizado tan profundamente en la historia de la misma que puede afirmarse que Madrid es la única de las actuales capitales europeas que tiene un origen islámico. Y no solo eso, sino que su genealogía islámica es más antigua que la de ciudades icónicas de la historia del islam como son Estambul o El Cairo. ¿Cómo es posible?
Madrid nació a mediados del siglo IX como una pequeña ciudad de la frontera norte de al-Ándalus, situada por tanto en los confines del inmenso mundo islámico medieval, que se extendía hasta las cercanías de China por el Este y hasta el desierto del Sáhara por el Sur. Cuando la ciudad se fundó, con ese nombre aún misterioso de Maŷrit que le dieron las crónicas árabes, Estambul aún era Bizancio y a El Cairo le faltaba casi un siglo para nacer como tal. Maŷrit perteneció durante dos siglos y medio a al-Ándalus, y después de su incorporación al Reino de Castilla aún mantuvo una significativa presencia musulmana durante otros quinientos años más.
Los restos materiales e inmateriales de esa parte de nuestra historia son modestos, pero sobre todo, son muy poco conocidos, tanto para los madrileños como para quienes visitan la ciudad. Por eso, en 2017 se creó el Centro de Estudios sobre el Madrid Islámico (CEMI), un proyecto de la Fundación de Cultura Islámica (FUNCI), para difundir y realzar el patrimonio histórico, artístico y cultural islámico madrileño, tanto el andalusí como el que se relaciona con la presencia islámica minoritaria en los siglos posteriores. Con ello queremos también contribuir a una percepción de la mezcla cultural como característica propia de la Villa desde su fundación misma. Para el conjunto del pueblo de Madrid, es un modo de tomar conciencia de que la diversidad no es algo reciente ni importado, sino que es una característica de toda la historia humana. Para los madrileños de cultura musulmana, es además una forma de sentirse aún más apegados y orgullosos de su ciudad.
La primera edición de Madrid islámico: la historia recuperada tuvo una vida breve, pues el interés que despertó y la distribución gratuita de que fue objeto por parte del Ayuntamiento de Madrid provocó el agotamiento de la tirada en poco más de una semana. Dos años después, la colaboración con la editorial Anbatat ha permitido llevar a feliz término una segunda edición corregida de la obra, en la que se incorporan nuevos datos, y a partir de la cual se han realizado además versiones en árabe y en inglés.
Esperamos que esta obra renovada suscite el interés del lector y ayude a despertar su curiosidad por esa «ciudad notable de al-Ándalus», como la llamaban las crónicas, que sigue viviendo en el Madrid actual.

Este libro pone de relieve el papel de las mujeres en la
doble vertiente de la esclavitud: por una parte, subraya
la importancia numérica de la esclavitud femenina en la
historia de España, evidenciando las huellas que han
dejado la esclavas en las fuentes históricas, literarias e
iconográficas; y por otra, resalta el papel desempeñado
por mujeres españolas que, insertas en el movimiento
abolicionista, lucharon por acabar con la institución
esclavista, recuperando así la memoria de ambas. De
esta forma, el libro se estructura en dos grandes bloques
temáticos: el primero dedicado a las mujeres esclavas y
el segundo, a la labor de las españolas abolicionistas.

This paper offers a view about the process of configuration and the economic exploitation of Bonabal Dehesa (Alange). It is property of clarisas nuns of Zafra –Santa María del Valle Monastery–, its control and benefits were object of significant tensions among that religious community, the zone´s neighbours
and Encomienda of Alange between 15th and 16th centuries. The generated documentation between 18th century
and the beginning of 19th century, more extensive and accessible; it detects the involvement of socioeconomic
elites of Almendralejo in a management model, designed by their owners, that will be the subjet ofour attention.

Se analiza la carretería y el transporte con acémilas de mediana y larga
distancia que desarrollaron los habitantes del municipio leonés de Sajambre en los siglos
XVI, XVII y XVIII, mediante el estudio de las vías de comunicación utilizadas, las rutas y
destinos frecuentados, los medios de transporte y las mercancías. Entre otras aportaciones, se proporciona la fecha más antigua de introducción y cultivo del maíz en la provincia de León (1616); se documenta el tránsito por el Camino Real del Oriente, cuya trayectoria se reconstruye; se atestiguan los viajes de los sajambriegos, con carros y con rocines, desde la costa Cantábrica hasta la Sierra de Gredos; se amplía la relación de productos con los que comerciaban los leoneses del siglo XVII

(Abstract in English below) En 1962 el prestigioso abogado Antonio Garrigues Díaz-Cañabate fue nombrado embajador en Estados Unidos con el propósito fundamental de renegociar los acuerdos bilaterales de 1953, que tenían una validez de diez años. Los aspectos más directamente relacionados con esa importantísima negociación son dejados de lado en esta investigación para centrar la atención en la intensa actividad diplomática llevada a cabo por Garrigues para mejorar la percepción que desde Estados Unidos se tenía de la dictadura franquista. La personalidad de Garrigues se situaba precisamente en los márgenes más liberales dentro del consenso franquista y quiso transmitir a la sociedad norteamericana el mensaje de que el franquismo era una fórmula propia de evolución hacia un futuro régimen homologable al del resto de países occidentales. Garrigues representaba el ala aperturista del régimen en unos años sesenta caracterizados precisamente por el aperturismo, pero también por las rigideces extemporáneas y la exasperante lentitud del ritmo evolutivo del régimen autoritario español.

ABSTRACT. In 1962 Antonio Garrigues Díaz-Cañabate, a prestigious Spanish lawyer, was appointed as ambassador to the United States. His primary task was to renegotiate the 1953 bilateral agreements, which were valid for ten years. In this paper, the most directly related aspects to that very important negotiation have been leaving aside in order to focus on the intense diplomatic activity deployed by Garrigues to improve the perception of the Franco dictatorship that existed in the United States. The Garrigues’ personality was liberal but yet inside the Francoist consensus and he wished to convey to the American society a message that draws the Franco regime as the appropriate Spanish formula of evolution towards a future system that should be similar to those in the Western countries. Garrigues was part thus of the aperturista (political evolutionist) wing of the regime. The 1960s were years of aperturismo, but of unseasonable rigidities and exasperating slowness as well.

This article focuses on the repression of erotic and pornographic imagery (artworks, statues and figurines) by the Inquisition in Madrid during the last six years of its existence between 1814 and 1820. This period in the Inquisition's history has tended to be overlooked and dismissed as insignificant. After tracing the history of the Spanish Inquisition's desultory attempts in earlier years to suppress sexual imagery deemed to offend public piety, this article examines an unusual cluster of cases involving erotic or pornographic images during those six years. The article examines these cases and argues that we need to eschew simplistic narratives in which historians have presented the Inquisition as a moribund institution pathetically pursuing insignificant cases. The documentary evidence suggests that the inquisitors in Madrid were, if anything, fiercely determined to restore the fortunes of the Inquisition and its position within the absolutist monarchy of King Fernando VII. The inquisitors’ campaign against erotic and pornographic imagery was, alongside a focus on freemasonry, part of a quest for political and social legitimacy in a changing and increasingly hostile environment.

This paper analyzes the role played by the Cadiz-Gibraltar axis in the liberal resistance to absolutism during the last years of Ferdinand VII reign. The strength of this axis was based on the fluidity of the relations between two exceptional spaces. On the one hand, Gibraltar, where the confluence of economical and political interests favored the collaboration between Spanish, European and American conspirators. On the other hand, Cadiz, which became a kind of promised land for those determined to maintain the struggle against absolutism, mainly due to the presence of the French division established after the campaign of the so-called Hundred Thousand Sons of Saint Louis, since their commanders did not allow Spanish authorities to carry out indiscriminate persecution of liberals. The result was the configuration of an advantageous space to conspiracy, which not only made possible an understanding between liberal refugees in both cities, but also, as Spanish authorities criticized, the participation in conspiracies of a transnational extent

España se halla inmersa dentro de un contexto europeo y, como en los demás países, la arqueología se ha visto mediatiza da por los cambios de régimen a lo largo de las tres últi mas centurias. Desde su uso por parte de la monarquía como medio de legitimar sus prerrogativas en el siglo XVIII, la influencia que en ella ejerce la emergencia de los nacionalismos en el XIX y su plasmación en la creación de instituciones, y las distintas visicitudes políticas de este siglo, en todas las épocas se constata la poco explícita pero indudable relación entre arqueología y poder. / ABSTRACT
This article offers an outline of the history of Spanish archaeology during the eighteenth, nineteenth and twentieth centuries. It focuses on the relationship between the development of archaeology and the political interests which marked each historical moment. Spain is embedded in a European context. As in the other European countries archaeology has been influenced by regime changes throughout the last three centuries. In the eigthteenth century archaeology was used as a tool by the monarchy in order to legitimize its prerogatives. In the nineteenth century the emergence of nationalisms motivated its institutionalization. Political changes in this century have also found their expression in archaeology. Over the whole of this period there has been a clear, though seldon explicit, relationship between archaeology and power.

This article argues the necessity to rethink the role of the politically committed female intellectual in nineteenth-century Spain. Concepción Arenal’s intervention on the cuestión social, her adaptation of the concept of “industrial education” and her use of legal rhetoric and of rhetorical devices typical of those applied by lawyers in the courtroom, serve as a point of departure to explain how the figure of the woman of letters can be understood as an agent of social reform in the most important social preoccupation of that time: the working masses and their relationship with industrialists.

(Abstract in English below) La cuestión acerca de la libertad religiosa tiene una gran relevancia en la conformación del gran conflicto bisecular de las dos Españas. No se trató de un problema práctico en el sentido de que nunca hubo en España una sustancial población de confesión distinta a la católica. Fue ante todo una discusión sobre los principios mismos de la comunidad política española, que enfrentó a los partidarios de la libertad individual con la idea de una nación esencialmente católica. Distinguimos para ello seis etapas: 1812-1854, 1854-1868, 1868-1876, 1876-1931, 1931-1936 y 1936-1976.

ABSTRACT. Debate about religious freedom is a very relevant issue for understanding the so-called Two Spains conflict. It was not a practical problem in the sense that never there was a sizable population in Spain who professed religions other than Catholic. It was above all an argument about the very foundations of the Spanish political community that confronted supporters of individual liberty to an idea of an essentially Catholic nation. The story is organized in six phases: 1812-1854, 1854-1868, 1868-1876, 1876-1931, 1931-1936 and 1936-1976.
