Роджер Бэкон (ок. 1214 — ок. 1292) — английский философ и естествоиспытатель, монах-францисканец, профессор богословия, автор трактатов по алхимии. В сборник включены ранее не переводившиеся на русский язык работы известных и мало известных авторов конца XIX века начала XX века о Роджере Бэконе. В начале небольшая книга Герберта Стенли Редгроува «Роджер Бэкон. Отец экспериментальной науки и средневекового оккультизма» дает представление об экспериментах и эзотерическом наследии философа. Статья М. М. Пэттисона Мьюра «Роджер Бэкон: его отношение к алхимии и химии» более подробно раскрывает алхимический аспект его творчества. Далее следуют две одноименные, но различные в подходах работы — «Роджер Бэкон и порох», посвященные экспериментам с порохом, подполковника Г. У. Л Хайма и религиоведа Линна Торндайка. В заключение в статье «Роджер Бэкон и медицина» Э. Т. Уитингтон. раскрывает исторические особенности медицины XIII века и подробно останавливается на медицинских трактатах Р. Бэкона. Перевод снабжен предисловием и послесловием. Conhecer o enquadramento e as ferramentas metodológicas desse campo de estudos, é essencial para realizar algum tipo de produção científica neste âmbito. Com o presente artigo, esperamos fornecer a todos os interessados, um contributo nesse sentido.

This volume contains Czech translations of two short, yet significant works by the Renaissance Platonist Marsilio Ficino (1433–1499), On Light (De lumine) and On the Sun (De sole), together with their Latin text and an introductory study on “Marsilio Ficino and His Metaphysics of Light”. The two intimately related writings were originally published
together in Florence in 1493. They were, in fact, reworked versions of earlier treatises: The Quid sit lumen (1476, published in an edition of the Theologia Platonica, Ficino’s chef-d’oeuvre) and
De comparatione solis ad Deum (1492). Both texts belong to Ficinoʼs
multifarious commentaries on Plato. The De lumine focuses on the
relationship between light and God and on Plotinusʼ metaphysics
of light; while the De sole builds upon Platoʼs parable of the Sun,
expanding on the analogy between seeing and understanding.
In De lumine, Ficino names God as an “immense light dwelling
in itself”. Light is for him “a visible godhead” referring us to God.
The De sole is a mature work of the Florentine Platonist in which
his philosophical and theological concepts are presented together
with allegorical hermeneutics as well as astrological elements. It is
not only in these two short treatises that Ficino demonstrates his
interest in the solar motif and the metaphysics of light; his Platonic
theology, for example, opens with reflections on the Sun and light,
and similar motives recur constantly throughout his writings.
Ficino did not intend to provide strictly logical metaphysics but
used comparisons of light and the Sun allegorically and poetically as a means of ascending from the visible to the invisible, from
the Sun and light to God. Also interesting are Ficino’s astrological
explanations. Although he is an advocate of the geocentric model
of the universe he gives the Sun an extraordinarily important role.
What he proposes is thus a “metaphysical heliocentrism”. However, he sometimes seems to transgress the limits of pure metaphysics, entering a new solar cosmology. Besides the motives mentioned above, the introduction presents an overview of Ficinoʼs cosmology and anthropology as well as his metaphysics and epistemology. As for the latter, the role of light is the main focus of attention. In this context, a brief history of the metaphysics of light before Ficino is given. The introduction also deals with the role of allegory in Ficinoʼs thought, explaining what sense philosophy actually had for him. It further analyzes his notion of Earth as a living being. Finally, some remarks are made on the influence of Ficino’s metaphysics of light and his treatises
De lumine and De sole, particularly on Copernicus, Patrizi and Paracelsian circles in Germany (esp. on Heinrich Khunrath).
The translation is based on the first edition of Ficino’s Opera omnia (Basel 1576) while taking the editio princeps into consideration when warranted. The Latin text reprinted here is that of 1576. Major divergences from the 1493 version are mentioned in footnotes.

The Four Books of pseudo-Democritus, written in the first century AD, rank among the very earliest known alchemical writings. In this volume, Matteo Martelli presents not only a fresh edition and translation of the surviving Greek fragments, but also, for the first time, additional materials preserved in Syriac. The volume also presents important examples of the medieval and early modern reception of these writings, including the dialogue of Synesius and Dioscorus - the most influential Byzantine commentary on the Four Books - and previously unpublished Latin translations of both the Four Books and Synesius' commentary made by Matthaeus Zuber in 1606. Accompanied by a full introduction and commentary, these sources offer new and significant insights into the world of ancient chemistry: practical recipes and lists of ingredients, clues to the doctrinal content of ancient alchemy, and early hints of a tradition that linked the alchemist ‘Democritus' to the wisdom of Egypt and Persia.

This is a postprint version of chapter 3 in E. Tobin and C. Ambrosio (eds.), Theory Choice in the History of Chemical Practices, SpringerBriefs in History of Chemistry, 2016. Robert Boyle's famous Sceptical Chymist (1661) is a dialogue on matter theory, between a Peripatetic Aristotelian (Themistius), a Chymist (Philoponus) and a Sceptic (Carneades), and moderated by a supposedly impartial individual (Eleutherius). At first glance, the book seems to offer an ideal case in which to study theory choice. Boyle introduces at least three types of competing theories of matter: the four-element theory of Aristotle, the three-principle theory of Paracelsus and the atomistic theory. In fact, the discussion actually focusses on one system only, the Paracelsian theory of the 'three principles' of Sulphur, Mercury and Salt, also referred to as the tria prima. The promise of theory choice between three competing systems hence thwarted, a more fruitful avenue of research is to analyse the book from the point of view of a mitigated type of theory choice, that between acceptance of the tria prima theory or its rejection and exploration of other theories.

In my book The Genesis of Freemasonry I proposed how natural philosopher and Freemason Dr Jean Theophilus Desaguliers was responsible for creating the third degree by the mid-1720s. Before this, there were two 'parts' being performed; the Entered Apprentice and the Fellow Craft. The new three degree style ritual soon spread. It seemed that Freemasons soon wanted to explore deeper pathways within Masonry, leading to new ideas being developed. Chevalier Ramsey was a Jacobite Mason who had gone to France to tutor the sons of aristocrats, and in his Masonic address in 1737, he famously outlined that Freemasonry was linked to the Crusaders and Chivalric Orders. His Oration put forward that after being preserved in the British Isles, it was transported to France, and though there is no evidence that Masonry was associated in any way to the Crusaders or Chivalry, it does show that at this time there was a developing interest in Chivalric Orders in relation to Freemasonry. Though Ramsey did not set out any plans for new Chivalric Masonic Orders in his 'Oration', his address certainly assisted to inspire them.

This article analyses four unpublished draft letters from Nicolas Fatio de Duiller to Isaac Newton, dating from June to August 1693, and held in the Special Collections in the Universiteitsbibliotheek in Leiden. Overall, these letters enrich our knowledge of Fatio-Newton’s alchemical correspondence in June 1693, a phase which likely represents the peak of the two natural philosophers’ alchemical collaboration. By scrutinising the content of the letters, and situating them in relation to primary and secondary sources, the article will place Newton and Fatio’s epistolary exchange in relation to the social and historical background of late seventeenth-century London, bringing to light so far undisclosed aspects of the networks, alchemical practices, and expertise of the two natural philosophers.

Three major anthologies of Latin alchemy were published between 1602 and 1702: the six-volume 'Theatrum Chemicum," the single-volume "Musaeum Hermeticum," and the two-volume "Bibliotheca Chemica Curiosa," the last in large folios. Each had a clear editorial design.

In the sixteenth century, a new disease appeared in India. Described for the first time in the ayurvedic classic Bhāvaprakāśa by Bhāvamiśra, it was called phiraṅgaroga, “disease of the Franks”. Given the name and what we know from contemporary reports of European observers in India, this was very likely the correlate  to the so-called “French disease” or “Morbus Gallicus”, i.e., syphilis. The  Bhāvaprakāśa describes the symptoms and various stages of phiraṅgaroga and presents seven different cures. Five of these prescribe the use of mercury: Three recipes for the ingestion of mercury, one recipe for using mercury as a fumigant and one in which mercury is rubbed into the patient's hands. In this chapter, I discuss Bhāvamiśṛa's representation of the disease and the therapies he proposes for it. I in particular analyze the use of mercury in the anti-phiraṅgaroga medicines, contextualising them within the history of the use of mercury in ayurvedic medicine and exploring possible links with antisyphilitic therapies in European, Persian, Arabic and Chinese medicine.

In 1930, at the Deutscher Orientalistentag in Vienna, the Semitist Paul Kraus presented his findings on a vast body of Arabic writings attributed to an alchemist called Ǧābir ibn Ḥayyān. Contrary to the traditional interpretation that dated the corpus in the beginning of the eighth century, and based on a thorough philological analysis, he proclaimed it to be part of the Ismaeli literature of the late ninth or early tenth century. Through this discovery Kraus established himself as one of the most promising scholars of Islamic studies of his generation. This essay traces the circumstances that led to his findings and tries to shed light on the ramifications of his breakthrough discovery. Along his scholarly stages, leading him from Prague to Berlin, Paris and then Cairo, his intellectual development, the scholarly traditions he followed, and the academic networks that fostered his career are unfolded. Furthermore, the adverse historical and political conditions that forced him into exile repeatedly in the 1930s and led to his suicide in 1944 are examined.

Around the eleventh century CE, Sanskrit medical texts began to record profound changes in the methods used for drug manufacture. New substances, especially metallic and non-metallic minerals, were added to the ayurvedic pharmacopoeia or were given new prominence. More significantly, however, new ways of processing raw materials were introduced that were thought to make them fit for medical use. Most of the new, but also many of the traditional substances were now put through a series of complicated, multistage processes before they were used as components of compound medicines. In this article, I will use the example of recipes for iron-based medicines, which describe the processing of iron and other substances to trace the evolution of these changes and to query whether the changes in drug production flow from earlier developments, or whether they represent a more fundamental shift in the theory and practice of medicine. I also consider whether the introduction of new substances and the new methods of drug production can be related to notions concerning the potency of substances and formulations.
