This dissertation extends the work of Signal Detection Theory (SDT) (Green & Swets, 1966; Swets, 1964) in the social sciences by applying it to romantic relationships, specifically initial romantic encounters (i.e. formal or informal first few dates, or random, chance encounters). The term relational red flag is put forth to describe the detection of signals in initial romantic encounters that may be perceived as any undesirable quality, which can be a characteristic, behavior, state, or trait that a person would not want in a potential romantic partner. These undesirable qualities can be costly to a healthy, stable relationship because they conflict with the individual’s own expectations, similarities, and compatibilities. The significant findings of this dissertation are derived from a two-study, mixed methods approach. The results from Study 1 led to the formation of a relational red flag typology, comprised of the nine main types and 23 subtypes of relational red flags, which also included the identification of the most severe relational red flags. Gender differences were also discovered. Study 2 built off the foundation provided by Study 1, revealing that relational red flags change across young adulthood, depending on an individual’s specific dating experiences and their own personal development. Findings also showed that an individual’s family and social network can play a vital role in the detection and processing of relational red flags. Additionally, a sequential identification and decision-making process was also discovered, which explains how individuals detect, label, and then handle relational red flags. Lastly, the best and worst approaches to handling relational red flags was also identified. Discussions, limitations, and future research are provided for both studies.

A number of motored auger holes have been drilled in 2002 and 2006 in four sand-clay deposits preserved in dissolution pockets within the Dinantian limestones of the watershed north of the Vesdre valley. These deposits of unknown age are currently classified as (Tertiary) SBL in the new geological map of Wallonia. We present detailed lithostratigraphic logs of the deposits and describe the results of sedimentological and mineralogical analyses. In particular, K-Ar dating of neoformed Mn oxides found at the base of one augerhole at Rechain yielded ages ranging from Cenomanian to Santonian, allowing us to place the Rechain and Andrimont deposits within the early Late Cretaceous. This is fully consistent with their topographic location very close beneath the trace of the pre-Cretaceous erosion surface and makes them the westernmost remains of the Hergenrath Member of the Late Cretaceous Aachen Formation. This chapter uses qualitative interview data from urban young adults to outline the new “rules of the game” for dating relationships and premarital sexuality in Shanghai. Lovers are expected to express intimacy, passion and commitment in their romantic relationships. At the same time, alternative sexual scripts have emerged that allow for sex and intimacy without commitment.

Se empleó un enfoque cuantitativo, con un diseño no experimental y ex post facto, con alcances descriptivos y correlacionales. La muestra fue constituida por 586 adolescentes mexicanos, con edades comprendidas entre 14 y 19 años. Entre otros resultados, se destaca que el apego hacia el padre guarda relación con al menos algún tipo de violencia en las relaciones de pareja, además de que ambos sexos son víctimas y perpetradores de conductas violentas en sus relaciones de noviazgo.

Different perspectives have analyze the phenomenon of partner violence from different associated factors, arguing that not only is a factor involved in violence but different variables, such as attachment. Therefore, this research analyzes the importance of the attachment with parents and peers and its association with the presence of violent behavior in dating relationships in adolescents. A quantitative approach was used, with a non-experimental and ex post facto design, the scope was descriptive and correlational. The sample consisted of 586 Mexican adolescents, aged between 14 and 19 years. Among other results, it is emphasized that the attachment to the father is related to at least some type of violence in relationships, in addition to the fact that both sexes are victims and perpetrators of violent behavior in their courtship relationships.
