- Els galaics (llatí Gallaeci) eren els habitants de la província romana de Gal·lècia, avui Galícia part del nord de Portugal, Astúries i la Província de Lleó. La seva transcripció és gal·lecs però convencionalment s'esmenten com galaics per evitar confusions amb els moderns gallecs. Es dividien en bràcars (gallaeci bracarii) i lucenses (gallaeci lucenses). They spoke a Q-Celtic language related to Northeastern Hispano-Celtic, called Gallaecian or Northwestern Hispano-Celtic. The region was annexed by the Romans in the time of Caesar Augustus during the Cantabrian Wars, a war which initiated the assimilation of the Gallaeci into Latin culture. The endonym of modern-day Galicians, galegos, derives directly from the name of this people. (en)

El término gallaecus pasó a designar, desde finales del Imperio de Occidente, al conjunto de habitantes de Gallaecia y Galicia (siendo, de hecho, el origen lingüístico del gentilicio actual "gallego"). Ocupaban la práctica totalidad de la actual Galicia exceptuando las comarcas de Valdeorras y Trives en Orense (habitadas por astures gigurros y tiburos, respectivamente) y parte de Los Ancares de Lugo (ocupados por los astures lougeos). - Gallekowie – lud celtycki, w okresie sprzed podboju rzymskiego zamieszkujący północną i północno-zachodnią część Półwyspu Iberyjskiego. Budowali liczne ufortyfikowane osady zwane castro. Osady te były budowane na wzgórzach lub mniejszych wzniesieniach, silnie ufortyfikowane czasami nawet trzema pierścieniami murów. Domostwa wewnątrz osady budowane były na planie koła, z kamiennymi ścianami i stożkowymi dachami z gałęzi lub słomy. Gospodarka Galleków opierała się na hodowli i rybołówstwie. Pozostawili również ślady wysoko rozwiniętej sztuki złotniczej. Głównym bogiem panteonu Galleków był bóg ognia. (pl)

A primeira referência aos galaicos é feita por Apiano, que comenta que Cépio, depois de perseguir e não conseguir alcançar e derrotar Viriato, numa primeira fase, virou-se contra os vetões e contra os galaicos, destruindo os seus campos. A primeira vez que se registou uma derrota dos galaicos foi no confronto com Décimo Júnio Bruto na Batalha do Douro, datada pelas fontes antigas em 9 de Junho de 137 a.C. e que, pela proeza de os derrotar, tomou o cognome de "o Galaico": "Por esse motivo, uma vez que eles eram muito difíceis de combater, os próprios galaicos não só deram o sobrenome ao homem que derrotou os lusitanos mas também o tornaram tão conhecido que a maioria dos lusitanos já são chamados galaicos." A designação da tribo celebra a forte resistência dada por este povo aos romanos, que estendem a designação às restantes tribos do noroeste peninsular. (pt)
