Adaptive control for non-negative and compartmental dynamical systems with applications to general anesthesia. (English) Zbl 1030.93034

The authors develop a direct adaptive control framework for adaptive setpoint regulation of linear uncertain nonnegative and compartmental systems. The authors have written a highly readable and interesting paper. They set the stage in an excellent introduction, continue with mathematical preliminaries and then the main theorems with adaptive feedback control laws follow, where basically there are two versions: one without nonnegativity restriction on the inputs and the other with these restriction.
An important part of their paper, adaptive control for general anesthesia, contains some worked-out examples which seem to be close to medical reality. In this section they simulate adaptive controllers as well, and they give a careful analysis of the medical usefulness of their models.
This paper is a beautiful blend between interesting control theory and an important application area.
