Summary: When dealing with standard generalized constitutive relations involving an internal variable and its gradient, the main difficulty is the lack of independence of the state variables. It can be overcome by extending the constitutive relations to the whole domain in such a way that the Clausius-Duhem inequality is ensured in a wide sense. Then, a variational principle can be proposed to solve the initial value problem in an incremental fashion.
