The artful universe. (English) Zbl 0867.00008

Oxford: Oxford University Press. x, 274 p. (1995).
The author discusses some ways in which the physical nature of perceived reality has affected other parts of human culture: painting, architecture and landscapes, language, and music. He also discusses the dichotomy between chaos and order, particularly as it applies to the evolution of life on Earth. He returns to the competing philosophies of mathematics (formalism, inventionism, Platonism, and constructivism) discussed in his previous books and shows their relationships to different kinds of music. The book is nicely illustrated and contains an interesting bibliography.
