The paper gives a detailed study of the boundary properties of functions in invariant subspaces of the backward shift operator in terms of the spectral measures of one-dimensional perturbations of the compression of the shift to those subspaces.
Some of the obtained results are applied to problems concerning multiplication and division of Cauchy-Stieltjes type integrals.
