The purpose of the article is to give a general presentation of the subject on the whole. Basic notions and facts appear at first in the classical situation and are considered after that again from the group point of view. Connections with other parts of mathematics are indicated. The article contains a historical essay, a model enumeration and short discussion of basic parts of the modern commutative harmonic analysis.
