Akbar Hussain Durrani (TI) belonged to the Pakistan Administrative Service (PAS) and was a grade 22 BPS officer. After serving 33 years in the Pakistan Civil Service, he retired as the Federal Secretary Ministry of Narcotics Control on 26th October 2021.[1] He currently serves as a member of the Federal Public Service Commission (FPSC) for a period of three (03) years.[2]

Mr. Durrani has the privilege of having served in top bureaucratic positions such as Chief Secretary of Punjab, Federal Secretary of Information & Broadcasting, Federal Secretary of Interprovincial Coordination, Federal Secretary of Education and Professional Training, and Additional Secretary, Cabinet Division.

He previously served in a variety of key positions in Balochistan for 19 years, including as Secretary of Home and Tribal Affairs for 5/1-2 years in three different tenures. He played a pivotal role in clearing No-Go Areas in Balochistan by planning, executing, and leading operations against religious, sectarian and ethnic insurgents.[3] He also served as Secretary of Finance, Secretary of Information & Technology, Secretary of Higher and Technical Education, and Secretary of Prosecution in the Government of Balochistan (GoB). In 2009, he was appointed Commissioner of the Sibi Division.

Additionally, Mr. Durrani worked in the development sector for three years (2005-2008). He was the Provincial Head of Education Sector Reform Assistance (ESRA); a program of RTI International (formerly Research Triangle Institute), North Carolina, USA. The program focused on four primary areas: policy and planning, professional development, adult and youth literacy and public-private partnership. The project was a success in primary education and received much praise at all levels.

He previously worked for the Punjab Government for 10 years in various key positions. Prior to joining the civil service, Mr. Durrani served in the Pakistan Army as a commissioned officer and belonged to the prestigious Special Service Group (SSG-Two Commando). He was an SSG instructor from 1987-1988. He is course-mates with General Naveed Mukhtar[4] (former DG ISI) AND General Hidayat ur Rehman (former Commander Peshawar Corps).[5]

A passionate reader of history, politics, and religion, Mr. Durrani provides ways to address Pakistan's many challenges.

Mr. Akbar Durrani was honoured with an award that is a mark of distinction for civil servants: Tamgha-i-Imtiaz (TI) or Award of Excellence by the former president of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, General Pervez Musharraf in the year 2005.
