🎗️ Block Out Cancer 🎗️ When 3-year-old Martina arrived at an emergency room for concerning symptoms, doctors initially suspected pneumonia. But an X-ray revealed something more — a rare and aggressive tumor in Martina’s lung. Despite treatment, the mango-sized tumor continued to grow. Ultimately, she needed emergency surgery, airlifted by Survival Flight to Mott where teams recognized the urgency of her case. Using U-M’s 3D print lab, surgery teams created a detailed replica of the tumor and surrounding organs, giving them an intricate blueprint of what they were up against, helping plan for a successful surgery to remove it. 💛 Meet Carmen one of the Little Victors from our 2024 calendar. “Carmen was diagnosed with high-risk stage M neuroblastoma in February 2023 at C.S. Mott Children's Hospital. I will never forget the exact date because the pain of that day still feels like it was yesterday. But taking it one day at a time and having the support and love of her amazing hematology/oncology and BMT team have made this journey seem less horrible. As of today, she is responding to treatment better than we could have ever hoped for. We are forever grateful and blessed for having such wonderful teams at Michigan taking care of and saving our warrior. Her primary nurses Meg, Alyssa and Ann have been a blessing!! When it seemed like nothing would get better, they cared for her as their own and us as well. UPDATE: As of June 2024, she completed treatment and is in remission. She had a very active summer doing everything she wasn’t able to do going through treatment spending a lot of time in sand and the many lakes in Michigan. She has since started preschool, swimming, and soccer and is doing extremely well. Carmen turned 4-years-old on September 13.” Hail to Carmen and all our Little Victors! 💛 Meet Amara one of the Little Victors from our 2024 calendar. “Amara was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia in October 2022 at two months old. She received the first two months of treatment at another hospital, but received the rest of her care at Mott, including two rounds of chemo and a bone marrow transplant in June 2023. All together she spent 4+ months inpatient on the oncology floor. We are forever grateful for the care she received at Mott. She fought hard and overcame so many obstacles. She is now in remission and at home with her parents and big brother, Asher. She is thriving and enjoying life outside of the hospital.” Hail to Amara and all our Little Victors! 💛 🎗️ Inaugural Block Out Cancer Parade in recognition of National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month! Our a-MAIZE-ing community partners, staff, physicians, patients and families gathered to highlight Childhood Cancer Awareness Month in a parade of support for our Little Victors fighting cancer. Little Victors decorated their rooms, IV poles, wheelchairs and wagons in yellow and gold. Patients and families watched from their rooms and then joined in on the parade fun.
