You're facing a disengaged student in your class. How do you reignite their interest and participation?

Learn About Students: Understand their interests, backgrounds, and learning styles. Value Individuality: Show that you care about them as individuals, not just students. Use Names and Celebrate Successes: Greet them by name and recognize their achievements. Encourage Open Dialogue: Create a space for students to share their thoughts and feelings. Be Supportive and Approachable: Make yourself available for help and guidance.

A small gesture, like greeting students by name or acknowledging their effort, creates a lasting impact. When students feel recognized for who they are, they become more willing to participate and invest in the learning process. For me, this approach has always led to a more harmonious and productive classroom environment. The foundation of trust and mutual respect that develops through these personal connections also enables me to push students to their full potential. They become more open to constructive feedback and motivated to improve, knowing that I’m invested in their success beyond the academics.

Know thy student. Before you can address the disengagement, you need to figure out where it's stemming from and why. In my experience, I found it helpful to consult with other teachers who also see this student in their classrooms. Some questions to consider asking: -In what ways does student x express interest in your classroom? -Have you noticed a time/s when student x was not engaged/interested in your lesson? -What strategies have you utilized to re-engage the student? Were any successful? -

In the classroom, building rapport can be achieved by asking someone to explain their perspective on a given issue. Subject matter will dictate to what degree this is possible. However, in subjects where perspective is less a part of in-class discussion, you can still build rapport by engaging in conversation that is more tangential to the topic at hand.

Identifying Underlying Issues for Disengagement: Initiate Conversations: Talk to the student to understand their lack of interest. Explore Personal and Classroom Factors: Identify if issues are personal or related to classroom dynamics. Pinpoint the Problem: Determine the specific barriers to their engagement. Modify Your Approach: Adjust lesson plans or provide additional support based on their needs. Follow Up: Check in regularly to monitor progress and adjust strategies as necessary.

Sometimes, in-class conversations do not stimulate engagement as you would have liked. Many factors can contribute to a student's disengagement, and identifying the underlying issues is not always easy. Depending on your setting or environment, you can find appropriate and discrete ways of interacting with your students that will show your concern and open the door for their feedback. It could certainly be something in the classroom, but it is often not.

Incorporate Relevant Content: Integrate these interests into lessons and assignments (e.g., using music in a project). Make Learning Relevant: Connect the curriculum to real-world applications related to their interests. Encourage Creativity: Allow students to express their interests in projects or presentations. Seek Feedback: Ask students how these integrations impact their engagement and motivation.

We do not often realize how much a student's outside interests can contribute to bringing energy to the classroom. It will take some serious intentionality, but weaving in outside interests aligned with your students' passions will serve you very well in maintaining interest and leading to success—both inside and outside the classroom.

My go-to is "Open Q&A". Students can ask anything, and I answer. I can ask anything, and the students answer. While sticking to the curriculum is often viewed as a necessity, disengaged or stressed students are less likely to retain or apply any knowledge shared. So why not take a break from the curriculum, do an open forum session for 15 min, then get back to the grind after this fun loving and much needed break.

Provide Options: Allow students to choose project topics or formats for demonstrating understanding. Encourage Collaboration: Let them decide whether to work independently or in groups. Foster Autonomy: Support students in taking responsibility for their learning. Solicit Feedback: Ask students how they feel about their choices and their impact on engagement. Monitor Participation: Observe how choice affects their involvement and motivation in class.

Welcome All Questions: Clearly communicate that every question is valued. Model Curiosity: Ask your own questions to demonstrate the importance of inquiry. Acknowledge Contributions: Recognize student questions and connect them to class discussions. Facilitate Discussions: Use questions to spark conversations and deepen understanding. Encourage Follow-Up: Prompt students to build on each other's questions for richer dialogue.
