What do you do if your students are disengaged?

1. Build Relationships: Take the time to connect with your students on a personal level. Show interest in their lives and create a supportive and inclusive classroom environment. 2. Make Learning Relevant: Try to make the content meaningful and relevant to your students' lives. Use real-world examples and connect the material to their interests and experiences. 3. Use Varied Teaching Methods: Incorporate a variety of teaching methods to cater to different learning styles. This can include group activities, multimedia presentations, hands-on projects, and interactive discussions.

Sometimes talking to students, should be accompanied with observing their behaviours in the classroom environment and also keeping in touch with their families. A lot of times children are not in the position to articulate for themselves if they need something or not as a result of some trauma, past experience etc. In those situations it is important for the teachers to make that connection by observing their body language and connecting with families to get an overall picture. Basis this the teacher can create structures to support the child, leverage family and friends to build a safe environment for the students !

As far as MY students are concerned, the cause is very simple: they are teenagers and don't have the slightest interest in school...

If students are disengaged, it's crucial to pinpoint the root causes and adapt teaching approaches accordingly. Building positive relationships, incorporating diverse teaching methods, and making the content relevant can reignite their interest. Providing autonomy and differentiating instruction to meet individual needs also fosters engagement and motivation in the classroom. Regularly seeking feedback and adjusting strategies further supports student involvement and learning.

That's something you have always to do... even if your time is not endless, and you have to plan lessons and exams and... and...

Vary is the keyword. Invent. You have to perform as an illusionist, a magician, an actor, a fire eater... attention can never be taken for granted in front of your class!

I'll divide them in groups. Give them topics and ask them to present. Also will have activities which are related to their academics but will be a fun activity through which they'll learn.

I've always found it useful to spend time establishing the goals of Amy class when starting out on a learning journey with a new group. If the learners took part in establishing the goal(s) they'll much more likely to put in a little extra effort when they hit a slump and don't feel like engaging. Reminding them of the goal they set for themselves and helping them see how current activities and content connect to helps a ton. But it all stems from fostering agency from the start.

Include their interests in the lesson. Don’t jump right into every lesson. Instead, engage them in talk about their own experiences that’s related to the lesson. Carry the conversation throughout the lesson. When they see how their lives fit into the lesson, they’re more likely to engage and buy in to the content.
