So, this is a well-written book. I really liked the characters. These are high fantasy versions of paranormal tropes like werewolves and zombies with some forbidden romance thrown in. I was really invested in this fated mates thing they have going for the plot, but then it took a left turn that put me off as someone who reads a lot of romance because this is really not a romance. It also becomes very clear that these characters are doing their best, but are being misled.

A phenomenal high fantasy novel; Holly Lisle blew me away. DIPLOMACY OF WOLVES is gritty, rough, realistic, violent, dark, sexual, romantic, intense, emotional, complex and thoroughly engaging. Just when I thought I had a firm handle on where she was taking me, the plot veered slightly, introducing a new dimension I hadn't expected. A brilliant start to what promises to be a wonderful trilogy. (A )

I first read this book when I was probably around 10, and vague memories of it have haunted me ever since. Luckily quarantine has left me too emotionally exhausted to read my big girl books, and I finally gave this one a reread.
In a lot of ways, it holds up better than I would have expected. The concept is solid and fairly well-developed given its target audience, and the conflict feels real and consequential while still being appropriate enough for the protagonists' ages.
I was slightly disappointed that despite the slavery, murder, and genocide that take place, this book is much less scary than I remember it being. Probably a good thing as it is, after all, a children's book. Other than that, he ending is a little cheesy and (in some ways) deeply weird, but kudos to 10 year old me—this one's not bad, like, at all.… (more)

This is more of textbook... how to NOT write stories based on bad examples. Not kidding, that's actually the introduction!
So because of that I just shelved it unread, & I'm not going to rate it. (For some reason kindle won't let me delete it)
