The wars of King Alfred of Wessex, Henty style. A realistic tale of warfare, barbarism and cruelty, decently camouflaged in Victorian language and an unrealistic tale of true love and high adventure superimposed on it. Thus did G.A. There is a really charming retelling of King Alfred's cake burning incident. You knew it was coming, but you had to laugh anyway.
