Johann Georg I (1585-1656) Elector of Saxony during the Thirty Years' War. He initially supported the Protestant cause and was a member of the Protestant Union, but he switched sides and joined the Catholic League in 1615, which ultimately led to the Saxony's neutrality during the war. Johann Georg was a skilled politician and diplomat and worked to maintain a balance of power in the Holy Roman Empire. He also supported the arts and sciences and his court in Dresden became a center of Baroque culture
