If I hadn't seen the original, it probably would be four stars, but as it is, it's a pretty useless remake for Yanks only. The first hour is pretty boring, then James MCavoy kicks off his typical psychopathic mannerisms and it's decent. The ending is more action packed than the original, so at least there's a bit of a change there, otherwise it’s not worth more than 6/10.

Szene für Szene eine Kopie des dänischen Originals, bis zum Finale, das hier völlig neu geschrieben wurde. Die europäische und diese amerikanische Version sind exemplarische Beispiele für unterschiedliche filmische Herangehensweisen an den Zuschauer. Die amerikanische Version ist ein Handwerk von angemessener Filmemacher-Qualität, das dank der guten Leitung der Schauspieler und eines ausgezeichneten Originaldrehbuchs überrascht und die Spannung ähnlich wie das Original hält. Ein psychologisches Spiel mit ahnungslosen Figuren und dem Zuschauer, eine schockierende Pointe. Das Finale wird dann mit reinen Genremethoden eskaliert, es ist actionreicher und greift sogar den aktuellen Trend der starken Frauenfiguren auf. Verglichen mit dem kompromisslosen und fast märtyrerhaft harten europäischen Film ist dies jedoch deshalb ein faderes Werk, das man schneller vergisst. ***1/2

The original was crueler and more distinctive, but it literally went all in for the brutal twist, leaving the believable character behaviour by the wayside. I understand that the resignation of the Danish heroes was deliberate for the film's message, but even to me at the time of its release, it struck me as a rather piss-poor scripted construct. As expected, the American remake smooths out the sharp edges, but also gives the story a smoother flow and erases or better explains those moments that were most problematic in terms of logic in the original film. James Watkins is a good enough director to keep the film's strongest card: the social tensions between two disparate families. While I didn't really want a remake of a film only two years old, didn't look forward to it, and didn't support it in the cinema, I would probably recommend it more to a mainstream audience.

The Daltons have met the handsome Paddy and his wife on holiday and now visit them one day at their country estate. But it soon becomes clear that something is not right. And leaving won't be easy at all. Speak No Evil is a gripping and suspenseful psychological thriller that isn't afraid to open up interesting themes, but unfortunately slips into B-movie waters towards the end.
