Usage

[edit]

This template may be used on Wiktionary entry pages to quote from a collection of Herman Melville's works entitled Billy Budd and Other Stories (1951). It can be used to create a link to an online version of the work at the Internet Archive.

The work includes the unfinished novella Billy Budd (written 1888–1891). The most authoritative version of that text is regarded as Herman Melville (1962) Harrison Hayford and Merton M. Sealts Jr., editors, Billy Budd, Sailor, Chicago, Ill.: University of Chicago Press, →OCLC, which is not currently available online. The version in this work is regarded as less reliable.

Parameters

[edit]

The template takes the following parameters:

  • |story=mandatory in some cases: if quoting from the story indicated in the second column of the following table, the parameter should be given the value indicated in the first column. If this parameter is omitted, the template defaults to Billy Budd.
Parameter value Result
Bartleby Bartleby
Encantadas The Encantadas or Enchanted Isles
Paradise The Paradise of Bachelors
Tartarus The Tartarus of Maids
Lightning The Lightning-Rod Man
Benito Cereno Benito Cereno
Piazza The Piazza
  • |sketch= – if quoting from The Encantadas or Enchanted Isles, specify the sketch number in Arabic numerals, from |sketch=1 to |sketch=10.
  • |1= or |chapter=mandatory in some cases: if quoting from Billy Budd, specify |chapter=Preface or the chapter number quoted from in uppercase Roman numerals.
  • |2= or |page=, or |pages=mandatory in some cases: the page number(s) quoted from. When quoting a range of pages, note the following:
    • Separate the first and last pages of the range with an en dash, like this: |pages=224–225.
    • You must also use |pageref= to specify the page number that the template should link to (usually the page on which the Wiktionary entry appears).
You must specify this information to have the template link to the online version of the work.
  • |3=, |text=, or |passage= – a passage to be quoted.
  • |footer= – a comment on the passage quoted.
  • |brackets= – use |brackets=on to surround a quotation with brackets. This indicates that the quotation either contains a mere mention of a term (for example, "some people find the word manoeuvre hard to spell") rather than an actual use of it (for example, "we need to manoeuvre carefully to avoid causing upset"), or does not provide an actual instance of a term but provides information about related terms.
