Kelvedon, Tiptree & Tollesbury Pier Light Railway

[edit]

According to Butt, R. V. J. (October 1995). The Directory of Railway Stations: details every public and private passenger station, halt, platform and stopping place, past and present (1st ed.). Sparkford: Patrick Stephens Ltd. pp. 129, 291. ISBN 978-1-85260-508-7. OCLC 60251199. OL 11956311M. this line/company had the name "Kelvedon, Tiptree & Tollesbury Pier Light Railway".

A websearch shows many other sources offering the same information.

Thanks for the comment, but I'm afraid I can't agree, for a number of reasons. Butt is extremely slapdash over accuracy, and I never feel able to rely on him. If you look at Paye's book, page 17, Paye reproduces the Light Railway Order. There's no "Pier" in it, which I suggest is pretty conclusive. When the Pier extension was authorised, that was by means of a general-purpose GER Act, which did not change the name of the line; by then of course it was just a branch of the GER and didn't need a company title. I tried google for the "Pier" title but three pages of results didn't return anything relevant. Quick's book is much more reliable than Butt, chiefly because it it subject to continuous peer review -- a new edition is coming out in two or three months with some updates. He deosn't mention the Pier. Carter doesn't quote the Pier, although I concede that Carter is not free of error; and finally Grant doesn't use the "Pier". But thanks for the comment; I can't speak for others but I would always rather have something queried than not. Regards Afterbrunel (talk) 16:03, 27 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
