Einstieg

[edit]

Hallo Hoch :-)
willkommen hier in commons.

--Paddy 05:29, 16 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Hi, regarding Image:Nokia 7650 (stock.xchng).jpg. Images from stock.xnch are not public domain. For details, see Commons:Bad sources. Thuresson 08:53, 24 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Stock.xchng

[edit]

Hello ! You may know my interest in the current stock.xchg policy since I launched the poll about it based on my legal analysis. I'd just like to point out that maybe, in the future, you avoid mentioning the source into the file name, like you did for Image:Nokia 7650 (stock.xchng).jpg. The new policy insists on not building any galleries or categories for those pictures, I guess it's better not to make them too easily searchable too. By the way, most of the time, the CopyrightedFreeUse and Insert-Conditions-Here copyright tags are appropriate or even better than PD (see Commons:Copyright tags). That's all. Hope don't mind this note and have a good day ! :) villy 09:14, 25 Mar 2005 (UTC)

I see what you mean and I agree. As mentioned in my reply to Thuresson I wasn't aware of this whole discussion when I uploaded the image. Feel free to move it to another filename if you prefer. regards, High on a tree 11:29, 25 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Hu Jintao

[edit]

Hi, saw your comment about the Hu Jintao picture on Shizhao's talk. Unfortunately it was deleted before image restoring was installed. Please reupload the image (your source was http://img.radiobras.gov.br/Aberto/index.php/Imagens.Principal.00.0.2004-11-13). The template:Agencia Brasil is completely accepted at the moment, because they put their content under a CC license ([1] at bottom of page). At the moment of deletion it was under suspicion. Grüsse. NielsF 01:18, 26 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Well, I was aware of that discussion, but I thought that deletion of those images had been held until they got word from the copyright holder. And out of many Agencia Brasil photos which I've uploaded this was the only one which got deleted. Anyway, Shizhao has restored the description page and uploaded the original photo from the source, I put the cropped version over it and everything is fine now, I'm just left wondering how often this kind of thing happens here. In any case, nice of you to have noticed this and tell me about the past ABr problem, dank u wel ;) regards, High on a tree 06:49, 26 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, good catch I fixed the preloaded debate to subst: the image title. This means that it will give it correctly :) As for adding the reason automatically, I can't think of an easy way to do that at the moment but I will work on it when I get a free moment.--Nilfanion 22:44, 16 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, please delete this picture I had uploaded. I cannot provide the source and cannot remember if I originally imported it from :en or an officiel US page. Dake 20:55, 20 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! I made a summary in English for this image, in order to make clear (I hope so) that I am its author. --Praxides 17:15, 24 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

 • I think I didn't make myself clear. The photo was restored and digited by request of the copyright holder, in order to put it into public domain. This file and others were unavailable before the project take place. I can send the project terms (doc in Portuguese). A site in the web will be created soon, if we get financial support for it --Praxides 10:08, 25 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Image deletion warning Image:Photo_P_Lamy-2.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this image, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. If the file is up for deletion because it has been superseded by a superior derivative of your work, consider the notion that although the file may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new file.
In all cases, please do not take the deletion request personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

"a web page"?

[edit]

[2] Hi, it would really help if you gave a link to the website in question when marking copyvios. How else can we verify it's a violation? And being from a website doesn't necessarily make it a copyvio. We have tons of stuff that's freely licensed taken from "Una Pagina Web". Thank you for helping us with copyright violations, but please be more specific. Thanks! Rocket000 (talk) 07:58, 28 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Citizendium

[edit]

Re citizendium article length, is Wikipedia's median value not showing the same trend?

Also, wouldn't a better graph be a composite of (total articles * median length), which is basically total words over time. 69.142.154.10 00:39, 29 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, HaeB!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Hi, thanks for your cool charts on today's Signpost. Could you please fix two errors that are bothering me. On the first chart please move the apostrophe to the end of the word so it reads Wikipedians'. In the second chart could you please make "everyday" into two words, like "every day"? Thank you! -Stickpen (talk) 01:20, 15 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for participating in Wiki Loves Monuments 2013! Please help with this survey.

Dear HaeB,
Thank you for contributing to Wiki Loves Monuments 2013, and for sharing your pictures with the whole world! We would like to ask again a few minutes of your time.

Thanks to the participation of people like you, the contest gathered more than 365,000 pictures of cultural heritage objects from more than 50 countries around the world, becoming the largest photography competition to have ever taken place.

You can find all your pictures in your upload log, and are of course very welcome to keep uploading images and help develop Wikimedia Commons, even though you will not be able to win more prizes (just yet).

If you'd like to start editing relevant Wikipedia articles and share your knowledge with other people, please go to the Wikipedia Welcome page for more information, guidance, and help.

To make future contests even more successful than this year, we would like to invite you to share your experiences with us in a short survey. Please fill in this short survey in your own language, and help us learn what you liked and didn't like about Wiki Loves Monuments 2013.

Kind regards,

the Wiki Loves Monuments team

Thank you for helping with the backlog of images for deletion! I really appreciate your help! Ellin Beltz (talk) 08:01, 5 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the kind words, Ellin Beltz! But perhaps you meant to thank someone else instead? I haven't contributed to reducing the backlog (I'm not an admin), in fact I'm guilty of increasing it myself by nominating several of the images that you just deleted ;) In any case, thank you a lot for your work on closing deletion requests. Regards, HaeB (talk) 13:10, 5 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The backlog I was mentioning was in getting the images tagged or nominated. We always need more nominators and commentors on deletions; in fact that's more important really than someone checking the nomination and pushing the big scary button. So I am very happy to see your contributions and I hope you feel like making more of them! Thank you again for being involved; hope to see more of you! File:Davy Jones (Geneva, IL, 2006).jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

I'm not the original uploader, but I have uploaded two cropped versions that avoid the packaging to focus on the product itself. They should serve the same encyclopedic purpose. Regards, HaeB (talk) 11:14, 10 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Wiki Loves Monuments 2016 in the United States – Results!

[edit]

Want to show your participation in Wiki Loves Monuments 2016? Add User Wiki Loves Monuments 2016 to your userpage!

Thank you for contributing to Wiki Loves Monuments 2016 in the United States during the month of October! The United States contest saw over 1,700 people contribute over 11,000 great photos of cultural and historic sites from all over the United States and its territories. In addition to National Register of Historic Places sites, we welcomed uploads of sites designated by state- and local-level historical institutions and societies. Hundreds of these photos are already being used to illustrate Wikipedia articles!

We're excited to announce that our national judging process has concluded, and that we have selected the winners of Wiki Loves Monuments 2016 in the United States! We were amazed by all of the uploads, and regret having to narrow it down to just 10. That being said – congratulations to our national winners and their amazing shots! Our 10 winners will be sent to the international Wiki Loves Monuments jury, who will then select the winners of the international contest. If you're interested in seeing the winners of the other various national contests as they are announced, you may do so at Wiki Loves Monuments 2016 winners.

Finally, we have also created a feedback form for all participants in the United States to fill out. The survey is optional and anonymous, and only takes a minute or two – we hope to use the feedback to organize better events in the future!

Once again, thank you for participating in Wiki Loves Monuments 2016, and we hope to see you again for future Commons photography events! ~Kevin Payravi (talk) 06:28, 2 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there! My name is Kevin, one of the organizers of Wiki Loves Monuments in the United States. Last year, you contributed to our 2016 event. It was a great success thanks to you and many others, with over 1,700 people contributing over 11,000 great photos of cultural and historic sites from all over the United States. Over 1,000 of these photos now help illustrate Wikipedia articles, making our open knowledge about United States history and heritage all the better.

I'm pleased to say that we're back this year with Wiki Loves Monuments 2017 in the United States, and I'd like to welcome you to participate once again in the event. Check out our updated event page for more information, including updated tips, lists, and prizes. Like last year, you'll be able to upload your new photos of any registered historical site in the United States through the end of September (even if the photos were taken before this month).

Once again, thank you for participating in Wiki Loves Monuments 2016, and we hope to see you in this year's event! If you'd like to respond to this message directly, please do so on my talk page. ~Kevin Payravi (talk) 08:05, 1 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Category discussion warning

Konrad Förstner has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Image formats

[edit]

Hi, thank you for uploading some images to Commons. Here's a tip: Use the right image format for the kind of image. As a general rule, this is JPEG for photographs, and PNG for most other kinds of images. Using the wrong format can bloat the file size and/or degrade the quality of the image. Most modern graphics applications will give you the choice between these formats among others. See also Commons:File types#Images. Good luck. Smjg (talk) 12:08, 11 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Smjg: I assume you are referring to File:A schematic of app-based COVID-19 contact tracing (Fig. 4 from Ferretti et al. 2020).jpg. I agree that JPEG is not the best file format for this kind of diagram; as someone already noted, an SVG (not PNG) version would be best.
However, as you could have found out from the file name or the file description, I'm actually not the creator of this image - it was taken from this open access paper. I suggest that you contact the authors under the email address given there. Regards, HaeB (talk) 01:33, 12 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry - I had indeed missed the source. However, as I look now, I don't see that particular image anywhere in that source.... Smjg (talk) 19:18, 12 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Smjg: Good catch - it was taken from an earlier version of the paper dated March 31, which has since been updated/overwritten on the sciencemag website with a version dated May 8, but using the same DOI. I had no idea that Science does this kind of thing; the content changes in this case (e.g. dropping the mention of QR codes from this figure) seem significant.
Fortunately the Internet Archive has preserved the earlier version of the paper and the figure. I have updated the image description page, and might upload the new version of the figure separately.
Regards, HaeB (talk) 07:51, 13 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
OK, thanks for letting me know. I might see if I can 'clean up' the image and then upload it as a PNG. Of course, SVG would be better, albeit more work, and I'm not sure how the new graph with colour gradations would translate thereto. Smjg (talk) 16:37, 13 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

If you created these pages, please note that the fact that they have been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with them, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Hello,

I was alerted to this problem of duplicates on my talk page by admin User:Pi.1415926535 back in December. This is a category for these files since they are exact duplicates of the jpg files and clutter up categories. Best, Krok6kola (talk) 15:23, 30 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Cry bullying

[edit]

Seriously, don't waste my time with the cry bullying again. Your the one who contacted me first in an overly aggressive, lecturing way both times. I know what the guidelines say. I don't need to have them repeatedly to me over and over in a clearly bad faithed way like I'm stupid or something. So seriously, just skip it next time. I'm not here to throw palm frowns at the feet of every person with a bad attitude and an opinion who comes along though. Sorry. I'm a volunteer like everyone else. I'm not your or anyone else's servant. Adamant1 (talk) 06:00, 1 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Context, for the record: The above response was in response to [3], see also [4]. (Adamant1 was blocked soon afterwards, following this COM:AN/U thread where this and other concerns about their behavior were discussed.)
