Nakazonae (中備) are variously shaped intercolumnar struts used mainly in Japanese religious architecture. After the Heian period they had become technically superfluous, but they were maintained as decorations. The main types are the kentozuka, the hana-hijiki, the warizuka and the kaerumata.
