Common land

[edit]

Is there actually any legal basis – or point – in including "commons" in the title of this template? It doesn't list anything actually named a common, and as I understand it, the specific legal rights attached to common land are a concept of English, not Scots, law. Perhaps there is a special meaning in Scots law as well, but it is certainly not mentioned in the linked Wikipedia article on commons. If anybody knows the legal basis, I'd be most grateful to find out, but otherwise, I propose to remove the word from the template because I consider it would be misleading if there is no actual concept of a Scots common. – Kieran T (talk) 15:29, 24 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I agree with the removal. I created this template name after consulting other templates for city parks... probably an English one. I have asked some other people and they agree that commons do not (at least to their or my knowledge) exist in Scotland, I don't know about legality however. I am not 100% sure how to move it so perhaps someone else could. (Bobbacon 15:34, 24 January 2007 (UTC))[reply]
Okay, I'll go ahead and do that. It's not entirely trivial since every article using the template must have the link changed, but there aren't too many of those so it won't take particularly long. – Kieran T (talk) 15:40, 24 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Bother. I've just noticed there's a related category, Category:Parks and commons in Aberdeen, as well. I'll finish the template changes first, so I don't get confused, then return to that. – Kieran T (talk) 15:49, 24 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Post-script: it appears that Edinburgh and Glasgow have similarly-named categories — also, notably, lacking any examples of "commons". I don't have time right now to nominate three categories for renaming and reply to all the arguments which may ensue, so I'm going to leave it for the moment. If anybody else would like to pick up the baton, that'd be great! – Kieran T (talk) 12:41, 25 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
