Amidst the 2023-2024 Manipur violence, thousands of violent incidents occurred in and around Imphal city, the capital of the state of Manipur. At least 504 violent incidents occurred in Imphal city itself, with 597 incidents occurring in total in the outskirts of the city.[n 2]
As a result of the violence, almost the entirety of the Kuki population has been expelled, and almost all of the Kuki quarter of the city has been destroyed.
List of Known Fatal Incidents
[edit]At least 26 people have been killed in Imphal itself as of April 1, 2024. These include 25 civilians (4 Meitei, 20 Kuki-Zo, 1 Unspecified) and 1 off-duty Indian soldier (of the Kom tribe). All but 4 of the dead were killed by Meitei assailants, with 1 killed by Kuki militants, and 3 by unidentified assailants.
At least 7 fatal incidents have occurred within Imphal city itself, with 32 others occurring on the outskirts of the city. Other fatal incidents have been alleged, but have not yet been confirmed. As a result, this list is not comprehensive.
Within Imphal City
[edit]- 4-5 May 2023: On May 4, Meitei mobs rioted against the Kuki minority. Through torture, shootings, and beatings, 13 Kuki civilians were lynched on May 4, with 3 more dead on May 5. Kuki buildings were burned and demolished, and numerous instances of rape were reported. Kuki lawmakers were beaten and tortured, including a Manipur MLA, and some were even killed. Following the riots, almost all of the Kuki sector of the city was destroyed and the Kuki population was expelled.
- 24 May 2023: Kuki militants shot and killed a Meitei civilian in the Kwakeithel locality of Imphal city. The incident sparked paranoia regarding the activities of Kuki militants within Imphal.
- 4 June 2023: An irate Meitei mob swarmed an ambulance, guarded by police, which was said to contain Kuki militants. The ambulance actually contained a Meitei mother and her half-Kuki child, along with another Meitei woman. The mob attacked and torched the ambulance, injuring 2 police commandos and killing everyone inside.
- 06 July 2023: Unknown individuals, purportedly Meitei gunmen, fatally shot a woman belonging to the Kuki-Zo tribal community near a school in the Kwakeithel Mayai Koibi area within the jurisdiction of the Lamphel police station in Imphal city, located in Imphal West district, Manipur.
- 22 August 2023: Unknown armed assailants fatally shot a 50-year-old man in Heingang, located in Imphal city within Imphal West district, Manipur. The reasons behind the attack remain unidentified, but is speculated to be related to the ongoing ethnic violence in the state.
- 16 September 2023: Sometime between 16 or 17 September, three unknown assailants forcefully abducted an off-duty Indian Army jawan, who hailed from the Kom community, at gunpoint from his residence in the Tarung Neikailong locality in Imphal city, situated in Imphal West district, Manipur. His body was discovered on September 17, 2023.
- 23 February 2024: Unidentified armed individuals set off an improvised explosive device (IED) within the premises of a student organization located on the DM University campus in Imphal city, located in Imphal West district, Manipur. 1 person was killed and another injured, with a car also being damaged.
Outskirts
[edit]- 21-22 June 2023: Meitei village volunteers approached N. Boljang village, suspecting it to be under the control of Kuki militants, and encountered heavy gunfire. Security forces later joined the gunfight, which escalated to encompass the region spanning from Tairenpokpi to N. Boljang village. Lasting overnight and into the following day, the exchange resulted in the death of at least 7 Kuki militants, with at least 5 village volunteers, 2 Assam Rifles personnel, and 2 civilians sustaining injuries.
- 29 June 2023: Heavily armed (likely Meitei) assailants exchanged gunfire with (likely Kuki) village volunteers and Indian army personnel at the Kuki village of Haraothel, in Imphal West district of Manipur, during which four people were killed, including a police personnel who was hit by a stray bullet, while five others were injured. The affiliations of the 3 others killed is unclear. Both Kukis and Meiteis have claimed the attack was on their village volunteers by armed assailants of the other community.
- 10 July 2023: Kuki militants exchanged gunfire with state police, Assam Rifles personnel and Meitei village volunteers in the Kadangband area. One Meitei village volunteer and four Kuki militants were killed during the exchange. The clashes started when Meitei volunteers began to clash with Kuki militants, forcing them to retreat, resulting in a confrontation near Geljang village's cemetery. Two Kuki militants were found dead at the scene, along with bunkers and explosive devices. Assam Rifles also joined the gunfight after their camp was attacked by Kuki militants.
