- تنانين عدن: تأملات عن تطور ذكاء الإنسان (بالإنجليزيّة: The Dragons of Eden: Speculations on the Evolution of Human Intelligence) هو كتاب صادر عام 1977 للكاتب كارل ساغان، وفيه يدمج الكاتب بين علوم البيولوجيا التطورية وعلم النفس وعلوم الحاسوب وعلم الإنسان، ليعطي صورة متكاملة عن كيفية تطوّر الذكاء الإنسانيّ. يناقش ساغان فيه البحث عن طريقة كميّة لقياس الذكاء. ويقول أن نسبة حجم الدماغ إلى وزن الجسم في الإنسان تعتبر مؤشرًا جيدًا للغاية عن الذكاء، حيث بلغت تلك النسبة أقصى مدى لها في الإنسان، ويليه الدولفين، بالرغم من أنّه يرى أن هذا التناسب لا يصلح للتطبيق على المستويات الصغيرة (بالتحديد في النمل)، حيث يُصنَّفون في مقدمة القائمة نظرًا لأجسامهم الضئيلة. كما ناقش الكتاب موضوعات أخرى منها تطوّر دماغ البشر (مع التأكيد على وظيفة القشرة المخية الجديدة في البشر)، والغرض التطوّريّ من النوم والأحلام، وإيضاح علامات القدرات اللغويّة في الشيمبانزي، وغاية المخاوف الفطريّة والأساطير في النوع البشريّ. جاء عنوان الكتاب «تنانين عدن» مستعارًا من المفهوم القديم القائل بأن الإنسان صارع من أجل البقاء مواجهًا الحيوانات المفترسة، وبالتحديد خوفه من الزواحف، والذي أدى إلى نشوء المعتقدات الثقافيّة والأساطير حول التنانين. فاز الكتاب بجائزة بوليتزر عن فئة الأعمال غير الخيالية. وفي 2002 نشر كل من جون سكويلز ودوريون ساغان كتابًا، مستكملين مسيرة هذا الكتاب، جاء بعنوان «بدءً من التنانين Up from Dragons». - Los dragones del Edén: Especulaciones sobre la evolución de la inteligencia humana es un libro de Carl Sagan galardonado con el Premio Pulitzer en 1978; esta obra, que destaca dentro de sus primeros libros de divulgación del conocimiento científico, alcanzó pronto renombre mundial y es utilizada como referencia en los cursos de introducción a la ciencia. En ella Sagan combina los campos de la evolución biológica, la antropología, la genética y las neurociencias para ofrecer una perspectiva de cómo evolucionó la inteligencia humana. Carl Sagan, astrofísico de profesión, dedicó gran parte de su investigación a la búsqueda de inteligencia extraterrestre, lo que lo llevó en parte al estudio de la evolución del hombre para tener una mejor idea de cómo se da la inteligencia en el universo. Los Dragones del Edén y otros libros que escribió después son parte del esfuerzo de Carl Sagan por difundir la ciencia a través de su propia investigación; en este libro se explora la prehistoria hasta la época actual, indagando en la evolución del ser humano en función de su legado genético y de la evolución del cerebro. La evolución del hombre y el mismo origen de la vida apasionaban a Sagan tanto como la posibilidad de saber quiénes habitan otros sistemas estelares similares al nuestro; estos temas pertenecientes a la biología no se encontraban precisamente dentro de su especialidad, como él mismo comentaría: "Escribir un libro sobre un tema tan alejado de la propia especialidad es, en el mejor de los casos, aventurado. Aun así, como he intentado explicar, la tentación fue irresistible." Sin embargo, el resultado fue un éxito que le valió el Premio Pulitzer en 1978. Sagan, doctor en astrofísica, realizó además estudios de evolución y genética con prestigiosos catedráticos de su época; en particular estudió el origen de los organismos con los genetistas Hermann J. Muller y Joshua Lederberg. Este modo de pensar le llevó a ser considerado, junto con Lederberg, como pionero de la exobiología, o sea, el estudio de las posibilidades de existencia de vida independiente fuera del planeta Tierra, o la búsqueda de vida extraterrestre como disciplina científica. - The Dragons of Eden: Speculations on the Evolution of Human Intelligence is a 1977 book by Carl Sagan, in which the author combines the fields of anthropology, evolutionary biology, psychology, and computer science to give a perspective on how human intelligence may have evolved. Sagan discusses the search for a quantitative means of measuring intelligence. He argues that the brain to body mass ratio is an extremely good correlative indicator for intelligence, with humans having the highest ratio and dolphins the second highest, though he views the trend as breaking down at smaller scales, with some small animals (ants in particular) placing disproportionately high on the list. Other topics mentioned include the evolution of the brain (with emphasis on the function of the neocortex in humans), the evolutionary purpose of sleep and dreams, demonstration of sign language abilities by chimps and the purpose of mankind's innate fears and myths. The title "The Dragons of Eden" is borrowed from the notion that man's early struggle for survival in the face of predators, and in particular a fear of reptiles, may have led to cultural beliefs and myths about dragons. The Dragons of Eden won a Pulitzer Prize. In 2002, John Skoyles and Dorion Sagan published a follow-up entitled Up from Dragons. (en)
