- Als Shotgun bezeichnet man beim American Football und Canadian Football eine Aufstellung der Offense, bei der der Quarterback nicht direkt hinter dem Center steht, sondern etwas entfernt. Im Normalfall ist der Abstand 5 bis 7 Yards groß. Diese Aufstellung wird oft bei Passspielzügen benutzt, bei Laufspielzügen wird meist die I-Formation bevorzugt. Dabei steht der Quarterback direkt hinter dem Center. Dieser gibt den Ball durch einen Snap zum Quarterback, der in der Shotgun-Formation – ebenso wie beim Punten als auch beim Kicken – Long Snap genannt wird. Die Technik ist jedoch eine deutlich andere: Während beim Kicking Game der Long Snap mit beiden Händen und hart ausgeführt wird, ist er in der Shotgun weich und einhändig auszuführen. Während des Snaps darf der Center nicht angegriffen werden. Da der Quarterback direkt weiter hinten steht, hat er etwas mehr Zeit, die freien Wide Receiver auszumachen. Cette formation est la base de nombreuses équipes dans des situations évidentes de passe alors que d'autres l'utilisent de manière régulière. Dans cette position, le quarterback reçoit le ballon du centre non pas au niveau de la ligne d'engagement mais 4 à 5 yards en arrière. Un avantage de cette position est de lui donner plus de temps pour localiser ses receveurs disponibles, un autre étant qu'elle lui permet d'avoir un regard d'ensemble sur la position défensive des adversaires. Les désavantages de cette formation sont que la défense s'attend à une passe bien qu'un running back puisse également prendre le ballon pour courir et que le risque de mauvaise transmission entre le quarteback et le centre est plus élevé. - The shotgun formation is a formation used by the offensive team in gridiron football mainly for passing plays, although some teams use it as their base formation. Instead of the quarterback receiving the snap from center at the line of scrimmage, in the shotgun he stands farther back, often five to seven yards off the line. Sometimes the quarterback will have a back on one or both sides before the snap, while other times he will be the lone player in the backfield with everyone spread out as receivers. The shotgun formation can offer certain advantages. The offensive linemen have more room to maneuver behind the scrimmage line and form a tighter, more cohesive oval “pocket” in which the quarterback is protected from “blitzing” by the defense. The defense knows a pass is more than likely coming, particularly from an empty set lacking any running backs, and there is a higher risk of a botched snap than in a simple center/quarterback exchange. If the defense is planning a pass rush, this formation gives fast defensive players more open and exposed targets in the offensive backfield, with less cluttered “blitzing” routes to the quarterback and any other halfback in the offensive backfield. Shotgun combines elements of the short punt and spread formations — "spread" in that it has receivers spread widely instead of close to or behind the interior line players. The origins of the term are thought to be that it is like a "shotgun" in spraying receivers around the field. (The alignment of the players also suggests the shape of an actual shotgun.) Formations similar or identical to the shotgun used decades previously would be called names such as "spread double wing". Short punt formations (so called because the distance between the snapper and the ostensible punter is shorter than in long punt formation) do not usually have as much emphasis on wide receivers. Jest używana głównie do zagrań podaniowych, chociaż niektóre drużyny używają jej jako swojego podstawowego ustawienia. W formacji tej, rozgrywający zamiast otrzymywać snap od swojego centra na LOS, stoi w pewnej odległości (5–7 jardów) od owej linii. Czasem rozgrywający ma przy sobie zawodnika z pozycji running back, do ochrony przed blitzem. Formacja typu shotgun może oferować przewagę w różny sposób.
