- En Amérique du Nord, un political général est un officier dénué d’expérience militaire ou de formation spécifique, qui au cours d'une guerre a été nommé à un poste de haut commandement dans l’armée pour des raisons politiques, ou grâce à ses relations, ou pour satisfaire un groupe de pression (lobby). Le political général est une figure connue en particulier pendant la guerre de Sécession. Certains political generals préoccupés essentiellement par leur carrière, et mus par la jalousie, l'entêtement, l'ignorance ou l'appât du gain, ont été à l'origine de désastres militaires (et civils dans les zones occupées) – d'autres political generals ont rendu de notables services à leur cause. Certains ont connu des succès au début de leur activité militaire, puis ont totalement décliné – d'autres au contraire ont gagné en expérience et en qualités humaines au cours du conflit. (fr)
