- Nicholas Lou Saban (* 31. Oktober 1951 in Fairmont, West Virginia) ist ein US-amerikanischer American-Football-Trainer kroatischer Abstammung. Er ist seit Januar 2007 Head Coach des College-Football-Teams der University of Alabama. Seine Karriere begann er als Spieler an der Kent State University, für die er von 1970 bis 1972 als Defensive Back spielte. Anschließend war er bis 1989 bei verschiedenen Collegemannschaften als Assistenztrainer tätig. 1990 betreute er schließlich mit den Toledo Rockets von der University of Toledo seine erste Mannschaft als Head Coach. Nach nur einem Jahr wechselte er zu den Cleveland Browns in die National Football League (NFL), um dort als Defensive Coordinator tätig zu sein. Zwischen 1995 und 1999 trainierte er wieder ein Collegeteam – die Michigan State University. Im Jahr 2000 ging er für vier Jahre zur Louisiana State University (LSU). Mit der LSU konnte er 2001 und 2003 den Sugar Bowl gewinnen, welcher 2003 auch das BCS National Championship Game war. Nach dem Sieg 2003 wurde er auch von der Associated Press als National Coach of the Year ausgezeichnet und er gewann den als bester Collegetrainer des Jahres. 2005 ging er dann wieder für zwei Jahre in die NFL und trainierte dort die Miami Dolphins. 2007 wechselte er schließlich zur University of Alabama, mit der er 2009, 2011, 2012, 2015, 2017 und 2020 die nationale Meisterschaft gewinnen konnte. Saban previously served as head coach of the National Football League's Miami Dolphins and at three other universities: Louisiana State University (LSU), Michigan State University, and the University of Toledo. Saban is considered by many to be the greatest coach in college football history. Saban led the LSU Tigers to the BCS National Championship in 2003 and the Alabama Crimson Tide to BCS and AP national championships in 2009, 2011, 2012, and College Football Playoff championships in 2015, 2017 and 2020. He has won seven national titles as a head coach, the most in college football history. He became the first coach in college football history to win a national championship with two different Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) schools since the inception of the AP Poll in 1936. Saban and Bear Bryant are the only coaches to win an SEC championship at two different schools. Saban's career record as a college head coach is 279-69–1. In 2013, Saban was inducted into the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame. Saban has also coached four Heisman Trophy winners at Alabama: Mark Ingram II (2009), Derrick Henry (2015), DeVonta Smith (2020), and Bryce Young (2021). (en)

Saban a auparavant été l'entraîneur principal de trois autres équipes universitaires, les Rockets de Toledo, les Spartans de Michigan State et les Tigers de LSU, avant d'entraîner au niveau professionnel les Dolphins de Miami dans la National Football League (NFL) pendant deux saisons. Saban a remporté le championnat national universitaire à sept reprises : il remporte le BCS National Championship Game en 2003 avec LSU ainsi qu'avec Alabama en 2009, 2011 et 2012. Avec ce programme, il gagne également le College Football Championship Game en 2015, 2017 et 2020. Son contrat portant sur huit ans, de 2017 à 2025, et d'un montant total de 65 millions de dollars fait de lui l'un des entraîneurs les mieux payé du sport nord-américain. Il est avec (en) et Urban Meyer l'un des trois entraîneurs à gagner le titre national avec deux équipes de Division I FBS différentes dans l'histoire du football américain universitaire. Saban et Bear Bryant sont les seuls entraîneurs à avoir gagné le titre de conférence SEC avec deux universités différentes. En mai 2013, il est intronisé au Hall of Fame de l'université de l'Alabama.
