- Music Box Films is a distributor of foreign and independent film in theatrical, DVD/Blu-ray, and video-on-demand markets in the United States. Based in Chicago, Music Box Films is independently owned and operated by the Southport Music Box Corporation, which also owns and operates the Music Box Theatre, Chicago's premiere venue for independent and foreign films. Founded in 2007, the company's first releases were Tuya's Marriage, OSS 117: Cairo, Nest of Spies, and Tell No One, the latter of which became a notable foreign-language film success in the United States, grossing over $6,000,000 and becoming the highest-grossing foreign film in the US in 2008. Past releases include the film adaptations of Stieg Larsson’s trilogy of international mega selling novels; the first in the series, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, with over $10 million in US box office and one of the most popular international releases of the decade. Other releases include 2015 Academy Award winner for Best Foreign Language Film Ida, 2016's highest grossing foreign arthouse film and 2017 Academy Award nominee for Best Foreign Language Film A Man Called Ove, the critically acclaimed Emily Dickinson biopic A Quiet Passion starring Cynthia Nixon, and Christian Petzold’s highly regarded film Transit. Recent releases include the seven-time César Award-winning Lost Illusions, Directors’ Fortnight Brazilian film Medusa, and Mark Cousins’s epic documentary The Story of Film: A New Generation. Upcoming releases include Amanda Kramer’s Outfest award-winning, hyper-stylish feature Please Baby Please, and Sundance and TIFF genre-bender Leonor Will Never Die. Music Box Films also operates Doppelgänger Releasing, distributing cutting-edge films that push the boundaries of genre filmmaking. Launched in 2013, highlights include the Slamdance award-winner 100 Bloody Acres, Fabrice Du Welz's psychosexual thriller Alleluia, the Blu-ray debut of Wes Craven’s 1978 cult classic Summer of Fear, SXSW and Fantasia Festival favorite Heavy Trip, and the German arthouse horror film Hagazussa: A Heathen's Curse.
