- Clarence Lucas (Smithville, 19 d'octubre de 1866 - Sèvres, 1 de juliol de 1947) va ser un compositor, lletrista, director d'orquestra i professor de música canadenc. Lucas va néixer en sis nacions de la Reserva, (Ontàrio) on era un estudiant de Romain-Octave Pelletier I. Va ser professor al "Toronto College of Music", i a l'Utica, (Nova York), i va ser director musical al "Wesleyan Ladies College" de Hamilton, (Ontàrio). A Londres, va ensenyar alumnes en composició, va fer correcció de proves per a l'edició Chappel, i va ser corresponsal i redactor després de la revista "Musical Courier" que després va continuar des de Nova York i París. A Sèvres, als afores de París, Lucas es va independitzar com a transcriptor, arreglador, lletrista i traductor de música. També va col·laborar a "Etude", un periòdic musical. Lucas va dirigir obres de George Frideric Handel, Michael Costa, Edvard Grieg, i altres. Va recórrer les illes britàniques com a director de direcció per al musical irlandès Peggy Machree, i als Estats Units per al "Grieg's Peer Gynt". - Clarence Lucas (October 19, 1866 – July 2, 1947), was a Canadian composer, lyricist, conductor, and music professor. Lucas was born at Six Nations Reserve, Ontario and was a student of Romain-Octave Pelletier I. He taught at the Toronto College of Music, taught in Utica, New York, and was the musical director at Wesleyan Ladies College in Hamilton, Ontario. In London, he tutored pupils in composition, proofread music for Chappel publishing, and was a correspondent and then editor for the magazine Musical Courier which he later held in New York and Paris. In Sèvres, just outside Paris, Lucas freelanced as a music transcriber, arranger, lyricist, and translator. He also contributed to Etude, a musical periodical. Lucas conducted works by George Frideric Handel, Michael Costa, Edvard Grieg, George M. Cohan, and others. He toured the British Isles as a conductor for the Irish musical Peggy Machree, and the United States for Grieg's Peer Gynt. Lucas' first wife was the English pianist Clara Asher (who had studied with Clara Schumann) and their son was the British composer and conductor Leighton Lucas (1903 - 1982). She died in 1942. His second wife was Gertrude Pidd, a musician. In the early 1900s, Lucas composed Overture Macbeth, a piece inspired by the Shakespeare play. The work had not been performed for nearly 100 years, until July 2018, where the music was orchestrated and recorded by the Orchestra, to mark the Canadian sesquicentennial. Overture Macbeth can be found on the collection La Patrie - Our Canada, distributed by the Canadian Music Centre. He authored The Story of Musical Form (1908, London). Lucas composed music for voice, choir, organ, piano and orchestra. He wrote overtures, cantatas, symphonies, operas, chamber music, songs for musicals, lyrics for popular songs and art songs. Der Sohn eines methodistischen Pfarrers lebte in verschiedenen Kleinstädten Ontarios, bis er 1878 nach Montreal kam, wo er Klavier, Orgel und Violine studierte und ein Schulorchester leitete. Er arbeitete dann als Dirigent eines Amateurorchesters, Organist und Violinist bei der . Von 1885 bis 1888 studierte er in Paris privat bei und am Conservatoire de Paris bei Théodore Dubois Klavier. Nach seiner Rückkehr unterrichtete er am Toronto College of Music Harmonielehre und Kontrapunkt. 1889 wurde er musikalischer Direktor des Wesleyan Ladies College in Hamilton. Mit der Hamilton Philharmonic Society führte er 1889 Georg Friedrich Händels Messias und 1890 Sir Michael Costas Oratorium Eli auf. Von 1890 bis 1892 unterrichtete er in Utica (New York). Im Folgejahr ging er nach London, wo er privat Musiktheorie und Komposition unterrichtete und von 1902 bis 1904 die dirigierte. Seine Schüler hier waren Mark und sowie . Ab 1903 war er außerdem London-Korrespondent des New Yorker Musical Courier. Richard Mansfield engagierte ihn, um Griegs Schauspielmusik zu Ibsens Peer Gynt für die USA-Uraufführung 1906 zu arrangieren und zu dirigieren. Bis zu Mansfields Tof 1907 tourte er mit der Produktion durch die USA, danach ließ er sich als Mitarbeiter des Musical Courier in New York nieder. 1919 ging er erneut nach London und übersiedelte 1921 nach Sèvres, wo er als Arrangeur, Lyriker und Übersetzer sowie bis 1933 als Paris-Korrespondent des Musical Courier wirkte. Ab diesem Jahr lebte er erneut in London. Lucas war in erster Ehe mit der englischen Pianistin und Schülerin von Clara Schumann, , verheiratet.
