- Přetržení Achillovy šlachy (latinsky ruptura tendinis Achillis) je závažné zranění, vyžadující dlouhodobou léčbu a rehabilitaci většinou v délce 3 až 12 měsíců. Ve většině případů dochází k přetržení Achillovy šlachy cca 2–6 cm nad patou v místě nejmenšího zásobení šlachy krevními vlásečnicemi. Méně časté je přetržení v lýtkovém svalu nebo utržení úponu šlachy od patní kosti, popřípadě i s částí patní kosti. Vzhledem k tomu, že šlachy nejsou protkány nervovými zakončeními, dochází k přetržení Achillovy šlachy náhle bez předchozích obtíží a není zpravidla doprovázeno větší bolestí. Nejčastěji se toto zranění přihodí u sportů s rychlými změnami směru, zejména u badmintonu, squashe či fotbalu. Nejohroženější skupinou jsou rekreačně sportující lidé mezi 30 a 50 lety. (cs)
- Achilles tendon rupture is when the Achilles tendon, at the back of the ankle, breaks. Symptoms include the sudden onset of sharp pain in the heel. A snapping sound may be heard as the tendon breaks and walking becomes difficult. Rupture typically occurs as a result of a sudden bending up of the foot when the calf muscle is engaged, direct trauma, or long-standing tendonitis. Other risk factors include the use of fluoroquinolones, a significant change in exercise, rheumatoid arthritis, gout, or corticosteroid use. Diagnosis is typically based on symptoms and examination and supported by medical imaging. Prevention may include stretching before activity and gradual progression of exercise intensity. Treatment may be by surgery repair or by conservative management. Quick return to weight bearing (within 4 weeks) appears okay and is often recommended. While surgery traditionally results in a small decrease in the risk of re-rupture, the risk of other complications is greater. Non surgical treatment is an alternative as there are supporting evidences that rerupture rates and satisfactory outcomes are comparable to surgery. If appropriate treatment does not occur within 4 weeks of the injury outcomes are not as good. Achilles tendon rupture occurs in about 1 per 10,000 people per year. Males are more commonly affected than females. People in their 30s to 50s are most commonly affected. (en)

- Een gescheurde achillespees, achillespeesscheur of achillespeesruptuur is een geheel of gedeeltelijke scheuring van de achillespees. Meestal voelt het moment van een dergelijke scheuring als een schop of klap tegen de kuit. De scheuring kan gebeuren tijdens belasting van de pees, maar kan ook bij relatief zeer kleine bewegingen (zoals rustig fietsen) plotseling ontstaan. Bij volledige doorscheuring is de kuitspier niet meer verbonden met de voet. Dit kan getest worden door te knielen op een bank of stoel; de voet moet vrij in de ruimte hangen. Wanneer de achillespees intact is, zal de voet bewegen bij knijpen in de kuitspier. Bij een gescheurde achillespees blijft de voet stil hangen, wanneer er in de kuitspier geknepen wordt. Deze blessure komt relatief veel voor bij mannen tussen de 30 en 50 jaar. Het kan ontstaan als bijwerking van medicijnen, vooral van het antibioticum ciprofloxacine en andere middelen uit dezelfde groep. Het treedt eerder op bij een verminderde algemene gezondheid, bijvoorbeeld als gevolg van diabetes mellitus en ernstig nierfalen Behandeling is operatief door hechting van de gescheurde peesdelen of conservatief door fixatie in strekstand met een verband, waarbij de peesvezels vanzelf aan elkaar moeten groeien.
