The first boxer to beat Sugar Ray Robinson, Jake LaMotta was World Middleweight Champion from 1949 to 1951. Last July, he starred in a biographical off-Broadway show, Lady and the Champ.

LaMotta, the middleweight champion whose story inspired Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro, was famous for his fury both in and out of the ring. Later in life, he became a stand-up comedian.

LaMotta was awarded the win, becoming the first person to beat Robinson, but the champion’s revenge came in the first rematch just three weeks later.
