Brockenhurst to Lymington Pier upgrades

We’re making improvements to the railway between Brockenhurst and Lymington so that passengers can enjoy a more reliable service into the future.

What work is taking place?

During the first line closure at the end of October, we will be re-railing three quarters of a mile’s worth of track between Brockenhurst and Lymington Pier. We will also be using a Sand Rover to apply a sticky material to the tracks which helps the wheels of the trains grip the tracks.

During this blockade, we will examine the viaduct over Lymington River in preparation for the second phase of our work over the Christmas holidays. Over Christmas, we will be strengthening the iron columns that support it, as well as the bearers that hold the track over the river. Then we will renew the track over the viaduct to improve the reliability for passengers.

When is the work taking place?

Our engineers will be working between Saturday 26 October and Sunday 3 November 2024 during the first phase of our works, and will be returning over Christmas to complete them.

Our teams will be working around the clock to get this work done.

How will this work affect me?

During this closure, buses will replace some South Western Railway services between Brockenhurst and Lymington Pier. Buses will operate as per the below:

Saturday 26 October to Sunday 3 November

Two buses per hour Brockenhurst to Lymington Pier calling at Lymington Town

Why is the work needed?

We need to renew the track in the area to reduce the chance of faults causing delays to passengers.
