A format like vertical videos just defines the constraints for the creatives. Don’t limit your ideas to what you see being done. Make it your own. #contentmarketing #digital #musicbusiness
Several artists have issues with posting on TikTok, but not all TikTok videos need to be a “viral dance.” Many artists have found great success on this platform by being creative with the vertical video format. This clip is from an interview I did on The Logan Bartlett Show earlier this year. We discussed the current state of the music industry, the impact of streaming, lessons entrepreneurs can take from hip-hop artists, and more.

Beyonce's Texas Hold 'em has officially gone number one, and it's always interesting how songs reach number one status. So, I want to look at the song from a marketing perspective and go over how it actually hit number one. Now, despite being in the age of streaming, radio is still very important and heavily weighted regarding how songs rank on the chart. And this past week, it gained 16.1 million radio air plays, over a 200% increase. It also drew 29 million streams, up 50%, and is number one on the streaming songs chart. It also went up about ten spots on the radio air plays chart due to the numbers I just mentioned. In addition, it sold 29,000 downloads. So, as you can see, that huge increase in radio airplay propelled the song to number one past Jack Harlow's Lovin' On Me, which was leading the radio race last week. So there you go, radio hit singles still paved the way even in the streaming air. Pretty interesting. #music #musicmarketing #billboard #hot100 #beyonce #musicartists #musicindustry #musicnews #marketinginsights #radio #streaming #radioadvertising #spotify #musicbusiness

“Who’s paying for music in 2024?” When potential new label or distributor partners ask this, I share my screen and show them a dashboard like this one from a release that went live yesterday, July 2nd, 2024. Yes, a fan paid $1,000. Yes, numerous fans paid $100. No, this artist doesn’t have millions of followers or monthly listeners. Yet, this artist will likely recoup before the release hits streaming platforms. Why? Because they used EVEN. What’s the alternative? Not doing a campaign on EVEN and leaving money on the table? Simply relying on the broken models we know don’t work? Consumer behavior is rapidly changing, and fans are more than ever willing to pay for access. Artists, managers, and executives are getting EVEN. You should too. #musicindustry #musicnews #dtc #streaming #superfans

Streaming Farms - the music streaming equivalent of Click Farms for ad fraud. An interesting classroom example, especially for faculty who cover fraud concepts mentioned in my IS Textbook. This is an Instagram video link. You should be able to click browser to open the app then see the full video. The images of the racks of phones are wild. https://lnkd.in/eN7FYR8q

THE RADIO STAR: NOT DEAD YET Gen Z still listens to the radio. Even though 13-22-year-olds’ listening habits definitely lean toward streaming, with Spotify and YouTube leading the way, radio still has a notable place in their life: 20% of their listening time comes from AM/FM. In fact, Edison Research found 53% of 13-34-year-olds (so, Millennials, too) listen to radio daily—naturally, more than half of that being during car rides. And while radio isn’t the younger gen’s number one source for listening to music, it’s notable that radio reaches 81% of 18-49-year-olds weekly, which is +20 pts more than what cable TV now reaches. (Radio Ink) 📊 YPulse data: 36% of 13-39-year-olds use AM/FM radio to listen to music -- For more expert-curated Gen Z news: https://hubs.ly/Q02K3MpY0

We’re well past the point where just putting your music out there is enough. It’s all too easy for original music to be lost on streaming platforms. Add to this the fact that exposure is defined by algorithms that operate on unknown factors and variables, and you can see how much trust these platforms demand of artists. Streams are an artist’s livelihood. And they’ve no control over them. Artists can’t control what an algorithm is going to push but they can control their brand and the community they build around it. Listeners won’t just come passively, it’s on labels and artists to pursue their people. Release music all you want, but unless you’re engaging with potential listeners and building relationships, it’s unlikely to go very far. You can’t wait for streams, you have to go get them. #musicindustry #streaming #tech
