On November 14th, I had the privilege of visiting the South African CAA offices in Johannesburg. In my capacity as the lead of the "connectors" sub-group within the EUROCAE working group on NGAP and as an EASA - European Union Aviation Safety Agency external expert supporting the Safety Promotion Task focused on promoting diverse careers and opportunities in the European aviation industry (task SPT.0107 in the European Plan for Aviation Safety), I was warmly received by Thobile Masooa, Phindiwe Gwebu and Sosiwakhe Mohudi.   Our discussions revolved around the various initiatives and plans that both organisations, SACAA and EASA are implementing to attract, train, retain, and, in the case of the SACAA, even financially support young boys and girls at the beginning of their careers in the aviation industry.   It is interesting to note that the challenges we collectively face are remarkably similar across hemispheres, both within the industry and among regulatory authorities concerned with addressing the pressing issue of replenishing the aviation workforce. While there are subtle differences, such as the focus on providing opportunities in marginalised areas for enthusiastic young talents, the overarching goals remains the same. There is a shared belief in the significant value of collaboration, exchanging best ideas and practices selflessly, and mutually supporting each other to ensure that aviation becomes a sustainable sector taking into account the 3 pillars: people-, financial-, and environmental-sustainability. We are primarily investing in the people-sustainability aspect with the skilled individuals needed to drive our industry forward in the years to come…for the benefit of all.

Flying on Delta Air Lines today on my way to Maine to visit my daughters, and I just overheard a young woman say, “Yeah, this is so much better than Spirit Airlines.” It made me reflect on how normal the Delta experience is for me because I’ve been flying Delta for years. ✈️ Her comment brought a few things to mind, primarily around the idea of standards. Being an Atlanta resident, I’ve been loyal to Delta for years and consider it THE standard for flying. Perhaps it’s because Delta maintains a high level of service, or maybe it’s just familiarity, but generally, I’ve found my experiences on Delta to be superior to other airlines. For this young woman, Spirit was her standard until today, which likely marks a new standard for her. 🌟 This got me thinking about how our standards evolve as we grow and gain new experiences. Recently, I flew with Qatar Airways and Singapore Airlines for a trip to Indonesia and Singapore, and those experiences set another new standard for me. The personalized service and attention to detail, like rose-scented syrup over fresh berries and an electric candle for a candlelight dinner in the air, were remarkable. 🕯️🍓 It’s important to set high standards for ourselves, but we should never be so arrogant that we can’t comfortably adjust. I’ve heard some people insist that they can only fly first class, as if anything else is beneath them. That’s not what I’m getting at. That’s arrogance. 🚫 True growth comes from experiencing different levels and remaining humble enough to appreciate each one. It’s a reminder that our expectations and standards are constantly being shaped by our experiences. What experiences have reshaped your standards? RBI courses delivered simultaneously in 3 continents! Airlines are fully engaged in training their staff on the risk-based methodology in preparation for their upcoming audits. This week, we provided the Risk-Based IOSA Airline Training courses in Europe (Rome, Italy), North Asia (Tianjin, People’s Republic of China) and North America (Montreal, Canada). It is impressive to see this training being conducted simultaneously across three continents, emphasizing the global significance and importance of this program. The Montreal course had participating staff from Vueling Airlines, Philippine Airlines, and Air Transat which reflects the diverse representation and industry interest in adopting risk-based methodologies. I greatly enjoy personally meeting the participants who attended from these organizations. On a separate note, big kudos to JASON VANHEEMST who guided participants through the curriculum over the last five days with multiple opportunities for role play, group exercises and practical case studies. Many thanks to Serkan Simitcioglu, Head of IOSA who dedicated time to meet with the class and offer support, underscoring International Air Transport Association (IATA)'s commitment to fostering a collaborative transition for the participating airlines.
