I need to contact 15 people, the legal department, PR, someone named 'Clyde' in marketing, the engineering team, and Pope Francis to get buy-in for this change". 6 weeks later the feature is live and being tested. Don't let people tell you the problem with innovation at large companies is remote work.

Leading remote engineering teams - some takeaways from the roundtable discussion last night. (You can view the recording here: https://lnkd.in/exsuuZGh.) Last night for me, that is. The panel of Ben Parisot, Daniel Lizik, Lee Johnson and myself were spread over Oregon, Tokyo, Mississippi and Frankfurt and are working with people globally, so it's not a surprise that the discussion of #culture came up and their importance in dictating how people best relate to each other. I mentioned that my former employer, GFT Technologies, gave me cultural training based on insights from the book "The Culture Map" by Erin Meyer. The tool Tuple was recommended as the go-to tool for remote #PairProgramming - I'd never heard of it and I'm keen to look into it. We talked about the increased danger of getting stuck in an "implementation tunnel" when you are working remotely, when what you need is to stop and re-check with someone whether you are on the right path. Finding low-barrier ways to interact remotely (like always-open "virtual team rooms") can help with this. The book "Leadership is Language" by L.
