Together, they delved into insightful discussions on the pivotal role of material sustainability in a world navigating through a period of significant transition. Groundbreaking potential of spintronics (PEPR SPIN) and the actors working on this topic in France (SPINTEC, Laboratoire Albert Fert, Institut Jean Lamour (IJL) ...) and Japan (Tohoku University, The University of Tokyo ..) were discussed Professor Tomonaga Okabe from the Graduate School of Engineering, a leading light in engineering innovation, discussed the impact and future of plastics Professor Daisuke Sano, also from the Graduate School of Engineering, shared is vision on Water Vice President Professor Masahiro Yamaguchi played a pivotal role as a facilitator The visit also included tours of cutting-edge facilities, showcasing the university's leadership in technological innovation: The Center for Innovative Integrated Electronic Systems (CIES), guided by Tetsuo Endoh, offering a glimpse into the future of electronics. The Synchrotron Facility Nano Terasu, presented by Masaki Takata, President of the Photon Science Innovation Center (PhoSIC), highlighting advancements in photon science. ON THE HISTORY OF ATOMIC LAYER ETCHING The recent post on July 29, 2024 by prof. Kessels & team on the AtomicLimits blog https://lnkd.in/erk98szN contains a typo on 1974 being the year of the "First patent on ALE". 1974 was the year ALD was patented, exactly 50 years ago, and we will celebrate this at the plenary opening of ALD-ALE2024 https://ald2024.avs.org/ in Helsinki today (Monday Aug. 5, ’24), together with the Finnish inventor Tuomo Suntola. In that same plenary session Dmitry Suyatin (AlixLabs, Sweden) and I will reveal when ALE was first patented. For long the first patent on ALE was thought to be by Max Yoder in 1987 (US4756794A) on diamond etching with intermittent pulsing of nitrogen dioxide and noble gas ions), but actually it was Seiichi IWAMATSU of SEIKO, Japan who published in 1981 an application (JPS5898929A; priority Dec. 9, 1981; assignee Seiko Epson Corp.) on Si-etching by repeated exposure to iodine (I2) chemistry at room temperature followed by a light or heat pulse up to ~ 300 °C. ► Time to re-write history: please join us tomorrow in Hall 5A at 08:45 am ◄

In this week’s MSc lectures, I covered the topic of coupling optical fibres with silicon waveguides. A fascinating subject with lot of clever solutions and yet still room for improvement.
