Create a new design - Canva Tutorial

- [Instructor] There are a few ways to create a new blank design in Canva. One option is to click the button near the top right that says Create a Design. Now, there are many different types of design projects you can make. You might be using Canva to design logos or make graphics for a social media post, but it can also be used for video projects, for print publications, and more. Of course, there's nothing wrong with using Canva for one specific type of design, but you should be careful to choose the right design type when you start your project. As you point at each of these presets, you'll see the dimensions. For example, if I point at the preset for video, it has dimensions of 1920 pixels wide by 1080 pixels tall. This is a standard resolution for video, but when I point at a preset for the poster, this has dimensions that are measured in inches, because posters are generally designed to be printed and some presets, like for a whiteboard, do not have set dimensions because they can scale infinitely. Now, in most cases you don't have to think too much about the dimensions, but later in this course we'll see some options for changing the size of a project if you need to. So of course, you could choose one of these presets from the list, or you can use the search field up at the top. For example, if I search for Instagram, it shows the different types of designs I could make that are formatted for an Instagram post. So I'm just going to start by choosing a standard Instagram post, and at this point, I recommend you at least rename each new design as you make them, so you can identify them when managing your projects later. So you can click on the name field up at the top, type in the name that you want to use, then hit the return key. So I have this design project open and I want you to see that it opens in a separate tab. I can see the tab for it up here at the top. Now I'm working in the desktop application. If you're working with Canva on the web, each design project will open in a separate web browser tab, but it will functionally work the same. If you want to close the tab, you can click the X and that will close the design. Or if you click on this home icon to the left, that takes us back to the main page, but if you did not close that design, it's still open in another tab and you can switch over to it. But for now, I do want to go back to the main page. Now a different way to start a new project is using this banner. You could choose one of these popular design categories, and then you can browse through the more specific design types within that category. Now, if you choose the category labeled For You, you can browse through several of the most common design types, or you can quickly open one of your recent projects. But still, if you open one of these presets, like if I choose the whiteboard preset here, once again, you get that new design in a new blank workspace. And naturally, I want to go to the title field and give this a name. Now, you should notice that this design is formatted for this specific type, this time a whiteboard. The background looks different compared to that Instagram design, and some of the controls look different. Different types of designs will have different options and controls, but there are some tools that work the same in almost all types of designs. On the left side, you'll always see this panel with the buttons on the far left and you can close this panel by clicking this arrow, but you can open it again by clicking on any of these tabs, and you'll find that the tabs for adding graphical elements, uploading your own photos, adding text, or drawing elements will be here and will work the same in almost all of your projects. Now finally, it's important to see that your designs can have multiple pages. At the bottom of this design, I can see that there's this page button. It has the number one on it, because I only have one page so far, but I can click on that to see the grid view. I can click the plus button here to create additional pages and then I can double click on the page that I want to work with. Those are the controls in a whiteboard design, But if I go over to the Instagram design that I still have open, you'll see it works the same. I can click the button down at the bottom. I can add more pages. I can double click to switch to the page that I want, but you'll find that most projects also have this option directly in the interface to add additional pages. So I can click that, and then you can also scroll up and down through those pages. So now I've made a few designs. Now you don't have to worry about saving changes to your designs. All of your changes will save automatically. These projects will be there later when we learn about managing existing projects.
