EU-funded project to promote responsible aquafood production and consumption by a sustainability indicators framework.

About us

Verifish is a Horizon EU-funded project, that aims to empower consumers to make informed and sustainable choices regarding seafood. By delivering comprehensive information on sustainability, nutritional content, origin, and potential health implications, Verifish aims to facilitate healthier consumption habits. Through the development of a verifiable indicator framework, Verifish will cover a range of indicators of environmental and social sustainability, origin, production processes, health, and nutrition. Verifish will not introduce new indicators; instead, it will integrate existing ones into a cohesive framework, fostering innovation in communication about sustainable seafood production and consumption. This dynamic framework will be freely accessible, ensuring transparency and accountability throughout the seafood value chain.

🌊 𝗔𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲: 𝗣𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗪𝗮𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗦𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗦𝗲𝗮𝗳𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 🐟🌍 As global demand for #seafood continues to grow, #aquaculture—fish farming—is stepping up as a key player in providing #sustainable seafood solutions. Managed responsibly, aquaculture offers a promising path to meet the needs of our planet without depleting wild #fish stocks. 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗔𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 Aquaculture is not just about producing seafood; it’s about creating a sustainable future for our #oceans. Here’s why it’s essential: 🌿 𝘙𝘦𝘭𝘪𝘦𝘷𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘗𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘴𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘰𝘯 𝘞𝘪𝘭𝘥 𝘚𝘵𝘰𝘤𝘬𝘴:  By farming seafood, aquaculture helps reduce the strain on wild fisheries, allowing natural populations to recover and thrive. 🏞️ 𝘌𝘯𝘷𝘪𝘳𝘰𝘯𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘢𝘭 𝘚𝘵𝘦𝘸𝘢𝘳𝘥𝘴𝘩𝘪𝘱:  Sustainable aquaculture minimizes habitat degradation, uses resources efficiently, and implements innovative solutions to reduce pollution and maintain ecosystem balance. 🏘️ 𝘌𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘰𝘮𝘪𝘤 𝘉𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘧𝘪𝘵𝘴:  Aquaculture supports local economies, creating jobs and opportunities in coastal communities, from farm operations to processing and distribution. 🛡️ 𝘊𝘰𝘯𝘴𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘚𝘶𝘱𝘱𝘭𝘺 𝘰𝘧 𝘕𝘶𝘵𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘵-𝘙𝘪𝘤𝘩 𝘍𝘰𝘰𝘥:  Aquaculture provides a reliable and controlled source of high-quality seafood rich in essential nutrients, omega-3 fatty acids, and vitamins—key components of a healthy diet. 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗦𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀:  While aquaculture offers significant benefits, it also faces challenges such as habitat impact, water pollution, and disease management. Sustainable aquaculture practices focus on: 📉 𝘙𝘦𝘥𝘶𝘤𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘌𝘯𝘷𝘪𝘳𝘰𝘯𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘢𝘭 𝘐𝘮𝘱𝘢𝘤𝘵:  Adopting technologies that improve water quality, optimize feed efficiency, and reduce waste. 🧪 𝘐𝘯𝘯𝘰𝘷𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘪𝘯 𝘋𝘪𝘴𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘦 𝘊𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘳𝘰𝘭:  Utilizing eco-friendly treatments and breeding practices to minimize disease outbreaks without harming the environment. 🌍 𝘌𝘯𝘴𝘶𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘛𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘴𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘺:  Providing consumers with clear, verifiable information about the sustainability of farmed seafood products. 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗩𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗙𝗶𝘀𝗵 𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘀 𝗦𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗔𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲:  VeriFish helps bridge the knowledge gap by offering a comprehensive framework of verifiable sustainability indicators for aquaculture. 🌊 𝗩𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗙𝗶𝘀𝗵 𝗮𝘁 #𝗔𝗤𝗨𝗔𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰: 𝗗𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗦𝗲𝗮𝗳𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗦𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 🌊 At the #AQUA2024conference in Copenhagen, we had the opportunity to engage with a diverse range of stakeholders, including aquaculture producers, developers, research institutions, universities, consumers, seafood retailers, policy stakeholders, funding agencies, and Standard Good Practices Organizations (SGPO). To introduce VeriFish, we expanded on our previous online poll and posed a critical question—one that's not easy to answer (to make things easier, or not, we just give 4 possible answers). 𝗪𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗵 𝗮𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗳𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝘀𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂? • 🌿 Environment • 🎣 Management • 👩🏭 Socio-economic • 🍽️ Nutrition and health 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗶𝗱 𝘄𝗲 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻? The results show that 𝘌𝘯𝘷𝘪𝘳𝘰𝘯𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 is viewed as the most important aspect of seafood sustainability among the interviewed stakeholders (40%), followed by 𝘕𝘶𝘵𝘳𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘏𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘵𝘩 (28.6%) and 𝘚𝘰𝘤𝘪𝘰-𝘦𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘰𝘮𝘪𝘤 𝘧𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘴 (25.7%). 𝘔𝘢𝘯𝘢𝘨𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 lags significantly behind at only 5.7%. We are aware that the sample size of 140 participants isn't representative of the entire sector, but it offers a snapshot of how the aquaculture community prioritizes sustainability. 𝗗𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗗𝗲𝗲𝗽𝗲𝗿: • Among #Aquaculture Producers (24 interviews) and Aquaculture Developers (8 interviews), #Environment ranks highest, followed by #Nutrition and #Health. • Research Institutions (14 interviews) and Consumers (32 interviews) also prioritize Environment but place #Socioeconomic aspects second. • #Policy #Stakeholders & Funding Agencies (14 interviews) and #SGPOs (12 interviews) share similar views, valuing Environment most, with Socio-economic considerations next. • Breaking the trend, University Members (18 interviews) and Seafood Retailers (18 interviews) highlight Socio-economic aspects as most important. Universities then favor Environment, while Seafood Retailers emphasize #NutritionandHealth. These insights underscore a strong #awareness and #prioritization of #environmental #sustainability within the #aquaculture sector, while also highlighting the importance of socio-economic and nutritional factors. As we continue to develop our comprehensive indicator framework, these perspectives will be integral to advancing sustainable and responsible #aquafood production and consumption. Thank you to everyone who participated in our survey at AQUA2024. Your input is invaluable in our mission to support a more sustainable future for the seafood industry. Let’s continue the conversation and drive positive change together! 🌱🐠 #VeriFish #AQUA2024 #SustainableSeafood #MarineConservation #GreenSolutions #BlueFood World Aquaculture Society, BioMar, University of Stavanger, Biorigin - Zilor, Blue Planet Academy, Stiim Aqua Cluster, Eurofish International Organisation
