Attention SCGIS Community! We are so excited to announce that we will be holding pre-conference online workshops this August! Joseph J. Kerski – How to use and analyze geospatial data for climate research and teaching. August 16, 2024, 5:00pm - 7:30pm. Intermediate Experience. What are the key ways in which GIS and geospatial workflows can be used to identify and analyze climate data for research and teaching? These workflows, data, and tools will be examined with a focus on extreme urban heat. Where does extreme heat occur, how does tree cover affect heat, and how do we determine the vulnerable populations affected? After describing the topics, workflows will be demonstrated, case studies shown, and data sources discussed. This workshop will feature hands-on components using ArcGIS Online. Woven through the course are discussions and short activities touching on scale, data quality, ethics, and greater societal implications. Miriam Schmidts - Spatial and Imagery Analysis in ArcGIS Pro. August 23, 2024, 5:00 - 7:30pm. Any Experience Level. This workshop is going to explore different raster and imagery analysis workflows, starting with cost distance analysis, building a model to connect mountain lion habitats. It will look into raster suitability analysis to prioritize conservation areas, perform change detection and finish with an image classification workflow using deep learning Aleksander Zudkin - Python Basics for Environmental Specialists. August 31, 2024, 2:00pm - 6:30pm. No Experience/Beginner Experience. This workshop will look at the basic constructions and objects - variables, functions, loops, basic data types (int, float, str, list, tuple, dict) and operations with it. There will be several practical cases for basic skills to solve and a small module in a GIS case. Some homework will be given to consolidate skills! GIS Tip: Leverage Remote Sensing for Vegetation Analysis 🌳🛰️ Remote sensing is a game-changer in conservation, allowing us to monitor vegetation changes over time with high precision. By utilizing satellite imagery in GIS programs, you can track deforestation, habitat degradation, and vegetation health. To get started: Access satellite imagery from sources like Landsat or Sentinel (freely available). Use the 'NDVI' (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) tool to analyze vegetation health. Visualize changes over time to identify areas needing conservation action. Remote sensing provides valuable insights for proactive conservation strategies, helping us protect and restore critical habitats. Stay tuned for more tips on harnessing GIS for conservation! #GIS #RemoteSensing #Conservation #VegetationAnalysis #NDVI #Sentinel #EOBrowser #sACSCGIS Figure caption: NDVI imagery from Sentinel imagery accessed from the EO Browser website

GIS Tip: Utilize Habitat Suitability Modeling in ArcGIS Pro 🦁🌿 Enhance your conservation planning by leveraging Habitat Suitability Modeling (HSM) in ArcGIS Pro. This powerful tool helps you predict the most suitable habitats for various species by analyzing environmental variables such as elevation, vegetation, and proximity to water sources. There are four main steps for creating a suitability model: a) Determine and prepare the criteria data. b) Transform the values of each criterion to a common suitability scale. c) Weight criteria relative to one another and combine them to create a suitability map. d) Locate the areas for the siting or to preserve. Visualize and interpret the results to prioritize areas for conservation actions. By identifying optimal habitats, you can focus your efforts on preserving critical areas and ensuring the survival of endangered species. Stay tuned for more tips on maximizing the impact of GIS in conservation! #GIS #HabitatModeling #Conservation #Biodiversity #ArcGISPro #sASCGIS #ESRI

Had a wonderful presentation by Prof Willem van Riet where he detailed some of the amazing conservation and GIS projects that he has worked on. He also spoke about the future of GIS where AI, machine learning, deep learning, predictive analysis can help to increase overall efficiencies. "Imagine automating all the menial geospatial tasks, and processing Big Data in near real-time? Imagine what could then be achieved by creative and innovative thinking?" #GIS #SaSCGIS #AI #GeoAI #SCGIS

Tip: Harness the Power of Spatial Analysis 🌍🔍 Buffer tool Did you know that spatial analysis in GIS can unveil hidden patterns and relationships crucial for conservation efforts? Dive into your GIS program and explore tools like 'Buffer' to assess the impact of human activities on critical habitats, species or features. The buffer tool in geographic information systems (GIS) is a tool that determines a zone around a geographic feature that contains locations within a specified distance of that feature. This zone is called the buffer zone or just buffer. Buffers can be used for both raster and vector data model problems. #GIS #SpatialAnalysis #Conservation #Biodiversity #ArcGISPro #sASCGIS
