In the wake of the FDA rejecting the use of MDMA for PTSD treatment, our co-founder & CEO Sofia Noori, MD MPH has shared important insights with The Baltimore Sun on why she thinks this is the right decision (for now) for the safety of already-vulnerable rape & sexual violence survivors. The current MDMA treatment protocol encourages physical touch for patients, a behavior that is historically prohibited between a therapist and patient, and can put sexual violence victims at serious risk of being retraumatized — while on a mind-altering substance. We are hopeful for the promise of new emerging treatments like MDMA-assisted therapy but are glad that the safety of trauma survivors is front-and-center in this decision ❤️ . https://lnkd.in/gz_Z_qtv

There's no magic pill for PTSD, but we don't need one. There are plenty of therapies, including Nema's first-line CPT treatment approach, that lead to ample healing for trauma survivors 💜 Learn more from our inspiring clinical co-founders Sofia Noori, MD MPH & Isobel Rosenthal, MD, MBA below. And stay tuned for more insights from us following the FDA's recent decision to reject MDMA for PTSD treatment in the coming days!

    Co-Founder and CEO/CMO at Nema Health - We're Hiring!

Many of you may know the #FDA rejected #MDMA for #PTSD treatment this past Friday, which I believe was the right decision for patient safety (more to come from me on this). While our field should always stay excited about new innovative treatments, the focus on a silver bullet for PTSD takes the spotlight away from the amazing therapies that do result in #trauma recovery. Because it's not that we have a dearth of effective treatment options, we simply don't do a good job of ensuring #survivors have access to them. I want survivors, their loved ones, clinicians, and health plans to know: just because we don't have a magic pill for PTSD doesn't mean that we don't have innovative therapies that lead to healing for millions of trauma survivors. Read more about why here:

"Many people still think about trauma & PTSD as a scarlet letter: once you experience it, there is no way back to a good or 'normal' life. If we bring more awareness to PTSD and its treatments, we can help fight these myths." ❤️ Thank you so much to Behavioral Health Tech and Solome Tibebu for highlighting this reality of trauma and PTSD and many more in honor of PTSD Awareness Month! https://lnkd.in/eWnT2cs3

June is PTSD Awareness Month, and headlines have been flying around about MDMA-assisted therapy for PTSD, which was recently voted down by the FDA Advisory Panel. While we are always excited by new breakthroughs in clinical innovations for PTSD and trauma, we wanted to take this opportunity to level-set on a few key points: 🤝🏼 The biggest issue in PTSD, in our eyes, is one of access: 10% of people in the US will develop PTSD and 80% of them will never access treatment. Our work is in helping these survivors know effective treatment and healing are possible now. ❤️🩹The clinical help that trauma survivors need exists today: there are dozens of effective treatment options for people with PTSD that can avoid re-traumatization, offer affordable alternatives, and promote equally (if not more) successful recovery. ♀️PTSD is largely a women’s health issue — the majority of trauma survivors are women who’ve endured domestic or sexual violence — and the MDMA research discounted the testimony and safety of women who developed suicidal ideation and suffered sexual assault during the trials. We must vet new treatments through the lens of patient safety to make sure all trauma survivors are protected & safe. 💡Although the future of MDMA-assisted therapy remains to be seen, healing is possible for trauma survivors without it. Cognitive Processing Therapy, Nema’s main treatment, leads to recovery in 90% of patients and other evidence-based approaches including Prolonged Exposure and EMDR are also highly effective. In the wake of this news, we are reminded of our mission at Nema: to help trauma survivors find lasting peace & healing from PTSD. We have confidence in the evidence-based treatment we provide and the inherent strength of survivors — our work is in finding them and instilling hope that there are brighter days ahead. ☀️
