This year, as we remember the anniversary of September 11, MVA was proud to once again sponsor and partner with the North Carolina Bar Foundation (NCBF), Bank of America, McGuireWoods, and Bradley to assist local first responders with preparing estate planning documents for the Wills for Heroes event held at the Bank of America Urban Garden on September 11. MVA Veterans John Allen and Camille Essick attended the memorial service held at Bank of America, alongside 24 MVA volunteers that participated in the full day of events. Wills for Heroes, a pro bono program of the North Carolina Bar Foundation, has been in existence in North Carolina for more than a decade. Wills for Heroes provides to eligible first responders and their families free estate planning documents: simple Wills, Health Care Powers of Attorney, Power of Attorney, and advance directives. https://lnkd.in/dC8DrGwP

Moore & Van Allen (MVA) Co-heads of DEI Advice, Audits & Assessments Valecia M. McDowell, Josh Lanning, and Associate Elena Mitchell, co-authored a Law360 article titled, “What VC Fund Settlement Means For DEI Grant Programs,” which was published on September 17, 2024. On Sept. 11, an Atlanta-based venture capital fund that ran a minority grant program, and an advocacy group founded by longtime diversity, equity and inclusion opponent Edward Blum, surprised many DEI advocates by announcing their settlement in American Alliance for Equal Rights v. Fearless Fund Management LLC . . . Notwithstanding the settlement, the law is far from settled in this area [and the] decision to resolve the matter without a final adjudication on the merits leaves other, like-minded grant programs free to craft program eligibility criteria prioritizing support for historically underfunded or under-resourced individuals without running afoul of a final ruling from the Eleventh Circuit. https://lnkd.in/eFHGuCMm

MVA Finance Associates John I. Sanders, Yiran Jiang, and Italian Counsel Francesco Ferrini co-authored article titled, “Foreign Institutional Investors Await Italian Government Action on Corporate Governance Reforms.” The article On March 27, 2024, the Italian legislature enacted reforms to attract new investors to the Italian capital markets and improve corporate governance following guidelines issued by former Prime Minister Mario Draghi’s government in 2022. The Draghi guidelines were focused on resolving long-term issues that made the Italian capital markets uncompetitive relative to their European peers and had a material effect on the ability of Italian companies to raise capital in their domestic markets. https://lnkd.in/eMhmcZ59
