Powering entrepreneurs to end poverty.
About us
iDE is a global development organization that co-creates with foundations, governments, individuals, for-profits, and nonprofits to develop lasting solutions to poverty. We design and deliver market-based solutions in Agriculture and WASH in 11 countries across Asia, Africa, and Central America. Much more than a collection of technologies and field offices, we are a globally integrated ecosystem of nearly 1,000 staff, passionate about innovation and entrepreneurism. The bottom line is improving the lives of our clients: the rural farmers and small businesses that are among the world’s poorest. The impact we report is rooted in reality and the data is readily available to anyone. This is our method of ensuring that the investments—in money and in time—made by our donors, the rural entrepreneurs we are working with, the customers they are serving, and our staff are having real impact.

We are thrilled we got to attend SIWI - Stockholm International Water Institute World Water Week 2024! Here are some reflections from the week: While iDE is known for our work in sanitation, our insights into water governance are just as impactful. Our key takeaway is that governance is a means, not the end goal. To sustain these gains, it’s crucial to: 💧 Strengthen governance mechanisms at all levels 💧 Expand access to WASH 💧 Ensure inclusivity in future evaluations Through collaboration, trust, and participation we can drive lasting impact in communities. Another highlight from this week was our role in the Tools for Trust session, where Elise Mann, Director of WASH, guided participants through our Period Pathways tool to create meaningful conversations around menstruation. #WorldWaterWeek #WASH #MHH #Collaboration #Trust #iDE #WaterGovernance

Women entrepreneurs like Flora Mostiço are key drivers of change in their communities. Despite facing significant challenges—from limited access to credit and land ownership to the impacts of climate change—Flora has transformed her market store into a hub of resilience and prosperity. Through training, Flora has become a farm business advisor (FBA), providing high-quality agricultural supplies, offering business advice, and sharing climate-resilient farming techniques with others in her community. The evidence is clear: empowering women results in higher household incomes, better food security, and increased resilience to climate shocks. Flora’s story is just one example of how investing in women can transform communities and drive sustainable progress. Read more about how women are leading the way to equity and prosperity in this piece in Business Fights Poverty by our Vice President of Programs, John Choptiany, PhD: https://lnkd.in/gRJd2RmR #iDE #ChangeNotCharity #WomenInBusiness #EmpowerHer #ClimateResilience

Last week, iDE Zambia Country Director, Sylvester Kalonge, and iDE Director of Women’s Entrepreneurship and Global Business Development, Alexandra Spieldoch had the opportunity to represent iDE at the “Accelerating Gender Transformative Agri-Food Systems” panel during the AFS Forum in Kigali, Rwanda. This dynamic discussion included a fireside chat with youth entrepreneurs from Kenya, Tanzania, and the DRC and a panel of experts discussing #gender dynamics in African food systems, including the need to integrate and stabilize food supply in the face of #climate change, conflict, and volatility. Director of CGIAR GENDER Impact Platform, Nicoline de Haan, made the key point that “we spend too much time trying to change women, now we need to change our systems.” Women are not homogeneous and nor are their experiences all the same. And at the heart of that is women’s entrepreneurship as a catalyst for systems change. Thank you to our co-organizers CGIAR, CGIAR GENDER Impact Platform, USAID, African Union’s CAADP, Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT, and FAO in making this session at #AFSForum2024 a success. We look forward to continuing the dialogue on gender-transformative agricultural initiatives across the continent. #iDE #AfricaFoodSystems #GenderEquity #GESI #ClimateResilience
