At COP28, the Frontiers Research Foundation launched the Open Science Charter, urging support for open access to scientific knowledge. Our goal is for governments worldwide to commit to mandating open access to knowledge by 2030 so policymakers, governments, researchers, and the public have access to the essential knowledge to solve the pressing problems society is currently facing. This year at COP29 in Baku, we’ll present the voices of thousands of researchers who have signed the Open Science Charter to the COP Presidency. Among the good practices, publishers can implement robust policies, foster a culture of integrity, enforce ethical guidelines in line with industry standards, and ensure transparency throughout the publication process. A new synthesis of the latest climate science, led by Mat Collins of University of Exeter, presents expected changes this century to precipitation, storms, heatwaves, and extreme events from the equator to the poles—and the impact on infrastructure, public health, and food security. The authors call for deeper assessments of regional climate risks and vulnerability, to better inform climate policy and adaptation measures by governments, citizens, and businesses. The National Science and Technology Library and Frontiers signed an agreement that aims to enhance the accessibility and dissemination of high-quality research from China to the global scientific community. This partnership will facilitate the publication of Chinese research in open access journals, promote international collaboration, support the global movement towards open science and work together to solve global challenges through interdisciplinary research. Vertical farms could help provide nutritious food to growing urban populations. A new study shows how these farms could boost crop yield and quality while reducing operating costs. Elias Kaiser and Leo Marcelis et al. describe the many benefits of dynamic environmental control—where light, temperature, and other growing factors are adjusted according to energy prices and plant needs. The researchers also outline crucial developments for widespread adoption of dynamic environmental control in vertical farming systems.
