Moderated by rebecca mcinroy, the panelists took a big picture look at the modern safety net — how did we get here, what’s broken, and what are the biggest challenges standing in the way of Americans who need help? Episode 2, “What Happens Now?”, will be recorded on Nov. 13 after the upcoming presidential election. Here's a sneak peak of episode 1 of "American Compassion: The Safety Net Podcast LIVE" 🌟 rebecca mcinroy, the host of "American Compassion", moderated an invigorating, passionate, and optimistic discussion about the broken social safety net in the U.S. A big thank you to our participating panelists: Isha Desselle, Pritesh Gandhi, MD, MPH, Erine Gray, and Maninder Kahlon ("Mini"). We'll share the full podcast recording and episode tomorrow. While you wait, see what gives these panelists the energy to reimagine the safety net: 💬 Erine: "Part of the goal is to inspire people to change the system. There is nothing more rewarding than finding your calling and finding your mission... Jump all in and take that chance." 💬 Pritesh: "I do think there are enough good people out there. It’s incumbent on us to completely shift the systems that we work in." 💬 Isha: "I look forward to a system where people could find out exactly what help there is out there, what solutions there are for them." 💬 Mini: "The solution, human connection and dignity, are not easily funded, but I'm very optimistic; you have to be." A special thank you to Jim Tuttle, Alex Lancial, and our co-hosts at The LBJ School of Public Affairs. Stay tuned for the full episode tomorrow, and we'll see you on November 18 for episode 2! 🎙️ Learn more about "American Compassion" ▶️ https://lnkd.in/g3-TPevU #AmericanCompassion #podcast #LBJSchoolOfPublicAffairs #LBJ #Findhelp #SafetyNet

Join us *next week* on Wednesday, Sept. 18 on The University of Texas at Austin's campus for "American Compassion: The Safety Net Podcast LIVE"! We're teaming up with The LBJ School of Public Affairs for in-person discussions, and attendance is free and open to the public. 🗓️ Register to attend ▶️ https://hubs.li/Q02PTdGx0 Throughout this week, we're introducing our featured panelists for episode 1. Today, we're highlighting Maninder Kahlon ("Mini"), Ph.D., an associate professor at the Dell Medical School at the University of Texas at Austin's Department of Population Health and the founding vice dean of the health ecosystem. Her translational lab, Factor Health, identifies opportunities to rapidly improve health through programs embedded in people's lives, outside the clinic, testing them through community-based trials. We asked Mini for her thoughts on the current state of the social safety net: 💬 "As the American Compassion podcast series has shown us, we have history to benefit from in thinking about how we, as Americans, help those who are being left behind," she said. "But, I believe we need to redefine and revitalize our definition of a thriving American society to one where investing in the safety net is seen as essential to our growth and our ideals, not a matter of choice at the ballot box or optional charity." 📰 Learn more about season 3 ▶️ https://hubs.li/Q02PTbgq0 #AmericanCompassion #podcast #LBJSchoolOfPublicAffairs #LBJ #Findhelp #SafetyNet

We're teaming up with the The LBJ School of Public Affairs for in-person discussions of "American Compassion: The Safety Net Podcast LIVE". Attendance is free and open to the public – join us *next week* on Wednesday, Sept. 18 on The University of Texas at Austin's campus! 🗓️ Register to attend ▶️ https://hubs.ly/Q02PL5P80 Throughout this week, we're introducing our featured panelists for episode 1. Today, we're highlighting Isha Desselle, the founder of Turning Point Center in Houston. Turning Point is an independent, nonprofit organization that offers food, shelter, and other rehabilitative services for seniors. Their mission is to meet the physical and emotional needs of a neglected segment of society: underprivileged individuals aged 50 and above who are unable to provide safe and adequate living conditions for themselves. We asked Isha for her thoughts on the current state of the social safety net: 💬 "There are more people experiencing homelessness now than ever before. Many people who have never been homeless often do not know where to turn, and they may have no idea what to do," she says. "The current social safety net is not sufficiently organized; there is not enough help and direction. Nonprofits do not have an efficient system for redirecting prospective clients to the right solution. For 90% of inquiries to our shelter, we cannot provide the services they need." 📰 Learn more about season 3 ▶️ https://hubs.ly/Q02PL61X0 #AmericanCompassion #podcast #LBJSchoolOfPublicAffairs #LBJ #Findhelp #SafetyNet

It's not too late to get your free ticket for "American Compassion: The Safety Net Podcast LIVE"! We're teaming up with the The LBJ School of Public Affairs for in-person discussions about the future of the safety net. Attendance is free and open to the public – join us *next week* on Wednesday, Sept. 18 on The University of Texas at Austin's campus. 🗓️ Register to attend ▶️ https://hubs.li/Q02Pw4FM0 Throughout this week, we're introducing our featured panelists for episode 1. Today, we're highlighting Dr. Pritesh Gandhi, MD, MPH, the Chief Community Health Officer of Walmart. Pritesh leads a diverse portfolio across digital health programs, community health workers, and behavioral health to improve health outcomes for Walmart customers. Prior to that, he served as the Chief Medical Officer at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and as principal advisor to the DHS Secretary and senior leadership on medical and public health issues related to natural disasters, border health, pandemic response, acts of terrorism, and other man-made disasters. We asked Pritesh for his thoughts on season 3 of American Compassion: 💬 "The U.S. social safety net is inadequate, inaccessible, outdated, and analog - our social safety net falls short across the board, with most programs underfunded and strained by an increasingly hostile political climate," Pritesh says. "Conversations like these keep pressure on policy-makers to address the real, everyday struggles of the families and communities we serve, which often remain out of their sight and mind." 📰 Learn more about season 3 ▶️ https://hubs.li/Q02Pv_8y0 #AmericanCompassion #podcast #LBJSchoolOfPublicAffairs #LBJ #Findhelp #SafetyNet
